New Player - am I screwed

Yes you are.

Sorry but its true.

You can also check out sites like Out Of Cards and Hearthpwn. They list budget decks you can build. Out of Cards just did an article listing 5 standard decks that can be crafted for 3900 dust or less (lowest being 1480).

Don’t waste your time, please.

This game is nothing but a slot machine with pretty pictures.

It makes you pay money to increase your odds of winning. That’s all it is.

Virtually every deck you play against you will see a million times because there is no creativity - everyone just plays the most powerful decks posted on the net.

These days games are decided by 15-20 randomly generated cards (sometimes 30+) or extreme swing turns where one player wins the game in one turn because of a handful of comically overpowered and non-interactive cards.

The game is designed to milk money from whales - nothing more.

The worst thing about it are the people on these forums who tell you there’s ‘skill’ to the game and that you just need to ‘git gud’ and watch one of the streamers who took a new account to legend rank in five days without spending money. I defy anyone to do that in the current game. Absolutely absurd.

You have been warned.

Here’s what I do in my free account - 1. The Demon hunter deck is good. 2. Choose a free deck they give to new players (they are optimised). 3. Get whizbang although he’s weaker in the wild.

To the person who posted once and warned against playing Hearthstone: please find a game you enjoy playing. We’ll all be happier if you could do that.

I have not spent money on the game, but am doing pretty good. So don’t believe these people.

It really depends on how much time you have. I like to play a little each day. I also was able to get all my heroes maxed out.

I used this new tool called google to search for low cost demon hunter. You get demon hunter for free by playing his adventure.

While I do have many wild decks, right now standard is pretty fun. I would suggest playing free stuff to get gold like area, tavern, and adventures.

To speed up the process, I would suggest spending a little money so you can have a competitive deck.

You can look for lower cost decks. Remember to use disenchant to get rid of duplicate cards and junk cards to create more dust for yourself.

On new seasons, Blizzard has also given free dust since cards you were using are moved to wild.

The whole point of standard is it does allow new players to play the game while wild lets people who have been here from the start to still use their old cards.

Thats is the best advice in the thread, though I’d say you’d shift to that in a second time after getting some base experience with cheap decks and getting comfortable with the concepts of tempo and value.

Arena is by far the most efficient way to spend your gold - as long as you get decent at it - if you’re decent you can often land 7+wins. Bonus points, it will give improve your skill and give you some solid basis.
Tip: look at some coop Arena videos from ADWCTA and Merps, it’s been a long time since I watched one, but the way they discuss every play will give you a lot of insight.

To give you some perspective, as a F2P, I now have almost all the classic cards (I miss 4 legendaries), get 50 to 60-ish packs at each expansion, buy every adventure with gold, and I can craft more or less what I want as I’m sitting on 30k dust.
So, you can get pretty far by being F2P, but that will take some time (I’ve been playing since just before Blackrock Mountain was released).

Get the free deck (choose the powerful one and not the mage one just becos of the free legendaries).

Then make a good DH deck. They are bringing the power level down, but still it is decent. Any more nerfs will make it unplayable though.

Don’t do this. As a new player, there’s no way you can win the arena veterans and experts who have spent years in arena honing their skills, and your win rate won’t be that high. You will likely end up with just two to three wins.

Don’t all new (and returning) players get offered a free high level competitive deck for a class of their choice?

Granted it won’t do someone that much good if they don’t really understand game mechanics yet, but it’s a good starting point. Also Demon hunter also gets a free competitive deck.

I don’t know what decks are being offered but they should choose the one that comes with any highlander tools

To be fair with you, you can get everything for free but your enemy here is time. And by the time you’ve caught up via gold, there will be another expansion due around the corner.

Some good news for you is that you should finish sets quicker because they recently added a dupe protection system to card packs so your collection should fill out faster.

Stay on top of the daily quest and special events that award extra. Do the weekly Tavern Brawls too (need 1 class at 10).
