Game Director Ben Lee discussing the Battle Pass

Didn’t want to derail the AMA thread into one specifically about the battle pass, and I feel like his take on the matter (which includes some straightforward promises) merits its own line of discussion.

He mentiones several times that the new system is not going to reduce rewards beyond what is currently earnable (as we’ve seen in the survey numbers) nor will it take an exuberant amount of time to do so, but that part is pretty subjective.

His quote:

https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/i78pa3/hearthstone_team_reddit_ama_august_11/g14s349?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

If - and only if - this proves to be true and not just a bunch of damage control (which would definitely blow up in their face with how the reddit and forum communities reacted toward the battlepass) then they really are finally putting some major work into overhauling and improving the gameplay experience.

The proof, though, will be in the pudding. Still not a huge fan of my rewards being so spread out. Cosmetics sure, but not packs.

I earn 7-9k gold each expansion, which I spend on the newest released packs. I buy in bulk in the beginning and then start saving for the next. This way, I get most all of the cards I want and be able to play with them right away. If this new battle pass requires a slow progression of playing to earn a few packs each week, I don’t think I would continue to play…

Trickling in rewards makes you miserable for all the cards you don’t have. If I can’t slam 90 gold purchased packs on release and the ONLY way to do that is through preordering, that will be it for me.

Before old gods I used to buy packs as they came and it made the f2p experience against people preordering terrible. By saving your gold to buy all the packs on release and then start saving again, being f2p is actually viable.

Same here, as do many of us.

What I’m hoping this is, is an acknowledgement that the numbers on that survey were pretty lackluster and that we can expect to see something far more tantalizing when they finally unveil it. He all but straight-up said “this isn’t what it will actually be”.

I don’t mind earning a handful of packs here or there - it happens through events etc ascit is anyway - but I want the ability to make a big purchase on launch day.

That is, as Ben puts it, playing Hearthstone MY way.

Did you really? Didn’t you bring in the new Blizzard/Activision CEO, with the promise to shareholders that he would maximize profits of every game.

How are you making all that money if the game is supposedly that ‘affordable’. It just falls from the sky?

How ‘cheap’ are those 20k dust highlander decks with 10 legendaries compared to decks from the past?

One thing I’ve been thinking about: back in March, WoW players got a survey like this one discussing different ways in which Classic WoW could handle the transition to Classic Burning Crusade. It’s been almost five months, and there’s been no news on the subject since, and I personally would be surprised if we hear about Classic Burning Crusade at all before Blizzcon.

Similarly, just because Blizzard is sending out feelers about a possible battle pass, I don’t think this is anything that will happen in the short or even medium term. At the earliest, I imagine we might see this implemented with rotation next April. So until we hear anything concrete (which likely won’t be until 2021), we’ll be mostly speculating.

well thats the purpose of any survey to improve something using the feedback

That requires the people in charge to listen to the feedback from the survey. Whether that happens or not is usually 50/50 in my experience.

If it’s truly on top of the current system (including irregular freebies being of the same quality as always), AKA if someone gets 0 points on the pass always and still gets the same amount of free stuff as Hearthstone has always done, it’d be a good thing obviously.

But yeah, if some sort of reward is nerfed, then screw the battle pass.

This is the sort of low key monetization that I expected from the achievements system. Although a bit less low key, if it gets up in your face about the cards and shinies you are missing every time you look at the achievements panel or whatever…

Still, this post is very positive, well-written and re-assuring. Thanks, Ben Lee.

A lot of statements that raise questions.
I dont really care,as long as i can get 2500 gold a month (or enough gold to buy the bg pass if they change prices) by doing 30 minutes of tavern brawl a week its fine with me.

getting 5k gold will take a similar time he stated. Will that also go for getting 2500 gold or 10k gold?
I hope they keep it so that you can do brawl to earn the gold, and are not forced into completing all sorts of tasks that you are not interested in.

I wouldnt be surprised if it became more difficult to earn the BG pass, right now it maybe is to easy and i wonder if there is many people buying the pass with real money. The goal is to make money in the end,but how they make money if everyone gets the BG pass for free with little effort.

Constructed i think is a lost case for blizzard tbh, lost case as in that it will be impossible to grow the revenus from that aspect of the game. The revenus will most likely keep declining slowly.
I dont see myself ever spending money on constructed again and i am just disenchanting my collection to make the decks that i like right now. When players get to that point it is difficult for them to ever go back.

If they would make constructed less accesible for f2p players with the new system then those players probably wont go spend money instead, they will most likely just quit?

Cosmetics i think is a limited market,i dont think f2p players do care a lot for those. They have other prioritys if they would spend a little bit of money. They are interesting for whales and completionists but that group of players is rather small and also on the decline?

Anyway,i am curious what they will come up with.

In spite of what He claimed, I suspect the Battle Pass idea is playing Hearthstone “their way”. Time will out.

Well, what would you rather they say lol

I would rather they had said that daily gold rewards are not going anywhere and this is merely a paid shortcut for those who don’t want to grind. I think that idea would be incredibly popular.

An ‘interesting’ example. Should this be the baseline of the said intend to maintain the value that players can earn within the game, then we look back on where we stand…

A 5000gold during an expansion cycle works out to about below 50gold each day.

The reply is very ‘cryptic’ as if the Pass is aim to supplement our way we want to play, then how can it do so?

The fundamental of Pass requires additional commitment (in time/money/effort) to reap more rewards. And using the same example, then the players will ultimately need to change and adapt to the Pass?

Curious…

He’s trying to project this image of hearthstone being a casual game that you play during a week-end, and you will just gather enough gold to be competitive as you go along.

You wouldn’t make those kind of statements trying to justify the cost of Hearthstone if you didn’t realize the cost of Hearthstone was out of control for casual players.

Yes. The achievements system is due in Phase 3. Assuming they want to spread the events means a March release date.

Could be. Or it could already be at near ready to launch state, where the survey aims to collect the last reception of the idea.

Our responses at current may affect that idea.

More importantly, the extract did not address the demographic spread of players. From F2P to payers, from casual to competitive, from all rounder to specific mode (ladder, arena, BG) and how a Pass can fit into each group’s preference of play.

Zeddy is one of the most disgruntled Hearthstone streamers. This was his opinion, which I mostly agree.
