I just wanted to say goodbye to the community of a game I have been playing for what?! … 3 years(?) now. Eventhough I love to debate and tend to pick verbal disputes (and have with some of you) I really want you guys to know that I never started a heated discussion in bad faith.
Eventhough I know it’s laughable and no one is probably reading this, I still feel like writing my reasons for quitting this game - if you hate those topics, please just ignore it, I’m honestly writing this for myself and I realise that.
////
Eventhough I have tried to stay calm with the game, I can rarely stay cool. Just 2 hours ago I really lost my mind after losing 1 1/2 hours straight against people on a really low rank in what felt like one rigged game after another. I love to play selfmade decks with my own recipes and yeah well … let’s say most of the community doesn’t. Who can blame them?!
I should have taken a break, I should have stayed cool but yeah well, I just can’t. This is also really bad for my health because I suffer from Psoriasis and stress is a real trigger for me so yeah … HS is really not good for my health.
That being said: I also can’t stand with a game that is led by one of the worst videogame companies ever (Activision). They’ve (just last winter) fired a huge number of their loyal workers just to please investors after having one of their most successful years.
Right now they’re taking China’s side in their dispute with Hong Kong just not to risk profit.
Is that a horrible business move? No it’s not - but it’s also disgusting as hell and I can’t teach children in class about those political problems and - at the same time - support a company that supports such practices, it just feels wrong to me.

All of this is personal of course.
I wish you a good time with the game and hope that you’ll all get the diverse and fun meta you deserve.
Have a great time.
One of the people whether we’re in agreement or disagreement that I actually tend to want to read the posts.
If you happen to actually be gone for good then I sincerely mean this when I saw that it’ll be a loss for the forums in general and that I wish you the best going forward. I respect your reason for leaving 100%. I don’t agree with BlizzAct’s actions either and can respect going the extra step =)
Sad to see you go, dude. I certainly understand your reasoning and I very much empathize on the feelings during loss streaks of one’s homebrews against a string of lucky meta-wielding opponents. Like you said, who can blame them, but it’s still hella irksome.
I know for a fact that we didn’t always agree but ay the end of the day, we’re all just a bunch of dudes (and dudettes) getting together to chill and talk some HS. Whether you still play or not, you’re always welcome to join the Commoner’s Guild - we have a lot of off-topic stuff and several folks who swapped full time to MtGA.
To you as well: Thank you so much for saying that.
I really need to quit the game for good, it’s like a bad addiction for me. I never played too much per day but I log in at least once a day and get way too invested in any news about it. I also quit watching Kibler, Trump and Kripp (and so on and so forth) because I know myself way too good - it would get weak eventually and come back.
I can’t look my students in the eyes and tell them to educate themselves about topics of global injustices and addiction and (at the same time) do exactly what I know to be bad for me and my beliefs.
I’ll probably let cardgames rest for a while now and finally catch up on my long list of “games I would have played if I just had the time”.
I respect your decision.
And agree with your reasoning:
You have standards. And decided to cut out a part of your life that has become detrimental to you.
If you are really leaving, good luck. Although I’ve only read your posts for a few months, you seemed to contribute a number of interesting ideas.
I would maybe advise against the knee-jerk.
Tencent owns parts of Activision and is a Chinese company I have read.
Businesses have always had awkward choices to make, China just dealt the NBA a real setback and China is a true authoritarian state but interacts in the global economy in a non-small way.
Shouldn’t people really be boycotting products made in China if they really care about Hong Kong?
But no — a hell of a lot of things are made in China including mobile phones/computers/car parts.
It is easy to say “I’m not going to play Hearthstone”, a trivial decision.
It is hard to say I’m not going to buy anything made in China — which would be an act of substance.
I think people quitting Hearthstone over this are just virtue signalling – a game is not an important thing and quitting a game is about as trivial and meaningless as stop watching a TV show.
And doesn’t really address the true issue at all – what is going on in Hong Kong.
In short: quitting a random game over this is passing the buck and doing a “feel good” meaningless act and selecting a truly random target.
Is this the only instance of a company cowtowing to China? Why not boycott Google who actually HELPS China do their censorship more efficiently?
Did you quit using Google search and the Chrome browser also?
If NOT, what does that say about your convictions?
I always wanted to get into Dragon Quest and DQ11 looks like a very promising point to start.
I also still have to finish Red Dead 2 at some point or another
Then you don’t read my post, mate
It’s not about “having impact” or “changing something”, I just have 2 reasons to quit the game which I believe to be right. My mental health is a concern but as I also said: I have to follow my principles (especially as a teacher) and I have to start somewhere.
Yes, I could now also start boycotting Google, Amazon and other big names because none of them are innocent but that would miss the point: Activision is getting on my personal nerves for a long time now. Does my “boycott” change anything? No and yes. It won’t change the economy BUT it will ease the burden on my conscience a little.
Afterall: It’s just a game and that should be easy enough to quit.
Feels really good to hear, I’ll miss talking to you as well.
Have a blast playing!
As much as we disagreed on almost everything, I always had massive respect for the fact we’d always be able to walk away from a dispute without hating each others guts or even just without being rude at all.
It really is sad to lose that element of respectful disagreement you brought to these forums, and you will be dearly missed.
I don’t think I need to comment on your reasons for leaving, we all feel the same when it comes to supporting China in the Hong Kong dispute and I do not blame you in the slightest for not wanting to be associated with blizzard after it.
Not too familiar with DQ, looks good graphics though. Currently playing an old roguelike though it has basic graphics and is punishingly difficult so don’t know how long for.
Take it easy bro, I may not be too far behind. I too have problems with Activision running (really “ruining”) things, profits before people will always trouble me.
This is what capitalism brings folks but this is not the right place to “debate” politics.
Hope you find happiness in your future endeavors, boycotting companies is actually what consumers are supposed to do but alas the brainwashing of today is very apparent.
RIP standard for who knows how long (at least a month until the next “BIG” update), standard mode is the only reason I had to play this month trying to make some non-zoo warlock decks work in the meta.
I 100% support your decision and understand the reasons for it. I’ve been enjoying the game lately, but truth be told I’ve had serious ethical issues supporting Activision/Blizzard for a while now. This issue with China is just the straw that broke the camel’s back for me, and I’ve uninstalled everything Blizzard, having been a customer since the original Warcraft rts game came out.
Of course you and me and however many other people decide to leave isn’t going to convince either Blizzard or China to change their policies, but it’s a small act that sends a message. A place to start. And if it reduces your stress levels and keeps you healthy, then that’s a bonus!
Best of luck to you in everything you do. And to everyone else on this forum. Each person has to make their own decision and I don’t judge anyone for continuing to play.
