I will be honest. I haven’t played hearthstone in a long time. I came back, sold some wild cards and starting playing standard after a long time away. Wow, what a load of crap this game has become. The problem isn’t the insane value that certain classes/combos can create. Its not that there are only like 3-4 total decks that you see in competitive play. Its not that certain cards are insanely overpowered. Its that all of these decks have very little counter-play. There is no reason to tech in any cards to deal with common decks. The current meta incentivizes you to just build the popular decks and just play a game of who can draw their win condition first.
Hypothetically you can try to counter the imbue decks, which is pretty much everything. The way I would WANT to do this is by using something like Blowtorch Saboteur (3 mana 3/3 – You opponent’s next hero power costs 2 more). Even a single play of this can disrupt an imbue deck. Bonus if you can shadowstep it multiple times. In one game i got a druid hero power up to cost 12. that would in theory make it impossible to cast. the problem is that there are cards that trigger the hero power as a battlecry (which wipes out the cost increase you created) and cards that have BOTH a battlecry and deathrattle setting its cost to zero. Not a base cost of zero. A TOTAL COST of zero. Thats ridiculous. Without a clear way to hamper these decks there is no reason not to play them. They are highly optimized and broken.
Other decks you play against just cast dozens of spells by turn 6 and then drop a OTK. Its dumb. So the only real way to play this game thats not just flipping a coin to see who can draw the win condition first is to try to manipulate their hand. The way I ultimately did this was to play shudderblock shaman with Ghost and Dirty Rat. If you combine Dirty Rat with Bayfin Bodybuilder its very strong. The dream is Shudderblock on 6 followed by Bayfin/Dirty Rat on 7. thats going to burn 3 minions out of their hand. If you are lucky you get one of their win conditions card and they just immediately surrender. If not, you just lose later. Against fast decks that dont hold full hands, you can use shudderblock/ghost to burn them down to just top decking, but its still the same problem. if you dont draw shudderblock you just lose.
I was able to get Legend last season doing that, but its just not fun. Its not about board control, tempo, assessing who the control and beatdown are or any of the other things that make a CCG fun. Its just a different drawing game, but instead of trying to win the game you are trying to break their deck before they are able to get 4 10/10 minions for 8 mana while wiping your board every turn.
