Chef's Choice & Banned Minions, Bug or Poor Wording?

In a BG match as Onyxia and Dragons were banned.
I grabbed a chef’s choice and cast it on my many whelps and it just fizzled.
Is this just a bug when cast on buddies? Because I know it happens on the fish but I also wondered if Chef’s choice will work on a single tribbed minion, whose tribe is banned and the card could be worded more clearly.

Chef’s Choice won’t work if there’s nothing in the minion pool. If you play it on a dragon when dragons are banned, and you aren’t on a tier that includes any dual type minions or amalgams, you will get nothing

TYVM, so yeah the card should state “… same type from the available minion pool”. Although, I suppose you should at least get an any type that is available.

This isn’t a bug, and it isn’t poor wording.

Discover can only offer legal choices. If there are no legal choices, the card just does nothing. Discover has always worked this way.

But it doesn’t say it in the text, and they have updated wording before

Because it doesn’t need to, because that’s how Discover works.

Epic · Spell · Journey to Un’Goro · Discover a copy of a spell in your deck.

Does this card have the text “… if your deck has any spells”?

No, it does not. Because it doesn’t need to.

You don’t expect a spell to read
“Deal 1 damage to a minion if it is on the board and can be targetted by spells and doesn’t have stealth and is not immune. If this effect has poisonous or venomus, destroy the minion afterwards. If the minion has divine shield, deal no damage and remove the divine shield instead. If another effect is able to redirect this effect, the actual target may not be the one you selected. If this spell get countered, do nothing.”
It will just read “Deal 1 damage to a minion” because everything else is just how the game mechanics work.

I agree that pools are not explicit in the game.
In hearthstone, there’s a different pool for minions you can randomly generate in hand, and one for minions you can randomly summon. And none is the pool of standard minions. And that’s explained nowhere in the game.

But at least for battlegrounds it has been consistent that you can only generate minions that are available in your lobby. Hover the right part of the screen and it’s explicit that dragons are not in your game.
You can blame BG for not being explicit on how generation mechanics work with the number of minions in the pool, but not with what minions are in the pool

On the right (where there is the opponent’s deck of cards in normal mode), there are the valid types of servants (and below, the number of the fight).

You should not ask for a card whose type is banned by the game.
