Finished Rank 21 NA

Here to answer any questions about the meta or anything you want to know in general.

Previous best finish is rank 44. I have had higher ranks in the mid to late stages of different months, but this is my highest end of month finish yet.

The problem is, I donā€™t know what to ask. If I knew what the question was, Iā€™d probably have found the answer already xD

People usually have some questions, just general questions about the game or how to improve. From what I understand you are a top 1k player so in your case you would likely already know most things.

From your post history, it feels like you have the biggest problem with deck choices and when to swap to something else. It feels like you sometimes try to force a deck that is not right for the meta. Just an observation.

Definitely not, since I canā€™t break into top 50, let alone stay there

Iā€™m sure Iā€™m missing a lesson or two you could give me, but the problem is, I really donā€™t know what to ask

I would ask you to watch my games and correct the mistakes, but thatā€™s not something I would expect anyone to do for free xD

Out of pure curiosity. What was your most played deck for the month overall?

Probably Overheal Priest. My friend Aquabeam and I were actually the two that made Overheal Priest meta relevant this expansion as we were the only two playing it in top 100 all of June and July, then some people caught on and brought it to masters tour.

Otherwise I played a lot of Lynessa Paladin and some Sonya Playhouse Giant Rogue with the Valeeraā€™s Gift and Cover Artist combo as the win con.

People assumed Rogue is dead but in top 50 ish thereā€™s still some people playing it.

Ok I remembered a few questions:

a) When you play, do you constantly calculate the odds, knowing/checking the card pools, or do you play by intuition/feel?
b) Is there any rule of thumb which works similarly for any deck type (aggro, tempo, controlā€¦) which you think could help anyone get better?
c) Related to that, what are the last few lessons youā€™ve learned about the game which you feel have helped you progress to where youā€™re at now? If you remember them?

Are you familiar with the term ā€˜playing to your outsā€™?

I am surprised by how often people have not heard of this concept. Even if they play card games.

Yes, I am, thank you.

Doesnā€™t change anything in my questions.

Gj this is an achievement for sure. I finished woth 11 stars so Iā€™m good too.

I was not implying it would change anything in your question. I was asking because it has to do with your question A. Also, other people might see this and find it useful.

In this game it is nearly impossible to calculate every possible outcome because the astounding amount of randomness that can occur. But, understanding the most likely outcomes is definitely going to help.

A lot of the time yes I am running calculations on probability in order to take calculated risks. I donā€™t play with a deck tracker either so I just use memory.

As a simple rule you should always think of every card your opponent can possibly play on their turn given their mana and what deck they are playing. This will help you make better plays in general.

I think the biggest breakthrough lesson I learned was that your overall win rate and rank is all about your own confidence and how you perceive the feeling of different ranks. If you think rank 100 is dumpster tier then it is easier to keep queueing up games after losses in order to climb back to where you feel comfortable, which for me is around top 35. Wherever you feel comfortable is where you will stay in rank. For some people they feel comfortable sitting around rank 400, for others itā€™s rank 2000 and so on. Also because of entropy you have to play a lot, taking time off especially at the end of the month will be hard to recover from.

Yeah, see, this is what I hoped to avoid, but apparently, itā€™s impossisble xD

I mean, Iā€™m pretty sure there are players who rely completely on intuition and conceptual skills rather than calculation and analytics, but then again, those also struggle with expressing their knowledge and wouldnā€™t go around offering lessons and answers, soā€¦this was to be expected.

Yeah, idk, I donā€™t need a lot of time to accept a new rank as comfortable one to be in. In fact, when I highroll my way into record ranks, I feel (overly) confident, until the top XX players ground me xD

Yeah, this is already too advanced for me

My problem isnā€™t not playing enough, itā€™s not winning enough xD I just get mopped up by 2-digits 90% of the time

But I think I got the hard truth thanks to you. I really need to start calculating more odds xD

NohandsGamer is a player who is a good example of taking calculated risks but mostly relying on intuition. You can tell like 70% of the time he plays with intuition and then when turns are complicated he stops talking and analyzes the situation. I would say I am 60% calculation and 40% intuition to estimate. Intuition is still an important skill.

Tell that to some of our biggest posters on the forum xDD

Yeah, Iā€™m probably closer to NoHands here xD I know just basic probability formulas and apply them when itā€™s obvious, the rest is just good old trial and error

This will sound very rude because thereā€™s no polite way to say it, but have you considered the possibility youā€™re not smart enough? And I donā€™t mean youā€™re not intelligent; I mean you try to be in EU between a few dozen of the smartest people in the world; sometimes people need obscenely high APM capabilities for example and there are physical limits to humans.

Iā€™ve adopted a ā€œgrowth-orientedā€, rather than ā€œfixedā€ mindset, according to which itā€™s possible to keep getting smarter with effort (as opposed to being as smart as it was predetermined, and not a tiny bit more during your whole life).

In short, the answer is no. I havenā€™t considered it.

I mean weā€™re literally going to die at some point in our lives or lack thereof, and that happens after a deterioration of physical ability.

Just as physical ability is not immortal just the same is not equal in potential between people even if their ages are equal.

Yeah, I often do rely on rough estimates for my random plays.

For star power, for example, Iā€™ll often look for the worst possible split of damage and check if thatā€™s good enough to still play it. If only the worst possible spread will be bad, Iā€™ll still use it. Iā€™ll usually change my play if the majority of the star power rolls are bad for me, or try to set up a more favorable spread, but Iā€™m rarely fully doing odds calculations.

I ended up at 86th last month. 50 was the personal best peak.
