Mercenaries builds and guides

Whats the best source of information for the mercenaries mode? Like some top tier meta comps etc?

I hardly play it because i got stuck on the lvl 30 snow map bounty, winterspring i think, back in october when it released. I rarely touch this mode unless i have to, like for this legendary quest we have right now.

I want to build something fun to play yet strong.

Out of Cards has articles about Mercenaries, usually guides to the quests. They also have a forum devoted to Mercenaries, including a very nice ongoing thread called “Beat Those Bounty Bosses”, or something like that. Just go to Out of Cards, then select the Mercenaries Portal.

HSReplay has support for Mercenaries behind a pay wall.

Edit: I use three teams, a Fire Team based on Fire Damage featuring Balinda Stonehearth, Barron Geddon & Ragnoras, a Nature Team featuring Mulfarian, Guff, & Bru’Kan, a Murloc team, there are five & add Brightwing.

Old Guardian is the main resource for Mercenaries. Very helpful.

Good teams: In addition to the Fire Comp and Nature Comp that Mountaineer mentioned, other good ones are:

  • Frost - Balinda, Varden, Lokholar, Jaina, use Varden’s equipment to quickly ramp up frost damage as things freeze, for example due to Balinda’s elemental.
  • Orcs - pretty self-explanatory, though you need Thrall and his Ring of Strength for them to be truly good.
  • Holy - Velen & Anduin are the core, I usually bring Cornelius as the third member and often have a holy green like Tirion or Tyrael as a bench option. Sometimes Varian is handy to wipe out encounters with lots of Attack-based green enemies.
  • Shadow - Queen Azshara is the key with Xal’atath; works similarly to Nature with the constant healing effect. Kazakus, Vol’jin, and Y’shaarj are typically the other members of the team.
  • Smite Cornelius - Smite, Cornelius, Rokara, on turn 2 Overboard, Blessing of Sacrifice, and Offensive Rally is a combo that can often win the fight immediately.
  • Dragons - Yu’lon, Sinestra, Nefarian, Brightwing. Very sturdy, with Yu’lon’s pearl and Sinestra’s heal, especially if Brightwing is the third member on the board with even more healing.

Pirates can also be kind of decent, but they’re more at the level of Murlocs. It takes most of your party slots to make it work, and generally doesn’t work as well as some of the other teams. The Old Gods variant of Shadow Comp (Azshara and whichever two you prefer of the three Old Gods) can also work, but not as well as using Kazakus and/or Vol’jin instead in my experience. The Old Gods can be pretty entertaining though!

If you’re having trouble with Winterspring, I suppose I should also mention the starter comp, Samuro, Xyrella, Cariel. Those three can do everything until somewhere in Blackrock Mountain, when you start to need other comps like Nature, Holy, Fire, etc.

Old Guardian has started talking about a Bainegore comp (Baine, Trigore, Niuzao) recently, but I haven’t tried it since Baine still hasn’t appeared on my task board. :slightly_smiling_face:

OG has the most comprehensive set of guides for Mercenaries, whether it’s events, specific bounties, heroic unlocks, or difficult mercenary tasks.

This changes once u put triggore in the mix, pirates become pretty stronger that way.

old guardian is great but he has been known to make weird decisions …like not using varden’s +frost on freeze equipment.

frost is now my new favorite comp (was fire obvs.) thanks to someone here who was touting it. to test the comp I ran the entirety of the new bounties in heroic, resetting only to make mystery tokens available with an alternate path if I didn’t like what was rolled and only had trouble with a single bounty – still killed it.

Nature Comp is solid for most heroic obj.
Malfurion (Liferoot staff) + Bru’kan + Guff

Every time you cast a spell + 6 life. When pick up a “serpent bite” you gain additional 6 life.

Con: rounds take longer for the healing animations
