Mercenaries - not getting correct coins

I know mercenaries is basically dead, but I still want to complete everything. I have 3 heroes that I still need to max out. But I am not getting the correct coins.
For example Rexxar, I go to Winterspring - Snowclaw. The reward chest shows that I should get coins for Rexxar. But when I complete the bounty I get no Rexxar coins. Y’shaarj is the most frustrating. I have done the Y’shaarj bounty so many times and I don’t think I have ever received Y’shaarj coins there.
Is this intended? Does it mean you only have a chance to get the coins in the reward chest?

Not really, unless you mean PvP, perhaps.

There are old bugs, but it seems to be working well.

Not exactly.

Yes.

However, when doing a Heroic level 30 bounty, you are guaranteed to receive at least one pile of coins for a Legendary merc from the reward pool, so it is an option.

Also, one of the five ‘slots’ in a bounty reward is reserved for a merc from your party. You can increase the odds of getting the coins for the Merc you want by taking it to the bounty, even if it’s just sitting on the bench.

In fact, some people have used this fact and woud repeatedly farm the so-called ‘Heroic 1-1’ (Ferocious Quilboar) with just one merc they wanted to upgrade and getting those guaranteed coins (10 per run in that case, I think). In a way, it might be effective, but I’ve found it extremely boring.

By the way, you should also be receiving trade offers, although I don’t remember whether it’s required to upgrade something in the village for it first (mine is maxed anyway). The exchange rate is horrible, of course, however…

Does that include Mythic (which, by the way, is technically infinite, but…)?

If you’re not interested in it, you might as well blow that renown. Otherwise, to sum up, here are the options:

  • solo farm that Heroic Quilboar if that’s what you want to do,
  • take those Mercs that you want to upgrade on bounties that you do anyway,
  • farm the respective Heroic bounties for guaranteed coins, or
  • do the respective normal versions and rely on some luck (3 of 5 piles contain coins from the reward pool, one is for a random merc from the collection, I believe, and one, as said, is for a merc from your party, so you can combine some of these approaches).

Oh, one more thing (I’ll even make it a separate post for now, just in case).

I know it’s a very simple thing, but just in case: have you done all 18 tasks for all of you mercs? They are, of course, the best source of coins in the first place (there are also the story tasks, of course, which do help for some mercs, but that’s another matter, and you kinda would do it anyway) — the rest, namely the aforementioned methods, comes in once those are done.

Thanks for the reply. A lot of helpful information.
Yes the tasks are done.
The trade offers are nice, as they will only be for those that you need. But I don’t have a lot to trade at the moment.
The Heroic Quilboar does sound a bit like a grind, but I will give it a shot. But at least now I know to rather do Heroic bounties. I was doing the normal ones because they were faster and easier.
I normally fall back to mercenaries when an expansion has been out for a while and everyone starts playing the same decks and it gets a bit boring for me. I will do more Mythic once all my heroes are maxed. I know its not rational but it just bugs me that those 3 are not complete
Thanks again

No problem.

If you wanna play something more meanignful than the 1-1, I’ve built some (examples of) parties for you to farm those heroic bounties.

This one uses the (in)famous Murky - Kazakus - Y’Shaarj combo (maybe you’re familiar with it) for climbing, and it’s often quite fast. In encounters where Y’Shaarj could just die, you use Xuen instead (esp. powerful against those blues). For the boss, it’s the ‘perma-root’ combo of Elise and Khadgar, plus Kazakus for extra support. On the third turn, you should just summon the golden monkey (those golems actually synergise with it, just remember to leave a free space for it) and end it.

That’s a generic Beast party (or my take on it) featuring Rexxar, and it’s quite mighty. You could replace Blink Fox with Chi-Ji, Cookie or any merc of your choice, really. Usually you go with Mukla - Trigore - Rexxar (you could also replace someone with e.g. Blink Fox in certain situations) or Anacondra - Rexxar - Xuen, depending on opponents. For Snowclaw in particular, you also want King Krush in your party (you could replace Xuen)… Then, if memory serves, you either need some stat buffs or summon Leokk and just go at those totems with your big dino. You could also do Rotimer in Alterac, I think, with this. I thought it would be thematically fitting to play with Rexxar if you wanna upgrade him.

Alternatively, an Arcane party destroys Snowclaw.

You could add anything else you want on the bench, e.g. a ‘passenger’ (or two) for possible extra coins, Cookie (like you need it, heh), Long’xin for the treasure, Millhouse Manastorm etc.

Climbing in Winterspring, infamous for its ‘trash’ mobs, is very safe with this: Unstable Runes stop any fast attackers (frozen stag, owl), Khadgar blocks the rest with those ‘ouchy’ attacks, Medivh + Tyrande do some big damage, and on turn 2 you usually clear it (again, with Tyrande’s AoE). Alternatively, Medivh + Khadgar + Blink Fox are quite powerful. As for the boss, once again, Unstable Runes shut him down completely, on turn 1 Tyrande crits those totems, then the boss can do… nothing, as long as you use abilities at speed 5 or slower, which you wanna do anyway (e.g. shoot with Tyrande, then Rift + crits from the Fox).

Understandable.

My advice would be to just play the game, relax and enjoy it, while also progressing towards your ‘completionist’ objective.

Then you might want to hold on to that renown for now.
