title lol. im a veteran that has been playing since 2015 and the last time i really sat down and played was early 2020. now im faced with 6 new expansions i know nothing about, mini sets, etc.
what advice can you give to me who wants to get back into the game, preferably standard? it just feels like a lot lol
Play battlegrounds and farm gold for the next expansion.
Stay out of duels unless you have all the right broken cards.
Arena isn’t very fair anymore and unless you’re a shark it’s a bad play to swim.
If you like to play minion-based classes this isn’t your meta.
There are only seven archetypes right now that have a positive win rate at competitive levels. Implock is the most fragile but also the least expensive to craft. Most of the rest are super dusty expensive.
ignore the hateful trolls and the unproductive sewage they spew all over the forums.
I’d just start grinding your daily quests and earning that gold.
as a returning player you should get a free “Welcome back” deck of your class choice… do some research to find out what the best one to get is.
if you spend money/gold on packs i’d focus on the recent ones - Sunken City and Castle Nathria… as you’ll get the most value out of those sets.
craft what you need out of the older sets (use your gold cards for dust)
dont go crazy with crafting. it can ruin your collection - keep in mind nerfs do happen. so dont put all your eggs in one basket.
focus on getting the most out of what you open. grow your collection organically. dont cannibalize yourself into oblivion. if that means you have to hang out at low ranks while you get your collection up to snuff… so be it.
Did you log into HS yet? You’ll be greeted with one choice of a “returning player deck” pool for each class after some warming-up rounds, a full deck from last season’s meta for free. They are functional but of unequal power, so chose wisely - or maybe wait a few days, until the nerfs & buffs are live (next Tuesday) and the “Dust” has settled on what’s good and what’s bad.
So you got a free deck when you logged in January?
Are do you habitually login every month or so and have never gotten one at all?
Blizzard has been doing balance changes monthly. They’re about to do one Tuesday.
I recommend looking for decks that use a lot of cards from the two latest expansions, so you have something to carry you into next year and avoid decks with lots of 2021 Legendary cards.
Maybe Naga Priest, which is sort of like DS/IF but without killing you suddenly out of nowhere.
Or Imp Warlock. But I warn you, wait for the balance changes before trying it out, it’s getting nerfed for sure.
Since he logged in this January, he wouldn’t get a freebie until some time in September.
@Cyclick
There are several lists of budget decks floating around the HSverse, often with example game vids. If you don’t / didn’t get a freebie, check what cards you have against those lists. Try to fullfill your daily quests, reroll (once per day) what seems insurmountable and feed the reward track the best you can - that gets you some more packs, cards and gold.
Play the tavern Brawl (now under “Modes” from the main menu) for another pack per week and look if you have fun with the game.
DON’T disenchant your cards willy-nilly and craft away, with the patch next week there’ll be changes, so wait a few days befor sinking dust into cards.
You really should try to avoid doing that. Look at it like delayed gratification. After a good year or so, especially if you play consistently, your collection will be respectable.
Edit: This may be useful.
There are numerous quests and achievements that you can complete as a new (or returning) player that reward gold, packs, or dust. These are as follows:
“Level Up.” You will receive a card pack for raising a class to level 10.
“First Blood.” For winning a game in play mode, you will receive a card pack.
“The Duelist.” You will be rewarded 100 gold for defeating 3 human opponents.
“Crushed Them All.” For defeating all AI heroes, you will be granted 100 gold.
“Ready to Go!” This will reward you 100 gold for unlocking every class.
“Crafting Time.” You receive an additional 95 dust for the first time you disenchant a card.
