That to me was peak hearthsotne. It had a great new keyword that did RNG correctly. Most classes had 2 -3 decks they could play. the atmosphere, the fun, it was the best expansion ever to me.
Then expansion after expansion, it just seems like everything that followed was so …
Uninspired.

I remember ungoro being all about murloc paladin and discovering as many tarims as possible.

I remember Tarim but not Murloc Paladin really. I think Paladin was more of Curve class of just best minion.
IDK… Un’Goro was the only time I played Paladin seriously but it was a Control Paladin Elemental deck because Lightforge Rag was great
Edit: @Geoxyx
I think Un’Goro was maybe my favorite HS expansion meta, definitely top three. I loved Kalimos and the entire Elemental tribe. For me I think it is WotOG still #1, J2U #2, and maybe WW #3.
ungoro had the 1 mana 1/3 murloc that changed paladins HP to summon a 1/1 murloc, right? … and the megasaur. def remember murloc paladin wreaking havoc if thats the case. might be mixed up on the time line, though.
mind you, that was pre warleader nerf!
I miss Bro9 and Day9 streams.
Some gems we will never get ever again.
Yeah Un’goro was my favourite meta as well.
Well it started really bad with quest rogue introduction which took on the ladder but then again there were many interesting decks to play with (only warlock wasnt good at the time).
- Druid had aggro druid and midrange jades (LoL innervate was unnerfed at the time but still nothing felt broken - yeah innervate flappy bird turn 1 existed but still the deck was OK)
- Hunter had a really nice midrange beast hunter
- Mage had quest mage and controll mage
- Paladin had murlocs and probably the best controll deck i ve ever seen in Hs s history (not in turns of power lvl but in turns of flavor and fun)
- Priest was just being priest running otks with inner fire (but at least the whole ressurect archetype was nothing at the time being), silence priest , controll priest and miracle priest (yes this existed)
- Rogue had the quest rogue (bliah)
- Shaman had a really nice elemental themed deck and murlocs
- Warrior had aggro pirate warrior and Controll quest warrior
So some annoying decks were definitely introduced by the time but in general the meta was really great.
How was Un’Goro meta during Un’Goro? I don’t know for sure because I wasn’t playing then, but the impact of Un’Goro cards were clearly felt during later expansions. You had the elementals, the Quests, and a lot of wondrous animals.
What’s the pattern here for enjoyable metas?
“Fairly” statted minions that had unique effects but no nasty surprises or instant turn arounds^. And likeable, distinct characters. What is a Corrupt Elementalist these days supposed to be, anyway?

Sincerely…
The hearthstone public has changed far more than the game itself.
Part of why un’goro was enjoyable was how diverse the play styles were and a meta like that would be whined nowadays like there was no tomorrow.
Just imagine a metagame that you can climb with whatever playstyle you want but also have to face all of those playstyles.
Nowadays players would just whine like no tomorrow wanting all the stuff they not like nerf to Oblivion instead of recognize how fun it was.
Because people are all about not allow others to play stuff they not like instead of concentrate in their own fun.
Obs: people liking or not pre nerf metagame of un’goro was better than post nerf.
Holy crap we get it, you wanted Galakrond to dominate this games meta for the next year and Blizzard didn’t let it happen, how terrible.

Naxx, BRM, LoE, and Old Gods were the best sets imo.
I remember Un’Goro that’s when the downward slide began. It introduced the clown fiesta card generation RNG we know and hate today and it was the start of the power creep train with quests and hero cards.
Quest Rogue was still among the top 5 most retarded decks of all time. And yes as mentioned Stonehill into Stonehill into Tarim meant GG. Ungoro thematically was cool, but there was a dark side to it.

Un’goro was the first meta I hit rank 5 in, and the first time I really viewed HS seriously as a competitive card game.
I shall quote our 1 and only true love friend from un’goro all shall remember that was the ‘must have’
“Get out of my jungle” - He finally got us kick out, you really think he wants us back? I mean in Wild, he’ll pop by to remind you to get out still…
jokes aside.
outside the small pocket of the meta, HS wasn’t as hard core meta decking as it is now, back then you had a few meta decks, but it was still a decent meta , while I am Druid main, I wasn’t as big fan of Jade druid back then, I remember having more of a Beast Druid back then I think that why whenever I play Brawls now in wild, i always add Tortollan Forager, and stonehill, as those were 2 really solid cards back then
Cobolds and catacombs was the best meta imo.
Had the same stuff as unguro but also deathknights and many super fun cards from cobolds and catacombs. Generally metas before rotations tend to be more fun than after because we have more toys to play with
