Battlegrounds best opener

Hey,

Which minion is the best t1 opener for battlegrounds and why,not taking into account hero powers ?

“Not taking into account hero powers” is a bit silly but the two token choices are obviously massively superior to all others and the Murloc one has a tiny bit more stats.

Edit: The “Why” should be kinda obvious but naturally because you get more gold selling two Minions than selling one.

Generally speaking, double minions are cool, not too many chances to take early damages, and can be sold to get more value in the early game. So the 2/1 murloc is cool imo.

Yep as mentioned. Best is the murloc that summon a 1/1. It beat / draw all tier 1 minion except the guy who willingly take 2 dmg to himself. And you got more coins for the future. Alley cat close second but lose to a few minions.

Followed by the 2/3 murloc because no other tier 1 minion can win him.

All the above is assumption that your heropower don’t buff your minion.

is the 2/4 demon not better then the 2/3 murloc as demons have a bit better synergy and the minion itself is also stronger?

I think you shouldn’t pick your minions by thinking the synergies you can have in the future, you should always pick what’s best for you and adapt your strategy considering that.
So in the first pick, don’t tell yourself “ok I take demon over murloc because demons have better synergies”. If you have the choice between homonculus (2/4 taunt) a kangoobot, and an alleycat for exemple, you won’t tell yourself “ok I take the bot because mechs are powerfull”, you’ll just take alleycat because it’s better for the early game. Same goes for the homonculus, take him because it’s a good early pick, not because it’s a demon.

If you choose your pick because of its type, you’ll stick to it and be lost if the tavern doesn’t give you good demons, you’ll have a bad early-game, and you’ll have a great disadvantage in the early-late game.

in the long run, none of them stay on your board. Turn 1 is to minimise damage. Have you ever get exact lethaled? imagine turn one you didn’t take that 2 damage. Most minion on your board for the longest are the tier 2 and 3 one. Tier 4 and 5 have alot support that buff/ magnetised etc. Tier one minion except murloc dont really see all the way to the end. what you need is resources hence the extra coin from the murloc and cat and damage minimising.

The best choice is whatever Yogg guides me to.

But more seriosly, if you know what you want to go for t1 then a scaling minion like Micro Machine or Wrath Weaver.
Otherwise token minions are great for selling later.

yes I can see tidecaller being best followed by the aley cat.
But after that I am not sure the 2/3 murloc is better then the 2/4 demon. The 1/1 that grows when you play a demon is probably to slow as you will most likly pass on t2. You then have 2 rolls on t3 to get a demon but I am not sure that is worth it.

i will pick the 1/1 without a blink if i am jaraxus lol. You can always choose not to upgrade at turn 2.

I agree with your general gist 100% but Wrath Weaver and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Micro Machine can certainly feature in winning line-ups.

IMHO:

  1. The 2/4 Taunt Demon (Beats 1/1+1/1 and 2/1+1/1, draws with 2/3 and 2/4)
  2. The 2/3 Murloc (Beats 1/1+1/1 and draws with 2/1+1/1, 2/3 and 2/4)
  3. Any minion that summons another (effectively making that minion cost 2 instead of 3).

2/4 daemon means you’ll receive zero damage for the next two rounds. But 2x murloc (or the spawn two doggy) cards will allow you to ramp quicker by selling the ‘token’ off, allowing you to buy 2 units at 5 mana (or using the extra mana for something else).

Early game doesn’t matter much, prevent as much damage as you can while assembling a strong mid game. The most damage you can take is 3 - or 5 if a amal decides to skip upgrade and get two token units. Weak mid game you’ll get ROFLSTOMPED by 10-20 if you’re not prepared.

I have some other plans at time. Not sure if anyone know but 3 tabby cat give you a higher tier minion. Drafting 4 alley cat give you 2 upper tier minions is very worth it.

nah. Boardspace issues and you will take a lot of damage. It’s a trap except if you have Brann/Khadgar to go for double triple

yea situational. I did that a couple of time when i have 2 alley cat and found 2 in a roll. I just buy one. play it sell the 2/2 golden tabby and buy another 1. Not all the time it works but when it works its VALUE (trump approved).

I go by this order:

  1. IF you’re 100% certain you want to play Demons: 1/1 that gets buffed whenever you play Demons (only do so if you planned to use Demons before you even saw this guy).
  2. IF you play The Curator, Rockpool Hunter for the buff
  3. Murloc Tidehunter for the extra gold
  4. Alley Cat for the extra gold
  5. Vulgar Homunculus to prevent damage (ironic)
  6. Rockpool Hunter (in general) to prevent damage

If I don’t get offered any of that, I don’t really have a plan and I just pick whatever I feel fits best for the situation. Of course, Hero Powers can affect the decision: if I got The Rat King and it buffs Beasts, Dire Wolf Alpha’s a great first pick if I don’t get offered Tidehunter or Cat.

3 tabby cat on the board combine into a golden tabby cat in hand? that I didn’t know.

yes and you get a 2/2 golden tabby cat

Round One: Take a minion that spawns a token.

Round Two: Upgrade Tavern

Round Three: Sell token and buy two level two tavern minions.

That is the optimal first three rounds.
