I just tried playing f2p on the Europe servers.
No sooner than I got out of the tutorial and into bronze and
I was facing decks holding cards like Ysera the Dreamer and Alexstasa life binder.
Perhaps the pros can play f2p, but the average person is in for a miserable experience.

Yeah. HS is, above all, “pay to have fun”. Assuming you’re into varied, creative deckbuilding.
The early grind is still disheartening, the tutorial terribly outdated.

What cards are your ooponents allowed to have? Those are cards from the newest set, and new players are probably dumping their gold into current-expansion packs.
Do you expect them to not use cards they got from those packs?
If a soul is priceless, it is then without price, therefore rendering the price zero, yes?
Now we can get into discussing the comparison/contrast of total void and infinity…

When do they get unlocked, Drum? How many games does a new player have to lose to get them? I am at bronze 10 and I don’t have them.

You unlock the Neutral Core cards by leveling up your classes. Once you have a total of 60 levels across any classes you’ll have the full set.
Back in the day, you had to level every class to 10 to get it’s full roster of Basic cards, remember? That’s how the Core cards are unlocked for each class, and the entire Neutral collection is unlocked before you’re done with that.

nowdays, new players can play a good meta deck for free (after the initial ranks, they choose a free deck which isn’t bad)
that’s because you only play mage, and the warrior weapon isn’t a mage card 
for new players it isn’t bad at as you may think.
For a veteran, who is used to have a lot of cards, it may feel unfair, but it isn’t
New players get a lot of cards for free compared to 3 years ago.
They won’t get out of the apprentice rank that fast if they are real new players, so they will see other real new players.
But he remembered that in order to get those free cards new players get to lose repeatedly .

That’s the best way to kill a game: it gets boring without things to do; if you have all the cards, none of your cards feel special, so, as a new player, you will have no idea about what to play, what is good and what is bad; you will search on internet for tips and you have new players using meta decks since day 1.
