Just want to get some clarification that I only need two copies of a given card ever, and any extras can be disenchanted…right?

You are correct and can freely DE any extra’s (even goldens). If in doubt, the game provides a warning when you select a card to DE that you’re about to have less than 2 of.
Also if you misclick, the game permits a single “undo”, but only until you click off the respective highlighted card screen. Can be easy to miss so take your time when DE’ing.
The keyword “extra” when browsing the collection is your friend. Hope this helps!

The exception would be a card that is about to get nerfed (you get full price when dusting), or for the first two gold cards if a card is going to the hall of fame (you get full dust price just for having them).
Even if you can’t make a good guess for when a card will be in one of those categories, it argues for not dusting until you are ready to use the dust (don’t dust as soon as you get the extras).
