Definitive guide on how to buff protoss mage

Having played enough and seeing what other people come to with the deck during the time there are 2 things to tell about it.

  1. It sucks and can’t be even called a combo deck by 2025 hearthstone standards.

That because a game winning combo is supposed to be able to finish a good portion of the opponent decks.
With the nowadays armor output it just does not happen to MOST decks.

It let people annoyed that a card did 20+ damage but no. It does not OTK most of it’s opponent’s due to this being one of the metagames with the stupdiest amounts of armor i did see and unlike the norm this is spread in a really big amount of decks this time.
Anyone wanting a combo deck should just find another combo.

  1. The math around other cards is wrong if your intention is to make the deck decent. We did let it play enough to know it already.

Being those the problems how someone should fix it?
Give cards that stop it from acting like a combo deck and this can be acomplished by changing 2 cards:

  1. Shield battery changed from 2 mana to 1.

Shield battery could be separated in 2 cards if you want a slighty deep look on it. Hot streak and Iron hide.

The reasoning that being 2 effects in one card makes it stronger enough to justify the 2 mana cost than those 2 goes down by the window when you notice that the 2 cards we are talking about are 2 cards that did never see competitive play in standard.
Powercreep over cards that never did see play or did only see fringe play is not only good but desirable.

And if that argument isn’t enough protoss is not a card type native from hearthstone but parasitic design making it very unlikely we gonna see anything new made with it that soon if not ever.

  1. Resonance coil being able to go face

If it isn’t a combo deck like i’m said then why i’m should not be able to close the game in a normal way?

Again this is mage. The class that is supposed to be firing spells at your face.
What usually happens in long protoss mage matches is that the deck pressures the opponent that will proceed to wall up tons of armor like nothing happened and utterly ignore what is happening on the board.

Having a card like resonance coil hitting face will mean that the opponent will have to be smarter on how they control the board instead of utterly ignoring it.

That because when a class needs to play spells to get things going and their spells usually can only target minions. Slow decks get rewarded by not playing minions until very late in the game. This is the textbook definition of incentivizing non interactive gameplay.

So it not only gets the deck slighty better but makes the game more interactive to make the card able to hit the opponent hero in this case.

I don’t know if anyone is interested but if you read it with an open mind and without a conception of how a card or deck should play. You will probably agree that this is a decent solution.

That might be good. Remember Renathal slowing the game down. People were finding aggro decks killing you by turn 5 too dumb.

Not really questioning it. More attesting a fact with that.

In fact i think that if devs really want to give a perk to make mage work better it could be just with so many spells in the class needing a target or cast condition.

This isn’t a new thing and even in quest mage times many players where incentivized to just don’t play the game against the class.
A class that works based on spells should not be stop from playing spells just because it’s opponent decided that not play is his strategy.

That does not even mean to do something insane like changing the game rules but to be sure that you go low on the cards that only targets enemy minions.

This topic is more specific of protoss mage itself but if i would give an average look on the class the answer would be more on the line of this post.
Just stop with that idea that mages have to wait the opponent play.

Just ask to have the lamplighter nerf reversed and you’ve buffed protoss mage.

Its an even more boring deck than elementals was and one of the examples of why this game is in the least entertaining state it has been in for years.

Although you can alwasy play repeating spell cast hero power druid in the upcoming expansion… I bet sadly it will be far more viable than mage is.
