Octo-Masseus shenanigans

Wanted to share my knowledge on the interactions with Octo-masseus the new 4 mana 1/8 beast that does octuple damage.

Not sure if Blizz already confirmed but I was really curious if the “trample” or excess damage would flow through, so I did a handbuff esque Hunter deck with “Always a bigger jormunger”. I managed to get the beast to 4 attack and just a standard attack translates to 32 damage. After using the card that gives Octo excess damage it only translates the raw attack power and not the damage multiplier.

However, there is still a strange combo potential in wild. Is it good? Probably not. Maybe someone can make a more refined deck, but if you include ashtongue and move it to your opponents side with Zylus the damage does translate as you would expect.

I was thinking of a deck that included one copy of ashtongue, zylus, octo masseus, and absorbant parasite. If you play emperor you can easily play the whole combo the next turn, assuming you live. The only issue is the volatility of wild and how quickly decks can kill you before turn ten. So not sure how easy it would be to pull!

Just thought I share my thoughts as the card appeared to be super fun and janky.

So “Always A Bigger Jormungar” doesn’t translate in more damage to the face?
Well… that sucks

This makes sense since only the damage needed to kill the minion would apply to the minion. Then the rest of the damage is assigned to the player.

I made a paladin handbuff to get the 888 Octo achievement. On my 2nd game I raked in over 500 damage dealt by a 10-attack Octo that my DK opponent kept slamming 1/1s into to kill

Yeah I wonder why they didn’t allow a 4 cards combo with no setup to deal 47 burst damage. Shocking isn’t it ?

I was sarcastic obviously… nowadays everything is meant to OTK

Technically it’s just a simple 2 card combo. The Octo masseus itself and Its Always A Bigger Jormunger. It makes sense that it doesn’t deal excess, because as someone had mentioned earlier:

I can’t imagine the card being particularly non-toxic to deal with if it had that kind of interaction of dealing huge excess damage to face.

However, my 4 card combo with Ashtongue and Zylus does translate due to how Ashtongue interacts with damage. I did a practice run against the innkeeper and was able to do 122 damage in one swing which is crazy.

Nah, in current HS it’s common. There is of course Linecracker Druid. Dane got so much armor in Wild he crashed the game client. Chump has made a Therazen Warrior in Standard and attacked his opponent for 2096 damage.

And a personal anecdote: I had 180 hp with my Triple Blood DK and still got killed by Shaman who Shuderblocked Incidus and Shuderblocked Zola on Incidus.

Numbers are illusion in HS.

That’s neat.

But the comment was mainly highlighting a combo potential! Thanks for sharing tho!

It’s not burst if you need your opponent to have specific minions and especially let yours alive. Burst means from the hand
But you can summon a 1 health minion for your opponent for 1 mana and give the masseuse rush for 2 mana, making it a 4 cards combo that would have dealt 47 burst damage if they allowed the interaction
As for wild, it really doesn’t matter
A combo that requires a thaurissan turn and 10 mana in wild is nothing to be scared of

I don’t think you are intrepreting my original post correctly.

Excess damage from Octo does not translate the octuple damage to face. I have tested this. So techinally summoning a 1 cost minion doesn’t exactly do anything for you. You would specifically need minions that copy the damage dealt to the enemy. (I tried to include a link but it won’t let me)

Unless somehow you pray to the RNG gods to summon Ashtongue or another minion that copies damage in a similar manner (I believe there is a warlock demon that does this). You are going to have to run Ashtongue for this combo, unless there is some other way I am not familiar with.

I mean it was about combo potential. Dane was playing Odyn Warrior and you could do the thing Chump did with his Therazane Warrior in Wild and with Charge that would be 2000 damage to da face.

Sure, to an extent. But it was really targetted at my “122 damage” comment. I am not here to dive into the semantics of how damage is irrelevant here. Nor about other combo potentials, we get it. Therezane combo. Great.

This post is mainly about Octo-masseus. And theory crafting behind it. That’s it.

I know if you put threads of despair on it is fun. You could test that out if you want the damage achievement.

I understand your original post about minions transferring their damage to their hero.
But my first reply was not for you but for someone talking about Always a Bigger Jormungar specifically. Pointing out what would have been a 4 card combo for 47 burst damage

Then I replied to your “technically it’s just a simple 2 card combo”. The interaction is between 2 cards ok, but the burst combo would have required 4, with AaBJ specifically.
With either AaBJ or Ashtongue, it is only burst if you can pull the whole combo of your hand with no minion prerequisite on board.

I focused on AaBJ since this would have been the only standard combo available.
In wild you can do that combo with Asthongue, at minimum it’s a 4 cards combo that requires 14 mana for 32 damages, which makes it irrelevent to the grand scheme of wild things, even if you can still build a deck around it for your own entertainement

Again, Always a Bigger Jormunger doesn’t interact in that way. The damage multiplier doesn’t translate through excess. Ive tested this. Only raw attack power, so if you swing into a one health minion with a 3 attack Octo-masseus only two damage will bleed through not 22.

I know that it doesn’t work. I didn’t have to wait for you to test it I already knew before the card even went live thanks to the showcase event.
All I was talking about AaBJ was hypothetical. To demonstrate how ridiculous it would have been to let it work (emphasis on “would”, as I’ve always used when talking about that specific interaction).
My first reply, to the person replying “it sucks” that it doesn’t work, is sarcastic if it wasn’t clear.

In other words, with no bad feelings while writting this : I wasn’t talking to you

Sarcasm sometimes doesnt translate well. I am a person who is quite literal, would have helped if you prefaced that your comment was hypothetical but I understand now! No hard feelings man, it was just a misunderstanding. Would be pretty crazy tho I would agree.
