I am stuck trying to finish Heroic One Night in Karazhan, with only the chess battle remaining. After many attempts, I started to look online for guides and videos, most of which are a few years old at this point, and there seems to be something different now. In every successful attempt I found online, the Black King does not hero power on turn 2, but in my experience (which is a few dozen attempts so far, sometimes playing on turn 1 and sometimes skipping) he always starts hero powering on turn 2. In many of the successful videos they have gotten to turn 4, or even 5, without the Black King having used his hero power, such that reasonable positioning of your units allows you to make progress. To me, having the pawns destroyed right from the beginning makes the unit disparity seem insurmountable, but I thought I would ask here. Can anyone confirm that this battle is still winnable? Am I meant to restart it until the AI decides not to hero power? Any idea on how many times that might be? Thanks in advance for any advice.
I was doing heroic Karazhan some time ago (actually, about a year a so, so it’s been quite a while), as a returning player, since I hadn’t bothered with it back in the day when it was launched… I’d found out that apparently the A.I. had indeed been tuned up since then, but the only fight where I realised that and it mattered for me was the last one, which seems no longer beatable with the old cards and strategies (in fact, it’s the only one remaining for me from the old adventures which).
I don’t know how useful that feedback is for you, but I can say that this encounter was still doable about a year ago, although it took some attempts. Maybe I’ll try testing it…

OK, after some testing it seems not a fun challenge at all, and I shouldn’t probably waste any more time on it. But then again, as far as I recall, last time it took many tries and a bit of lucky RNG (apparently, this is what ‘a small indie company’ perceives as a sign of ‘skill’, with its own vision of chess) to beat that one. I’m still unsure about a definitive answer.
Ive been grinding the last 4hrs awayon this with no progress, also the last needed to complete. Closest i can get is boss at 5 hp then i run into fatigue, seems that no matter the approach it comes down to chance, super frustrating.
Edit: finally beat it! Keeping 2 kings on the board with a bishop inbetween midgame was the saving grace, so much RNG but loving that tasty cardback
