In Mercenaries mode, How can you tell if a character is Horde or Alliance?
Usually
Dwarf, Dranei, Human, Night Elf, and Gnome will usually be Alliance.
Tauren, Troll, Orc, Undead and Demon will usually be Horde. Rexxar (Half-Orc) is also Horde.
Not sure if Dragon, Elemental, Beast and Murloc count for either, but they may on a case by case basis.
Other than that you generally need to know the Warcraft lore to know.
Thanks. I’ve never played WOW. I played Warcraft 1 a thousand years ago. My knowledge of this universe all comes from Hearthstone. “Tazdingo!” means more to me than the most epic Warcraft plot.
Worgen are most often Alliance if they’re not feral (in which case they’re not rational enough to form a loyalty to either side). Goblins tend to be Horde; they’re almost never Alliance but often run independent. Pandaren are found equally in the Alliance and Horde and also have a large number of independents. Blood Elves are usually Horde; High Elves (what few remain) are usually Alliance.
the dragon aspects shouldn’t be either faction, same with the beasts (at least from my experience with blink fox)
I would take the beasts that are used as starting pets for hunters based on their race in WoW; though that would require pretty specific knowledge for people without it being called out on the cards.
yeah I really don’t see why it isn’t just printed on the card
Reading around, it’s apparently based on the creature type it has
Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Draenei is Alliance
Troll, Orc, Tauren, Blood Elf, Undead is Horde
Anything else isn’t either.
This is from Chadd Nervig, a Hearthstone developer.
The one exception to this is the Lich King is a Human but gets Horde buffs, not Alliance buffs. This is apparently a bug caused by him being Undead in early pre-release versions.
According to this, Rexxar should not be Horde since Half Orc is not listed as one of the Horde types, but I don’t have confirmation on somebody testing that.
if I recall Rexxar in wow npc walks around with the title “hero of the horde”
An easy way to guess is. Does this character look like they belong in a pop band? If yes than it’s likely alliance. If it looks like it belongs in a metal band it’s likely horde lol.
Can the devs please, please in a future update put this on the cards!
I mean its such a basic thing to do.
Especially since lore-wise, some characters would be in Alliance based on their race (like Millhouse) but are very much not actual in the Alliance.
A simple A or H in the corner of the card would suffice.
I’ve felt this way since Cataclysm…
I too find this confusing and frustrating as is, and honestly think they should just replace all the horde/alliance effects with different ones rather then add it to the cards. Putting Horde/Alliance/neither on the mercs would still be helpfull though if they keep these mechanics in the game.
It needs a card marking or some hover over card text, some are clear if you know some lore, some are not. You cant really be expected to know.
Lore has nothing directly to do with it, and you don’t need to know any lore to know if a merc is Alliance or Horde. It is completely clear if you know the rule, with a couple of exceptions, one of which you can guess and one of which is a bug. They don’t explain the rule to you, and that’s bad, but otherwise it’s pretty clear. It’s all based on the card’s tribe type. If it’s Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf or Draenei, it’s Alliance. If it’s Orc, Troll, Tauren, Blood Elf or Undead, it’s Horde. If it’s not any of those ten, it’s neither Alliance nor Horde. The two exceptions are Rexxar, who is Half-Orc but the game treats him as an Orc and therefore as Horde (I have tested this and he gets both Orc and Horde bonuses), and the Lich King, where there is a bug that he is treated as Horde and not Alliance despite being Human, most likely because he was Undead in early pre-releases.
