Okey, so let’s spill the tea. This is not a whiney post to urge blizz to do something about anything (well maybe it’ll actually be a slightly whiney post, but I swear I am not actually mad about anything).
The thing is tho, why do such a large amount of people in this game feel compelled to use emotes in such an obnoxious manner? I get that sometimes you can be a lil smug and cocky when you win against an annoying matchup or something. But I swear, some people just enjoy being toxic and annoying. I know you can just squelch these type of players (and oh boy I do squelch some people) but that doesn’t stop me from wondering why is it such a prevalent behavior in this game. I end up squelching maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the games I play.
It would make more sense if you commonly felt like a 1000 iq god when you win in this game but let’s be real; most of the games are determined mainly by luck and deck composition. I rarely feel I won because of my skill. So yeah, I wonder if it’s because the emote system just enables this kind of behavior or if it’s just that the game is generally so tilting that people became toxic while playing.
Your kind of late on that. There was a post from back then when Journey to Ungoro or Knights of the Frozen Throne. There was obnoxious emoting and been increasing over time. There was a post I have done back then was. Auto muting or Auto squelching like setting. But due to the years past. I simply gave up on it.
I believe it has to do with your interpretation of the intent of these players. It oftentimes is meant differently than it’s received. For instance, I emote “greetings” at the beginning of a match. When I lose, I say “thanks”. If my opponent makes a good play, I’ll say, “well played.”
Would you perceive this behavior as toxic? It’s absolutely not my intention to piss my opponent off.
Certainly not. I tend to greet when the game starts and do “well played” when I lose/win or when my opponent did something particularly cool. Aside from the occasional “oops” when I missplayed or my opponent did; that’s basically my usual emoting routine. I think that’s totally fine and I actually appreciate when my opponent interacts a bit. What I am talking about is the smug kind of emoting and that one is hard to misinterpret imho.
I think I know what you mean. I’ve had opponents that more or less spam emotes clearly in a way that’s to disrespect me or tilt me. But hey, that’s part of card games. Imagine if this were in person – it’d be far worse than these silly emotes. Poker players do this all the time to screw with their opponents and it works.
However, this does not happen often for me. I’m still in gold (messing around) and do not run into this virtually at all (to me memory). Is this something you experience a lot? May I ask your rank?
I usually end most months in diamond 5 or very low rank legend. I do feel this is considerably more common in diamond 5 (and, for some reason, in duels). I am not really that much affected by this kind of behavior since I tend to just mute them if they’re being annoying; but I do wonder why so many people do it. I guess it’s mostly down to people becoming really salty in certain ranks
the only thing i consider offensive and assume you’re referring to is when people spam emotes. i just mute them. some people seem to think it’s a tactic like in a poker game played for money or that it’s because people are salty. i disagree. i think it’s just the type of person. we can wonder why people are toxic but there’s really no need for that. some people are toxic.
I’ve recently played against a Druid who non-stop emoted for the entire game. Of course, when they lost, they ended up messaging me just to tell me how much I sucked lol. It definitely does feel like people who spam emote do so purely out of malice. I can’t really blame them, though. This game does bring out the worst in people, myself included, especially considering how toxic the meta is and how little the devs seem to care.
When I win against beats hunter, I will emote furiously and fervently to try and tilt them. If im lucky they will stop playing the game (joke) but I wish there was an emote that captured the idea of “You are a fool pretending to be skilled by riding the coat tails of meta analysis.” Or maybe just anything that can express the intense displeasure I have when i face yet another hunter. Several expansions in a row, hunter has been a problem and dev team doesnt care because they are smoothed brain hunter players. Not much else to do but play spooky mage, and emote at them.
Surprised they didn’t already add an auto-squelch till the next expansion toggle for 1000 runestones yet. They used BS excuses for why they didn’t yet but now they have this paywall delivery system they could used to roll out QoL improvements.
This is a lie. Emote spamming is meant to be petty. Killuminati did it to me about 6 months ago in a ladder game, he was playing a paladin deck and I was ramp druid. I saw the tag and sent a friend request to see his battletag (cancelled after) and it was the same as here. Someone else called him out about a day later on the forums and he apologized – it was intentional.
The only time I can’t stand an emoter is when it’s done using a meta superior deck against a custom built experiment. Congratulations on using google…well done…
well the point is to discuss emoting. The forums are usually filled with people screaming about nerfs, complaining about balance issues (rightly so) or just crying about a specific match they just lost; so I don’t see why it’d be out of place to just have a discussion around emoting, how people use it and how it affects user experience
I think the system lends itself to that type of behavior.
The emotes are hopelessly vague, and easily misinterpreted.
If you ask me, that is not an accident.
