Mercenaries is dead

The latest notes indicate this is the final content update for the mode.

Mercenaries Gets a Mythic Update - Hearthstone (blizzard.com)

Continued Support and New Frontiers

After these updates, we will be focusing on making the Hearthstone and Battlegrounds modes the best they can be. At the same time, Mercenaries will continue to get support for bug fixes and periodic balance changes as needed, but no further regular content updates. With the new additions in this patch, we hope that Mercenaries will be a fun, fulfilling mode for players.

To everybody who has ever chased a Bounty or gathered around the Campfire, we thank you for making this chapter in Hearthstone’s history special, and we hope you’ll enjoy everything Mercenaries has to offer in 25.4. See you in the Tavern!

Shocker. A pay-to-win mode that goes ignored by the playerbase gets axed when it doesn’t deliver on the ‘pay’ component.

They’ll probably just double down on monetizing battlegrounds now. Or exclusive paid solo content.

I was interested in the mode, but the way they went about implementing it actually made people not want to spend money because of diminishing returns.

Hot take: It shouldn’t exist in the first place, it’s taking work out of r&d for the actual main game, with hopes that the pre existing customer base will buy into it.

It’s absolutely a stupid direction to go in, bad enough we have battlegrounds.

This mode should be removed. It’s an abject failure, any money they planned on garnering from it is now lost (or at least than the amount of money needed to continue advertising it, as well as, introducing new heroes, and maintaining it),

T5 has a tendency to dig in their heels, however, and so this is unlikely, alas.

This is unnecessary; some people still enjoy this mode & are looking forward to this new content.

I never played pvp, & used it for solitaire.

My thinking is maintaining this mode may, at this point, be counterproductive to actually making money.

I do apologize for those enjoying it, but if that amount of players is so small, while spending very little of anything (less money). I question its longevity.

It should have never existed in the first place. They haven’t released new solo content in god knows how long and the last one was pretty underwhelming. They should use that effort and development time to bring more interesting solo content with every expansion.

Each set has a theme and a story behind it that should be further explored with new solo content releases. They are fun to complete and they give a nice background to every expansion. The book of mercenaries was awesome, it’s a shame they stopped moving in that direction.

why shouldnt players who built a mercenaries collection be allowed to use it ?

I was bothered by that other comment as well.

It’s still a functional game mode and there is still plenty of content for interested players to explore.

I haven’t finished the stuff, but now that I know the mode isn’t going to make me continuously behind the meta curve I might actually play it more.

The issue is that this mode requires maintenance, and if allowing the mode to exist isn’t resulting in any revenue (or at least enough to justify that maintenance), from a business perspective, it might not be a good idea. That’s all. I’m not attacking you, nor anyone else, for enjoying the mode.

It’s a shame, i typivally enjoy mercs for a few weeks at a time when there’s new content before getting bored and moving on. Which is exactly what i do with standard mode, theres nothing wrong with that.

It does sound like an excellent update, and i’ll probably enjoy playing it for a week or two- i’ll even spend some gold on packs, but there won’t be a reason to return to this mode after i grow tired of it the next time lol

What happens when you release a mode with the most basic graphics, PvE that was the incentive for many players to partake, the lies on top of lies (i.e. those excess coins will have a point Soon™), and surely players of this mode have a myriad of other unjustified and/or anti-consumer examples.

I blame no one for playing this mode. Despite there being better games similar to this mode, the IP is by and large the reason players bothered.

The saddest part of this mode is that it had so much potential – so much potential. Greed as well as half-assed attempts to make it better, somehow, essentially left it out to dry.

RIP.

It had potential but the execution was just horrible all around. They needed to pull in outside help to set it up correctly.

There were no lies, how dare you?! I like the Renown Coins.

You explain all of their actions monetarily, then complain that they are a business.

There is nothing wrong with this mode; there is nothing wrong with this company. I get so tired of reading these hateful comments.

I wager the fact that this mode is being essentially discontinued that there is something wrong with the mode.

Nothing wrong with this company? Is this just an out of season april fools joke?

it doesn’t need to be removed, but they could take it from the front and center main menu and stick it under modes where no one who isn’t looking for it has to see at it again.

well since they are no longer adding new contents, it’d be nice if they could offer free diamond portraits. =)

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

The monetization of this mode is flat awful. The fact that there are diminishing returns for spending money makes the game a failure before it launched.
