Canary not working properly

In ranked gameplay, i’ve encountered the following situation:

  • I play the 8 cost astalor
  • Opponent summons Reska, crashes it into another minion and steals my Astalor
  • I play Canary ( rare excavate reward ), targeting Astalor.
  • Astalor is returned to my opponents hand, not mine.
This is either a bug, or Canary’s text needs to be updated, to mention that the card is always returned to the opponent’s hand, not owner’s hand.

Owner and controller are synonymous in hearthstone. If the minion is on his side of the field, it’s his, regardless of where it originated. Canary’s effect works correctly.

This isn’t a bug.

I don’t understand what you think the bug is.

Reska died and stole your Astalor. Astalor now belongs to your opponent.

Canary returned an enemy minion to your opponent’s hand.

All of this behavior is consistent with the cards as they are written.

What actual bug are you reporting here? What card behavior did you think was wrong?

That’s basically a core rule in all TCGs that originated in paper form, the earliest example I can find is Unsummon which first appeared in Alpha Magic the Gathering. This is mostly to make sure cards don’t get stolen during normal gameplay. It’s also why something that gets shuffled in always gets shuffled into the original owner’s library in these games.

A digital only game like Hearthstone can easily break this convention, as the cards are tied to the account and not actual physical objects that can get “accidentially misplaced” by someone forgetting to pick them out of their library.
