I have this problem too.
For the past 2 weeks i get sprites 90% of the time. I waited for the 2 server maintenance events to clear up but it wasn’t resolved.
It’s on mac/europe.
It doesn’t happen when i set region to americas. It also doesn’t happen when i use the same account in a virtual pc environment.
Hey, cycledance! Since you’re on a Mac, could you include a pathping test and allow it to run through about 15-30 hops? We’ve seen some reports come through on our support site and most of these appear to be a connection related issue. Majority of reports are from Europe, but we’ve seen a few through the Americas as well.
With the VM, it sounds like it’s probably routing through a different connection at this point. Does a VPN or alternative connection work as well?
I haven’t been able to do it with terminal cause it says: traceroute: unknown host 185.60.112.157

VPNs are programs you can download online. There are several free versions you can test on to see if it works. If your mobile phone offers mobile tethering, you can also try disconnecting from your wifi and connecting to your phone’s mobile hotspot instead. Do either of those allow you to connect? (This is a diagnostic test to help us narrow things down - not intended as a permanent solution.)

I think the long loading gives it more time to do something important. (i have a very fast ssd (700mb read and write) and internet (150/15mbit) btw and restarted my router. i also don’t have problems with other apps/games.

Moved you to your own thread since our troubleshooting was taking over the other thread. It’s actually quite odd that a VPN with a longer load time fixes this for you. I don’t know what we can take from that information on its own, but I wonder if something is forcing a timeout.
There wasn’t anything clear in your pathping - but do you run any mods (Innkeeper, Hearthstone Deck Tracker, or the like?) If so, can you uninstall those and reinstall hearthstone to see if it works?
If it doesn’t work, can you try re running your pathping while connecting to one of the VPNs that does work? If the pathping resolves to the correct host over the VPN, that tells me it’s probably a DNS thing.

I use hstracker. A couple days ago i have tested wether hstracker makes a difference because a different user here fixed his sprites like that (EU hearthstone technical support forum). In particular if it has something to do with hearthstone preferences (where hstracker writes a log that helps it).
Here is how it went:
(the hearthstone folder is the one in preferences, worked=no sprites, didn’t work=sprites)
It worked a surprising number of times. (usually i go through 6-7 sprites before it let’s me connect).
Deleting blizzard stuff in the application support folder didn’t make a difference btw.
Can you please comment on the errors in the hearthstone log i provided in the 3rd reply of this topic.

All the error report is saying that is of value is that you disconnected, which is why we were looking at things this way. It doesn’t offer great insight into why it happens unfortunately, which is why we were trying these other tests. Unfortunately because whether things worked or not was inconsistent, we’d need you to test the thing I mentioned earlier about completely uninstalling hstracker and see if it improves things. If we continue with the idea that it may be program related, uninstalling any third party antivirus programs or firewalls would be the logical next step. Firewalls can block SSL traffic and cause a failure to connect, and a VPN can sometimes work around that by bypassing the firewall of your security program.
I have no antivirus or firewalls enabled or installed. (I am very aware of all settings and manually check them. File vault isn’t enabled either btw.)
I don’t think it’s necessary to uninstall hs tracker because it wouldn’t be running. But i still did. The app and all supporting files absolutely everywhere, did a restart but sprites still come up.
I have also made a separate user where i installed battle.net and hearthstone and sprites are there.
I am not 100% sure but i think the sprite problem started on june 18th with patch 17.4.1.51510 (It is a small patch, adding in [Battlegrounds] balance changes and a card change for [Twin Slice])
I’d like to stress again that i have no other internet problems. The ethernet connection is rock solid and fast. I don’t disconnect when hearthstone is running either. (Except when idling for a long time, in which case i can NOT reconnect in-client anymore (which is a first and very likely part of the same problem)).
There have been no changes (i am aware of) with my system. The last system software was on june 1st (10.15.5). Sprites appeared later.

If that’s the case, we may need you to put in a ticket to proceed much further. We’ve exhausted most of our normal options for this. You’d want to reproduce the problem, save a copy of your system profiler for support, then contact them by putting in a ticket here. The info we need from here would be better collected over a ticket because it can include personal information we want to avoid posting on the forums.
After 3 months, dozens of hours of testing and thousands of sprites later, the problem that was introduced with the june 18th patch seems to be gone with the 18.4 patch. Confirming it was not a user issue.
I hope it stays like that so i can finally play hearthstone like usual.
Thanks for the follow up on it at any rate cycledance. Let us know if it comes back with another patch or at random. Though I don’t know if there is anything else we can offer you troubleshooting wise at that point, we can at least compare to see if we get an increase in reports at that time.
