Need help fighting Tortollan Pilgrim / potion of illusion mage

This deck is so upsetting to play against. I seem to run into it more than any other deck. I cant seem to even get a minion out on the board. They use the firebrand devolving missles and or kill all my minions. If they dont kill them they freeze them. I dont even have a chance to kill them before turn 8 to stop them from the combo.

My Priest Hunter rogue and palladin are struggling against this deck. I can even say my druid isnt having issues. Unless I can end the game b4 turn 8 its over. Thats hardly ever posdible.

I took a break from ranked (went to play casual) because it seemed like 14 out of 23 games it ran into it. So i went to casual and ran into it 5 times in a row again. Honestly this deck is less fun and feels more opessive to play against than pre nerf DH. At least you can play the game vs pre nerf DH. I feel with these new mage decks you basicly either just have to conceed or wait up to 8 turn’s wile they slowly kill you. I have no idea what to do once the combo starts.

I honestly feel the devs over looked Tortollan Pilgrim when potion of illusion was made.

Please dont leave a comment if you are just going to say get gud.

Im looking for advice and tips on how to beat this deck.

I’m not a good player, but 2 things :
If you don’t like fighting this deck, maybe teching against it would be a good idea ? It’ll probably feel good to win because you planned a tech card.

Saying the class you play probably isn’t enough for other to help you. You should at least write what kind of deck they are

most of my decks are meta ones or slightly different my priest decks are of my own making but all use galakrond.

Miracle secret rogue, guardian druid lib paladin. HL hunter has the best success so far against it but im still having more bad than good games against it.

Try bomb warrior…
Unless you meet a stickyfinger/wyrm purifier teching TM you’ll win.
(hint they don’t exist)

bomb warrior is actually one of the easier matchups for turtle mage unless bomb warrior draws every upgrade early and the mage draws every bomb early, as mage you can just outheal the bomb damage

They are even running weapon removal now and loathebs so you can’t even throw spells to their face or attack with weapon… I’ve just started to concede against them its pure fustration.

Thats great and all but not all of us play rogue.

Its such a dumb deck to play against, locks me out of 90% of any possible interaction.

Sucks, but hey.

Not all of us play mage.

True, some of us still have self respect.

This is all true, half my games nowadays seem to be against mages whether it be on ladder or in casual mode. Just played against yet another 2 mages in causual mode while test running a deck - first game mage discovered primus straight away first turn of the game. Second game, mage was on 0 mana yet was casting freeze spell after freeze spell after freeze spell at me. Mage is absolutely rampant in this meta and I really don’t know how blizzard have overlooked this. Something has got to be done about this.

Yeah, this deck should have never been enabled to exist.

Regardless of the limited ā€˜counterplay’ available.

It’s just not a fun deck to play against.

I imagine Blizzard will tweak it in the future (hopefully).

There’s enough variety in the meta to have to worry about teching against.

Adding in some random meme deck that is frustrating to play against is just a negative experience, and if you’re playing the wrong class…(non-rogue) you just lose a lot of the time.

That should not be happening.

Even if you win against Tortollan mage, the games feel like a one sided solitaire game.

Very little board interaction. Very unfun for the other player.

Again…
Living Dragonbreath.
You’re welcome.

There is the 3/4 your minions cant be frozen. You can keep it in hand because it will unfreeze the minions you have on the board when you play it. 3/4 for 3 is a decent card in general in current meta and i think its decent for priest as well.
Ooze is slightly annoying for mage and in current meta a strong card in general, they all run the sphere and loosing it early is a bit of a setback leaving it to rng.

Living dragonbreath is not a reliable tech because Tortollan mage is an uncommon matchup.

This is why it’s so infuriating.

Having to tech against a meme deck ruins your other matchups and even if you have living dragonbreath, there’s no gaurantee you will draw it that game.

It is not a reliable tech to run and you ruin all of your other matchups with a useless card.

Tech cards are only good if they apply to multiple matchups (i.e weapon techs).

Living dragonbreath, I have never seen anyone like ā€˜wow, I’m so glad I have living dragonbreath against Tortollan mage’

…It just doesn’t happen.

Besides, not every class has the luxury of having space for a living dragonbreath tech.

Basically only Priest which doesn’t really struggle against mage.

Ok, so there is an obvious counter that any deck can tech in, but you guys refuse to play it because you have no space in your meta netdecks.
Plus, by your own words, it is also an uncommon matchup vs a low tier, low winrate deck.
But still come on the forum to complain, because ā€œit is unfunā€.
Ok then

No. Any deck cannot tech it in without screwing their other matchups.

We already went over this.

Tortollan mage just need to be addressed.

It’s not fun for everyone to play against…even if you enjoy playing it.

It’s a 1 sided solitaire game with no board interaction.

Not fun or interactive.

This is what ccg should be made of. You know the meta, build your deck to have the best chances with any possible matchup, finding a balance. It’s so natural I shouldn’t even explain it.
But the point is that most of the people just want to copy a meta deck, play their braindead curve that requires 0 skill and 0 strategy, and any deck that disrupts this vision of dumb gameplay becomes heretic.
It was exactly the same reason everybody hated mill rogue back then.
Fun thing is that, given that this is the vast majority of the playerbase, blizzard will have to please you. That’s the reason this game will stay basically dumb.

Well, I’m not OP I can just understand the reasoning behind the original post.

It’s not fun, it goes against the point of a CCG which includes board interaction and strategy.

Tortollon mage currently bypasses a good chunk of this and many players find it unfun.

Understandably so.

I myself have had very negative experience playing against this deck.

This is exactly the opposite. Tortollan mage is a deck that forces you to use strategy, whether you are playing it or against it. And it is unfun for the exact reason that people refuses to do so. Because thinking is hard. And they just want to be able to play their dumb curve without any disruption that unpleases them.
