Whilst you are clan-less, and you receive an invitation to join a clan, if you refuse the invitation, you are given a supplementary dialog which asks you if you would like to not receive any further invitations for a week. If you answer Yes to that, you can’t be sent an invitation until the week ends.
However, I believe that if you apply to join a clan (e.g. by talking to the NPC under the Inn in Westmarch which shows all the Shadow clans) and one of that clan’s officers / leader approves it, you will join their clan. Not sure how this works for Adventurers, and you’re stuck if you’re trying to join the Immortals as that’s by invitation only, i.e. you can’t apply to join the Immortals.
