An interesting post on Reddit, if true. According to a research company HS has converted close to a third of all active players into a paying customer in 2018. When you look at the other Freemium games they compare that to it appears to be quite a conversion rate.
More of an interesting ‘thing’ than a statement about anything in general from my PoV.
Also of note, the firm estimates HS has 12.2 million active subscribers.
The one Nexon game I played was Dominations: an intense, in-depth RTS. It takes real commitment to be F2P in that one but its also educational. Every type of troop/general you get are based on historical troops/leaders. You click on them and it gives you their background which is all fact. So thats pretty neat.
Zynga makes games like Farmville, card games and a chess game. I’m not really into those kind of games.
It really surprises me that HS is making more than Nexon because they have some pretty big mobile titles: counter-strike, titanfall, etc. And I know players definitely spend in Dominations.
Why compare a single game to entire companies? All companies have games better than others (profitably).
@Gwyenth: You don’t like card games? XD
Also, if you like historical fact games, and you haven’t tried it already, play a Civilization game (I recommend Civ V). Loads of info on each civilization, leader, units, buildings, etc.
Also, I agree with MeltedWater: it’s weird to make comparisons between whole companies (Zynga, Rovio) and individual products (Hearthstone). I don’t know how much is trust a research company that makes that kind of basic blunder.
those games are actually free to play. you can play them however u like it would just be a faster progression if u pay.
hearthstone isnt like that. if u wanna go f2p you will only be able to play the cheapest netdecks for a long while. you can forget about playing how u want / homebrew / variance or whatever for a very long time.
It is why the “XXX accounts” has always been a very dodgey number. I don’t know what the firm considered an “active user” but if I was doing the research I would have defined an active player as someone who plays at least once a week.
I’ve always known that, but usually it’s something like 20 to 25 percent of the actual accounts the company boasts. This is 12 percent. Something is really eating into the player base XD. and I think I know which card game it is.
The game is also five years old. It’s entirely possible people whose first CCG was Hearthstone simply got bored and quit the genre altogether. It’s not like everyone who quit WoW went on to play other MMOs.
Nexon is pretty big in east Asian countries. But a horrible greedy company… probably worse than Activision-Blizzard / EA in some aspects.
Anyway back to Hearthstone, … Hearthstone is a financial success, without a doubt. You always have those “hype-chasing” overdramatic Youtubers who claim that Hearthstone and Blizzard are failing hard.
(Activision-)Blizzard is preparing a massive invasion on the mobile market. Maybe Diablo Immortal won’t be the next big thing, but Blizzard knows how to get the money from the gamers.
hs never had 100m unique players lol and they don’t have 12m unique active players now either.
People playing at least once a weak, how many would that be?
1m maybe would be my guess if we would not count the farm bots. Still a big number.
On twitch hs has been dropping badly since the last vegas tournament, though there is also a few big streamers who have been absent like thijs. We have seen similar drops before halveway season.
I am curious how they got their estimates, does anyone know?
30 percent of player base does not = to more money made than those competitors.
Zynga and Rovia have millions and millions more downloads. Most people download something on the app store play it for a couple days then delete. Those few percentage of people that do spend money spend an exorbitant amount though.
