I havent played much mage lately. Just windering if theu have decks currently that are tier 3 or lower.
Not really.
You can say elemental mage but that deck is on the verge of death needing only people to play more optimized decks to die.
If i can say anything is that this year regarding mage cards was Record level of trash to a point that the Carrier where non mage cards who got their buffs revert last patch.
In special Sea chill. People don’t understand how important that card in particular was.
Just do a favor to yourself and to the rest of the playerbase and don’t play it. It’s that bad.
Yep, that would be the Rainbow Mage
I believe it’s now viable as a solid tier 3 deck, since everything else got nerfed and the deck got another guarantee of finding lethal in the shape of the new 8 mana spell which fills your hand with random fire spells costing 1
You’re practically guaranteed to get lethal from that card if you didn’t already draw it
I went 4-2 on it
“Tier” number is an arbitrary title you set to whatever you want. E.g. VS has Elemental mage on tier “1” this time for the high ranks. It could be anywhere if they arbitrarily decided to cut off 1 from 2 to 3 faster.
Mages are tons of fun in wild - not sure if you play wild or std. No minion decks abound
Sooo, this is how it stands:
I found a tempo/control version of Rainbow Mage with Pally tourist and even running Elemental Inspiration yet again, and I thought the deck plays cool, but it’s not quite right.
So I kept the tempo/Pally package, and added the usual suspects (1x Grill to tutor Sif + burn, 2x Sleet to stall out until we’ve prepped the lethal and - this one completely stolen from that tempo package - 1x service ace to discount Sif.
The deck is broken. Counterplay for this deck no longer exists in the meta where the oldest decks got nerfed north of 2-3 times already. It’s impossible to imagine anything that could stop me. I mean, I’ve seen priests with 300+ armor, but their win con is non-existant. Mine isn’t. It’s Sif + BOGO combo for 4-5 mana total which makes it absolutely broken, as you can both seek for burn the same turn you play it, or play more burn for extra dmg.
Noone is safe.
I’m now 7-1 (lost due to a dc, naturally) with it, and I do believe the deck is now Tier 0.

I just tried 4 games got beat 3 games by aggro and tempo on turn 6-7. Anything not aggressive just falls over to this but i can beat that with a half dozen other more interesting decks. Are you not playing against 5-6 turn aggro?
No, not for the most part
Most of my opponents are now playing starship decks, like DK, Warlock
With that said, I have beaten 2-3 such decks:
- Elemental Mage
- Swarm Shaman
- Weapon rogue
Elly mage and Swarm shaman are easy mode; just use discovers to get AoE and stall with paladin tempo package
Although, to be fair, the Mage matchup was a bit clutch, I realized mid-game on 18 hp that I’m not gonna be able to draw burn spells to kill her while struggling to survive, so I decided to give up Sif win-con in place of Tempo Pally board win-con, and it worked.
That meant that I had to use BOGO defensively instead to copy Sif, and it paid out. I turned a Tempo/OTK deck into a full-blown control just like that, by changing what I do with one spell.
If I can do it mid-game, without much practice and without even believing the deck is uber-strong, that means it’s truly broken. I’m not that good with such decisions usually.
EDIT: I do want to emphasize again that IMO, aggro decks are easier to beat than the slow ones, as the slow ones all now have some crazy “I win” card they’re working towards and have been known to stack armor in hundreds.
I must have drawn ugly my first few games. I got 3 DH in a row and i got ran over. It’s balancing out better now. I got Raylla out and played some cheap spells and got 2 solid 2 drops and then a doomsayer. My luck is terrible with this card. Games go pretty fast once you start rolling. I’m tempted to play a second service ace. Dropping the cost on any of the minions in deck is worth it and it’s a solid 3 drop with the drink spell.
This deck plays like a hyper tempo deck while collecting all the pieces with specific tutors. I’m at 6-5 now and get more comfortable with the deck. Probably the most fun Mage deck i have played in a while.
By all means, please do experiment as you see fit
Not only do our metas differ (different regions), but also I don’t consider myself nearly good enough at deckbuilding to pronounce this list as optimal. It’s most likely not.
And that’s what’s most important!! Thank you!
Ooh, yeah, I haven’t played a single DH, so I wouldn’t know if the deck stands any chance against it. Probably not without highrolling perfect low-cost AoE.
What I noticed, though, is that healing is not an issue anymore. You will reliably get to choose between some DH Fel lifesteal, Warlock Shadow lifesteal or Druid Nature lifesteal spells, without even having to take care of which spell schools you already played and which not. It’s just too consistent. If you need it, you’ll get it, sort of like you do when you play Stick up on Rogue nowadays.
Let’s go enjoy this beast of a deck before it gets dealt with as everything else around it keeps getting dealt with xD
You have inspired me to create a new deck out of the Mage/Paladin combination. I like this tempo idea so i am going to run with it some.
Make a thread about it when you’re done, I’d like to try it
I know it’s less optimal than with tourist or would not but I’m having fun in my sif mage that runs excavate and khadgar.
I run both reverb and BOGO to either copy my stuff or in a pinch their stuff.
I feel a lot weaker early on without tempo (have to rely on lucky excavates, spell gen, timely creation board clear, etc) but if I get to survive I had some fun moments
Just now beat asteroid shaman cuz I copied his spell damage minions and chadgar decided to cast fireball at his face. Secrects from excavate 4 drop helped too. Didn’t even draw sif
I’m not really sure to understand what the question means.
Do you mean that Mage has tier 1 and 2 decks and you wonder if they have weaker decks ?
