WASD will not be in at launch - Rod Fergusson

Link to the tweet:

This gives me very little faith that they are listening to feedback or willing to iterate on the game based on the feedback they have recieved.

Is there anything they have said “Yeah we heard you and we will be implementing/changing that” to?

EDIT:
This feature takes no time to implement at all. It’s a matter of do they want to or not.

For example the zoom level affects how far we can see so they might have to redesign maps in order to do that. But this doesnt affect anything and the feature is already in the game with controller support. This is why I’m saying that I have little faith for them to implement/change anything based on feedback. Because the community is really unified on this specific point and yet they don’t do it.

I’d rather they focus on making a good game and fixing bugs over adding a control scheme that .02% of players want.

You’ve got that number backwards brother. Also, the control scheme is already in the game with console.

Almost like there have been multiple threads saying they will have a feedback response livestream this month.

Also “Not at launch” can mean almost anything, from a week after launch to never.

Does this mean they’re at least working on it and will release it later like ray tracing? Possibly… at least they’re aware now.

I’d cut them a little slack, it’s always hectic for devs before release, and they’re likely all working long hours already, bugfixing and ensuring everything is in a good state for release.

He hasn’t ruled it out.

WASD is a minor thing on the priority list in my book , try a controller , chances are you’ll never play diablo titles again with keyboard and mouse :man_shrugging:t2: I mean I’ll be happy if they impliment it later on sure , but I’m pretty sure they want to launch in June so they have a short span of time to iron out everything for launch , don’t forget that investors are the ones running the show here .

What is there to work on? And why is he not saying so if that is the case?

So, you expect them to change everything 2 months prior to launch based on feedback? Or, just what you want?

If I was in his shoes I’d want to avoid overpromising things right now too. The response doesn’t rule WASD out it’s just not a top concern right now like ray tracing.

Gameplay first they used to say

Its limited what they can add to the release candidate in less than 2 months left.

Methinks you may be misjudging how easy it is.

Will the UI be updated with additional quality-of-life features before release?

There are some points that can be addressed between Beta and release. Joe Shely said, “the UI will not dramatically change in that period of time, simply because there is not enough time”. Some issues like bugs need a faster transition and others are more complex problems. Joe Shely added, “we want [the UI] to be accessible to [all kinds of] players. […] There are a lot of factors [we need to think about”.

Spoken like someone whose last experience with programming, if they have any at all, was in Middle School.

WASD movement is not related to the UI lol

You clearly show your lack of knowledge then.

I mean, they didn’t really listen to feedback all the way through CB, why would it change? Not only that, it wouldn’t be “fair” to console players if we could do that. Another example of PC getting gimped for Console plebs.

Hooking keys isn’t exactly hard my dude.

Try researching how to make a character move in 8 directions

They actually acknowledged it prior to the beta and said previously they will look into adding it post launch.

Honestly they probably just have too much stuff to grind through for technical staff and testers.
The priority right now will be fixing bugs and testing the game to find more bugs to fix.

Launch has to go as smooth as possible and changing the scope is very risky. They can probably tweak balance numbers without much problem but the technical staff are probably seriously taxed with things to fix.

It’s probably not too hard to implement for them but to add extra features that require testing when your testers are probably all on overtime anyway is probably not a good plan.

The work involved in adding WASD is probably just providing the input an arbitrary equivalent to the controller sticks analog input and providing key binding options and adding an interface to the UI that communicates the option. They’d also have to keep all the UI settings to keyboard and continue to display the mouse rather than controller and check if this system works when combined with dynamically switching between controller and keyboard and mouse input(wouldn’t want players just running in a random direction because a control input gets ‘stuck’ when swapping between inputs). They also probably have to come up with keybindings to replace the already bound keys in the new scheme for the default keys for that scheme and ensure that the new bindings do not try to interfere with the UI in the way they have bound the controller input to apply to the UI.

Seems like the bulk of the work is in testing and setting up the UI to support it.
