Elusive, really?

So, enrage had to be replaced by something MORE wordy after years of being fine…but “cannot be targeted by spells or hero powers” was a bridge too far.

And it took ten years to come up with.

That’s the best thing this patch brought to us

Now I don’t have to type the whole description to show what the issue is

Elusive is a key word in Legends of Runeterra so it’s possible there was legal work to be done to ensure use of the same keyword wouldn’t infringe on any copyright. As for removing enrage; weird decision in my opinion and I’d prefer to see it back, but “while damaged” is far less cumbersome than “cannot be targeted by spells or hero powers,” so I guess it doesn’t matter a great deal.

How many cards have they reprinted that would fit with enrage ? Opposed to how many cards that fit elusive, knowing they kinda teased that they’ll push that keyword in future sets
Enrage also was not enough as a keyword, since it was not covering the whole effect.

If I wanted to read their talking points, I’d pull up their patch notes. As an example:

Enrage: windfury damage+2

Covers it just fine.

I mean, they could have done something original. Imagine they spent all that time and billable hours just to rip off a word someone else was already using. Like spending years or money and research on your brand new soft drink, and hashing stuff out with your legal team…just to name is Koke or Bebsi.

I realize that would have been difficult, but it doesn’t hurt to shake things up once and a while.

To be honest, Elusive is an appropriate word for the effect. I don’t see any reason (other than legal) to call it something else just for the sake of not using the same adjective as another game. In my opinion, it’s unnecessarily limiting to avoid descriptive keywords simply due to their use elsewhere in the market, especially when there are already so many universal terms in CCGs (draw, summon, cast, attack, discard, destroy, spell etc).

Yeah but when you can copyright or trademark certain aspects of your established card game because you came up with it first, it does become a landmine for other card games to follow it. “Lands” for example (for the use of providing a resource for an action or another card to be played) are not a thing in other card games that I’m aware of. There are similar concepts sure, HS has Gold/Mana but I’d be hard pressed to provide any other commercial card game that uses Lands in the same exact way that Magic the Gathering does and even calls them as such. Even tho it may be an established thing by one of the popular giant card games, they can still keep it under their own domain from others copying it directly.

This crew hasn’t had an original idea since the game was founded. Who are they trying to kid?

I dont think anyone suggested they did?

Elusive is here not least because of Zilliax Deluxe 3000, where one of the modules has elusive +3 other keywords

Taking things from other games how long they’ve fallen.
Back in the day Hearthstone would be the one leading the race and now we are stealing keywords from games that have been discontinued.

What a pathetic sight.

also, since enrage was removed shortly before Frenzy had been printed, I’d imagine they probably didn’t want new players confusing the two keywords. Speaking of…

Why haven’t we seen more Frenzy keyword usage?

Enrage got removed in 11.0, frenzy added in 20.0. I wouldn’t call 3 years “shortly”
But even without the word frenzy there could have been confusion about the effect being one time only and revertable
(If I get hit multiple times, I will be even more angrier, and if I get healed, I’m still angry about being hit)
Also Quartz Elemental would fall asleep while enraged ?

But the main point for the keyword thing may just be of its usage and how they tend to design new expansion cards
According to the card library there are only 14 different cards with the text “while damaged”. 5 from classic and 9 from expansions. So they removed that keyword simply because it was of no use

If we check recent expensions, they are printing less and less minions that are pure bodies. In fact the only minion with no text we’ve had since the Scholomance academy is the 0 mana 0/3 totem, and being 0 mana makes it more interesting that just a stat pile.
Same goes for keywords, they print less and less minions that are just a single keyword of text.
In all the current standard expansions there are only 3 minions like that : a 2 mana 5/1 with poisonous, a 2 mana 2/3 with spell damage +1, and a 2 mana 2/3 with battlecry:dredge (I count that for only 1)

It only makes sens to create elusive to shorten a long explanation of a single concept they can add to their toolkit when creating new minions. It allows to add a well known effect to a minion already holding a bunch of text

Funny note : when I checked the (website) library this morning, they replaced the “can’t be targeted…” by elusive to all minions but now it’s back to the old version

frickin’

ugh, i hate how old things are in general

The whole design of the game has changed rather drastically, even if it leaves some people behind.

I rather like the keyword. Are we mad that it isn’t new? or that it is too good?
I’m not sure I understand what is wrong with it?

Mostly, the lack of originality, and took ten years to develop one word.

Also, the exact thing they did with enrage (down to the reasoning), but in reverse.

Maybe someone at team 5 bought a thesaurus and discovered the word lol.
