Just hit 7K in battlegrounds. Now I have opinions

After returning to HS and doing mostly this for the passed month or so I just hit 7K in BGs. From my understanding I am allowed to have an opinion now.

Anything deathrattle is OP and no fun to interact with.

Often when I see undead 3-4 people are racing to try and put together a team. This is because it is super powerful at all stages of the game and has multiple routes to success which are all extremely easy to assemble. You can pretty much grab whatever and top 4 with any luck.

Pirates shouldn’t be about this summoning BS they should be about gold. But the gold strat is crap and I can’t get it to work at all because having 7 pirates with high attack and no health is worthless cause it loses to any summoning build or any build with DS in it, which is pretty much every other build. I suggest putting grifter in a lower tier and buffing Peggy Sturdybone.

When I investigated what people thought was good I was told beasts are terrible. Those people are wrong. Another extremely common top 4 from the lowest ratings all the way to 7k. In fact! I got first to pass 7k and I had to kill two golded up Rivendare beasts to do it (Quillboar with cave hydra OP).

In a final note I would have loved to complain about how crap dragons are, but they got a considerable buff recently. Still, I would like to add that for how important Persistent Poet is to dragons (for the most part) it just cant be in the tier it is. It should be in tier three like so many other linchpins.

Thanks for stopping by!

You can have an opinion about BG’s at any Rank. Just keep in mind that the game is very different at different ratings. In fact the game itself actually changes as you get higher rating. 8K is about the upper end middle of brackets for the game. 11K+ is much higher and the game plays very different.

With that said Token builds at lower ratings are general very good with the exception being beetle. Beetles are just bad in general after they got nerfed. Pirates used to be pretty good overall but now that the Captain has been removed they drop off fast. Undead are the only token build that can be played in upper brackets but it’s a tough fight to get first with them.

They probably meant Beetle builds, which are terrible.

You won’t see a single player in the upper ratings playing a Cave Hydra it’s that bad.

The token build is the only viable build. The Abomination build falls off greatly around 8-9K when most opponents will have multiple minions bigger than the single abomination that is possible currently. At lower ratings it probably works better since it’s an easy combo to setup and lower ranked players don’t see the lines for the builds that are more complex yet and make much bigger minions from other tribes.

Where do people read about the latest combos? I don’t believe that many people go ~8K and they do it only intuitively because similar people don’t do that well in constructed. Is it bgknowhow?

I mean bgs in terms of complexity are like having constructed with a gigantic deck of all cards. You won’t play it well until you know all the cards but in constructed they are few so that’s fast.

I have always found this odd in gaming. I am 7K. There has to be some 80-90% or so of people below me. For ALL those people. Beetles is very reliable and strong. It most certainly is if only you do it.

So, what does ā€˜terrible’ mean here? It has no place amongst the super elite?

At 7K or lower you can expect at least two people to go beasts, at least one of which will certainly place. They aren’t doing that because it is terrible.

The answer should be something like ā€œbeetles does not scale well when everyone knows exactly what they are doing.ā€

Isnt anything above 7k like the top %15 of the entire playerbase?

Players get hung up on builds and think they will always be good regardless of the rating you are playing at. Auto battlers simply do not work that way. As you move up in rating you learn new things about the game and make better builds that push you higher and higher.

Once you hit about 8K you will rarely if ever see a Beetle build end game unless the player got insanely lucky and a good build quick. Oddly enough i had a game last night playing on APAC. I’m a little over 12K ATM there but this was a second place and the lobby ended on turn 12. I lost to a Curator Build that had 2 massive elementals hiding behind 2 taunted Amalgams with Prosthetic hand reborn on them and then 2 Golden Kangor’s. I simply could not get through all the venomous with enough 100/100+ beetles to make a dent in the elementals in the end.

FYI: In case i didn’t say it. This was an extremely lucky build. I played a Wisdomball and the entire tavern turned into Striders. That’s how i had 2 golden ones.

I quit out and took the 2nd place knowing i had no counter play to his board that i could build fast enough. From about turn 8 or 9 onward i was using Striders to trigger Gold and a Beetle buff multiple times. then letting it all die and let the massive beetles clean up boards. The way they are positioned there was me moving things around to try and counter his build and i ran out of gold to do anything so i quit.

All that said if you can hit this and do it that fast then sure Beetles will scale enough to do well but for context his Elementals had 1K+ attack and health each on Turn 12. that’s how different the game is at upper ratings.

Heck i saw Jeef playing a dragon game the other night and he had all his dragons and golden Brann ALL over 5K+ health and attack by turn 11. The guy plays on another level and sees all the lines. The top players find ridiculous builds out of stuff you just don’t see.

I learn a good deal of it by having it done to me and then reverse engineering how they got the build to work. Sometimes though i would just see Jeef or Babbit play a build and see how the interactions work. Sometimes i just stumbled onto a build and the light bulb goes off. Playing and playing and honestly losing or experimenting is the best thing you can do. Don’t get hung up on rating. Even the best players have losing streaks but they generally learn as they lose and climb right back.

So you never visit any site, read any stats, or read any advice?

I’ve gotten those beetles up around 400/600 or so and they are pretty strong. I’m at 8220 rating atm.

Outside of having Jeef or Babbit running in the background while i play. Not really.

That’s an anomaly played in a specific anomaly. It’s not something you can replicate each time you play beetles. Unlike other tribes that you can regularly repeat massive boards with.

It’s not an anomaly that gets beetles that high. Just Rivendares are hawkstriders pumping a golden beast that adds +2/+4. If you have the hero that destroys a DR, then brings back to life when space, then moves even quicker.

So you just couldnt find a straightshot to remove the taunt and reborn from the glamglams?

…edit: or a single tunnel blaster to kill the kangors first?

Wierd.

Yep. I’m currently at 7514, I’m sick of DR builds because there are no counter-tech cards for DR like there area for Venomous, Poisonous, Reborn, Taunt, or Divine Shield. There’s also no counter for stealth, but it’s more of a niche thing, so that’s fine.

According to the last time we had actual official data on it from a hearthstone game designer (2021), 7-8k is the top 3-6% of players.

None of that would have stopped what they were doing. The blaster would never have triggered the amalgams death since they have much higher health. A straight shot would have been interesting but not enough. To be clear the venomous minions weren’t my problem. It was the massive elementals that are hard to get at behind all the venomous. The Kangor’s would still carry them. That’s how they dispatched the big minion builds in top 4.

Really depends on how far into the season you are. Early on yes but later on there are many more 8K+ players.

I’m gonna trust official data over ā€œtrust me, broā€.

No matter what, 8k is absolutely not middle. It’s cool that you’re so high rank, but just be aware that rank distribution does not scale linearly.

You had two chickens and a golden titus.
Blaster would have killed both golden kangors before the battle even started…

So clearing/minimizing the poison was your problem and you fail to even recogize that in your own words.

Wierd.

Yes but i wasn’t getting through the Elementals without getting maximum beetle value from the DR minions. I need space for that and i would have shorted myself the space. I needed as many beetles as possible to chew through Elementals with 1K+ health each.

Look i’m done posting here to responses form you. You are the same as Carnivore. You are perfect and nobody else can ever give you the right answer because you are perfect and are the best at doing everything. Try some humility at some point in life.

Beetles are bad but feel free to have one of your pointless arguments with someone like Jeef who will tell you the exact same thing and the same reason i just did as to why. I’m sure you are smarter than everyone else.

Humble enough to accept when i make a mistake. Humble enough to take constructive criticism.

Its not my fault you highroll a cookie cutter strat and fail to adapt when needed.

The real issue is you glorifying internet personalities and telling people the top ~%3 of players dont do x and y strats because some nobody on the internet says theyre bad.

Try some independent thinking at some point in your life.

ā€œYes, butā€ is almost always preceeded by some lame excuse. This is no exception.

If you cant recognize that getting out of a goldrin for a tunnel blaster could have drastically affected that outcome then its ever more apparent high ranks in bgs are meaningless and are only an indicator of how much of your life you wasted on it.

it is the most luck dictated game ive ever played. Which makes it about the most frustrating game I’ve ever played. It’s like playing competitive slot machines, lol. If it doesn’t give you the cards you need, then you lose. Because it hooked up somebody else and they will win. Sure, there is some skill involved in seeing the possibilities and knowing what is actually good. But, beyond that, it’s all luck.
