1-2 BG losses and your dead

If you have played battle grounds for more than a couple of hours I’m sure this has heppend to you. You do great in the begining level up quickly and set up to really scaling just to be matched up with some crazy highroll with goodly rng that hits you for 35+ damage and you are gone.

This is the damage problem. You can get hit for more than you entire HP in one round and you can even have that happen when you have the stronger build but you just lost the 50/50 coint flip in the begining. There are specially 3 builds that can do this if the get to go first.
Beasts, priates and elementals with a divine shield double windfury.
The other thing that can cause this is if the last minions left is a gastcoiler/boat and a baron.

That is not fun and I think the problem is that you can get killed in only one or two turns just from bad luck. There are several ways this could be addressed. I don’t know what the best way is but here are some ideas that could make it better.

Increase the health to 60. (One shots would be impossible and 2 30+ damage losses in a row is most likely not only due to bad luck)

Remove the tavern damage. With that change it would be much less likely to get one shot.

Remove damage from minions spawned in combat. This would at least fix the piniata problem and you would not be disapoined for kills in combat.

Everybody starts with one iceblock

Everybody gets to discover a reward where iceblock always is an option during one of the first 4 turns.

Introduce a damage cap. Max 15 damage when 8-4 players, 20 damage when 4 or 3 players and no cap during headsup.

Remove minion damage and set damages only based on tavern level*3

Introduce e new mechanic where if you hit above a certain damage threshold like 20 you only do 20 damage and then instead heal any excess amount.

Have a damage counter that keeps track of the damage all the time. The minimum damage is always done. lets say the opponent is tavern 6 and have only a gastcoiler left. The damage counter would be 12 (6 tavern +6 minion) and you would not take more damage regardless of what spawns when it is killed.

Only do damage from tavern + highest minion

Only do damage from tavern + 1 minion from each tavern tier. That way max damage would instead be 6+6+5+4+3+2+1=27 and a warband with only tier 6 minons would only do 12.

I don’t know what combination of these suggestions would be optimal, but I would like to play without being killed in one unlucky round.

Just happened to me. Sitting at 30 health with 5 players left. Run into lich king who had triple parrot, goldrin and baron. Hit me for 30 damage and that was that.

Just the way the game is.

The problem with BGs compared to any other auto-chess game is that it has absolutely no depth and they do the typical blizzard thing of thinking adding and increasing power is more fun.

I stopped playing BGs when it became apparent that there were very obvious ways to set up wins each game otherwise you had no chance.

Yeah I have suggested something similar in the past… but there is always the Blizzard fanbois ready to defend this inherently FLAWED and broken system. Especially when it comes to token damage. I had a winsteak of 7 yesterday as Jarraxus on - what do you know - Demons. I had the stronger board as well, however the opponent had a golden boat on board, after I killed all the original minions… what do you know, boat pops and drops 3 Dreadcaptains, one Goldgrubber and two of the Windfury pirates… needless to say i got one shot.

People have been complaining about this for so long, I’m amazed by the lack of attempts to fix this. It just ruins player’s experience. Starting the game you know half of the players won’t even be able to “play” the game aka start to build a board that can go somewhere but will just pick the best units they can and end up dying on turn 8/9 because of the “no luck/insane damage sorry bro”.

First of all you will have the automatic win/loose in the early rounds depending on your hero that can lead to way too much damage for such an early stage of the game. You hit tier 3 with 20/25 HP left ? Congrats you will probably die very soon.

Then the game rewards highroll so badly because of the damage calculation. Get a triple and land on the perfect card and you can suddendly deal 25/30+ damage instead of 10 or so.

And finally, the stupidest thing in this mode is that it’s possible to take more damage than your maximum health in a single turn. OTK and autochess don’t belong together. Period.

The way I see it, there is two options (maybe three) to fix this :

  • inscrease the HP to 60 (maybe more)
  • cap the damage by tavern tier (1 = 3 max, 2 = 5, 3 = 7, 4 = 9, 5 = 11 and 6 =13)
  • and finally play another autochess

TFT is a way better made autochess. Yes game are longer but in the end there is always a winner and a looser and in the meantime everybody had a shot at building an actual board while having to face the usual random elements of an autochess.

BG is a incredibly frustrating casino, where luck and poorly thought damages obliterate any chance of having fun on a regular basis. Yeah it’s hearthstone, randomness is their key word but it’s still poorly designed. I played it a lot, gave up a while ago because of those issues, damage being the number 1 on this list. I still like to try it when they release a big patch but only to see those issues are still here ruining the mode. If they finally decide to do something about it, I will probably play it like before but in the meantime just go play something else.

Imho, the only thing they really need to do is make EVERYTHING summoned during combat count as a token, regardless of whether it is an actual token or a boat dropped by a Ghastcoiler. This would solve so much already

Increasing power is fine, cetrainly to extent, but if increase power is signifcant, then older should be brought up atleast soemwhat so isnt night and day differenc betwene egtting the enw/good stuff and old/bad stuff.
