Hit Legend with DH. Here Are My Thoughts

So I made another post about imbue mage and how that deck just feels underwhelming. I decided to switch to other decks to experiment with ranging degrees of success. Basically went on to play imbue hunter, dragon warrior, and then finally hit legend with armor DH.

Just as a baseline, none of these decks except for imbue mage feel bad. Imbue mage, like most modern decks, can have some pretty good plays but decks aren’t just their high-end, you need to look at the anatomy of what it does turn-to-turn and what the wincon of the deck is. Right now the metagame is majorly concerned with putting up boards every turn whereas imbue mage isn’t even establishing a board until turn 5. This is kind of true with the other imbue decks as well except druid just has a much more massive payoff that accelerates its own strategy much because of the nature of cards like Photosynthesis and Hamuul Runetotem.

I don’t have much to say about imbue hunter. There are a ton of ways to play it with different packages including what I played which was a mostly aggro package looking to filter targets for the hero power and play a big King Plush as a finisher which can regularly just spin the board (return to deck) and hit for 20 damage. This basically works against anything that isn’t armor DH.

Then we have dragon warrior. This deck is actually good. The problem is that this deck unfortunately has a huge issue with bunk turn 1 hands where you can’t mulligan into any dragons for your low cost creatures and those turn into non-games since you either have to accept you’re going to play vanilla 2/3s against everything else that’s actually doing things to progress their gameplans (such as drawing or imbuing) OR you sit on them and hope you topdeck a dragon for a turn 3 play where you play either of the dragon two drops and a Darkrider/ Giftwrapped Whelp. This still is clearly not ideal since by this time Giftwrapped Whelp no longer performs its function of being an early game threat and you’ve lost any damage it might have done playing it turn 1.

Outside of the insane low floor the deck has, it ALMOST has infinite gas, or at least has enough in the tank to play through most games. Priest has literal infinite cards so that might be an issue if you can’t threaten late game but luckily the efficacy of this deck’s own minions as well as priest and everything else having limited board wipes means you can usually continue to have range even in the late game to get a win since the priest usually is behind on tempo. They big hose out you need to worry about is Repackage. This deck doesn’t care about leech DK or imbue mage. Imbue hunter can actually threaten it since the deck doesn’t have access to a lot of armor gain since the core set doesn’t have what should have been staples with Emberscale Drake and Molten Breath (Descent of Dragons and Rastakhan’s Rumble). We also missed out on important aggro pieces like Alexstrazsa’s Champion but whatever.

So this all comes down to armor DH. Basically every strength of every good deck in the format is in this deck. Infinite value? This deck has infinite value. Efficient board clears? This deck has efficient board clears. Early pressure? Card draw? This deck has all of those two. And unlike warrior, the literal armor class, this deck is actually unkillable. I have had mirror matches with this deck that have lasted 40+ minutes because we both play a Kil’Jaeden and it devolves into a slog of playing whatever minion we draw next after we Black Knight our Starships and it really is just Don Frye vs Yoshihiro Takayama (if you know you know). I’ve won a lot of my games by playing Dirty Rat and trying to hit their own Kil’Jaeden on low-power turns (where it’s most likely they’ll follow up with a Kil’Jaeden to win the race on the buffs) but this mirror match is MISERABLE. Not only that but I basically do not lose games against any of the other decks listed above aside from very unfortunate games where I brick early and can’t get my game pieces onto the board before I die. I went from Diamond 5 0 stars to legend in like 5 hours playing this deck with 1 loss and the other losses I’ve had have been since hitting legend and only in the scenarios listed above where I’m sitting at 2800 legend. So not super high legend but not low either.

In any case I can’t speak to what’s happening in top 1000 but in other seasons where I have been top 1000 legend, 500 legend, etc. deck lists change very little and it’s mostly players playing better and maybe one high skill deck that you don’t see outside of the top ranks (like some variant of rogue). I suspect that armor DH is still probably the best deck in top legend and although I don’t think I care to continue playing this deck to get there, I also don’t care to climb further with any other decks because many of the games I’m playing right now are mirror matches and it’s a tall order to kill DH before it gets going.

So basically, armor DH needs nerfed. All my other games with other decks seem fun (except for mage which just feels like I do very little in most cases even though it’s probably my favorite deck) and the meta is ALMOST really good except for this looming threat that’s armor DH and is honestly ruining all the fun I’d probably be having otherwise.

What was your imbue mage? I find most of the wisp payoff cards suck, but have had good results with the Protoss package. The Colossus allows for significant burst damage and board clears, and against the leech DK the imbue package was longterm cardless value that grinded him down.

What’s your imbue hunter list? Looking for a good one.

God the frustrating feels of playing ANY deck against armor dh almost got me to quit standard immediately.

I was playing a control warrior with Ysondre, because I pulled the signature of her and wanted to force her to work, and let me tell you if it weren’t for her bugs she would still feel incredibly sad because of the wide variance of dragons and not feeling “good” until she’s already died two or three times.

To say nothing of people running MC tech and things like that because of armor DH, neutering my wincon. The deck is way too aggressive for a deck with as much value as it has and it can otk any “mediocre”/tier 2 deck with absolute ease using the exodar. It’s boggling that they thought a 2 armor nerf to Arkonite Defense Crystal would be “enough” with the cards they shipped to DH in this set.

I love these I hit legend using this overpowered deck and now think it should be nerfed posts. I was part of the problem and took advantage of an obviously overtuned deck to make legend and now want it unavailable for others posts. (I.E. I rely on overtuned deck at the start of expansion to farm f2p but i swear i have a good heart)

This literally happen to me, i wanted to try several times hammul in standard, and i was having fun until i found one of these…
Its so obvious how broken it is that you dont even want to try to solve the meta but just wait for the nerfs…

Yeah, no desire to play this expac. Glad I didn’t spend any money on the game this time around.

I agree but just hitting legend is quite easy regardless so it doesn’t really matter what they used to get there. I’ve been doing it every month (that I played) for years with all sorts of decks - some meta and some homebrew (I mostly like to play homebrew  )

Nope. Most top legend players are Token Hunter (often with Zerg package).

I instacede against DH and Hunter.

No respect should be given to anyone playing those decks.

You take video gaming stats too seriously. Also the problem is the Devs not balancing the game.

It’s natural for players to follow the path of least resistance if that path exists by imbalance.

You could have saved yourself all that typing and just posted That.

I understand that, people should play whatever they enjoy, I was just pointing out that coming on the forum to advocate that the deck be nerfed AFTER you use it to hit legend rank seems disingenuous.

amazing achievement buddy. abusing a hated deck, ruining everybodies games and then go to the forum to brag and call for nerfs

Good to see that everyone thinks this cancerous BS Armor DH should vanish from the face of the earth.

I hit legend almost every season. The fact that this is how you’re interpreting it is kind of insane. If I were just hitting legend for the first time at the end of the season, my MMR would not be putting me in the top 3000 standard rankings. Also, even if that were the case of being carried by a deck, doesn’t that just further justify it being nerfed?

I wasnt not trying to imply that you would not have reached legendary without the deck.

If you thought the deck was overpowered why not just play a different deck? Instead of adding to the issue of EVERYONE playing it? I know why, because it provides a huge advantage. The same advantage you would now like to be removed for everyone else now that you no longer have use for it. How is that an insane way for me to look at it?

Or could it be that the expansion is new and that I want to try out a variety of archetypes to see what I chime with more, learn the best ways to compete against them by first hand experiencing the anatomy of their playstyle, and also maybe climb to get last minute end of season rewards?

Also, tu quoque. Someone can be an advocate for something despite personally engaging in a behavior. A criminal is not suddenly wrong for telling children to stay out of certain groups less they also find their way into prison. It’s a flaw in logic suggesting that an opinion is right by compulsion of hypocrisy (which playing this deck isn’t – again, there are other motives).

Yes you can advocate against an activity you participated in after reform but that’s not what you are doing.

I did not see you post anywhere advocating that people should not take advantage of overturned decks to hit legend rank prior to calling for nerfs to said decks.

You took advantage of the deck, exhausted its benefit to you personally, want to play other decks but are now coming up against the same problem you contributed to.

Play a different deck and let the armor dh deck farm you for a bit so others can hit legend with it as you did. Or in the very least accept you surrendered your right to complain after relying on it for legendary.

You are an actual clown. Quote me in my post where I specifically said I’m playing DH to climb to legend. All I said was that I played DH, hit legend where I wasn’t having success with other decks, and this post is about my experience playing various decks during that process and why DH is overtuned after playing it firsthand.

You need to go back to school if your reading comprehension is actually this bad.

So let me get this right, you have been a top 500 legend player and it took you 5 hours to realized armor DH is overtuned? You are also a forum visitor so you didnt see any posts about it?

So you used armor dh for 5 hours to hit legend, decided you didnt want to play anymore with any other deck except armor dh because of mirror matches(armor dh overpopulation), came to forums to advocate armor dh is nerfed so you can play with other decks. What am I missing?

Ouch.
