WASD - Can we please push for this? Accessibility + More Friends

WASD is a common control scheme for PC players, anyone coming from World of Warcraft, FFXIV, ESO and a host of other games are very familiar with it. Isometric games like Hades even use WASD!

Diablo Immortal itself also on PC has this controller scheme where you can use WASD to path around which I found extremely intuitive and adapted to within genuinely a minute or two.

Clicking is amazing and is a long term staple of the franchise, I’d never want to see that go away! But what I think would be an amazing option that would DRAMATICALLY increase accessibility for people would be if WASD was an option for movement. Just like in Diablo Immortal.

As someone who DOES have a long history with other click games like League of Legends even I myself personally strongly prefer WASD movement.

I would like if we could get this as much feedback / awareness as possible. I really do believe this would genuinely be for the best for the long term health of Diablo 4.

Why this would be an accessibility feature and why it matters

First of all accessibility to players who may have a difficult time with mouse interfaces. Such as if you have carpal tunnel or arthritis the last thing you probably want to do is do a ton of extremely extremely repetitive clicking movements. But even people who may have slower reflexes will struggle immensely.

Letting them engage and play and have fun in the game is something we should all aspire towards.

Second up is simply put the more people that can get involved with a game the better. There are a ton of players of games such as FFXIV or WoW that would love to be involved in this game but we all know those games depend on WASD movement. This is familiar, this is their comfort zone. And so denying them that ability to interface in a familiar similar way WILL put people off of the game. (I have many people I speak with and have commented on this. They aren’t familiar and aren’t wanting to click a mouse to move. It turns them away.)

Let’s talk about reasons why to not want it:

\1. History of the game, it doesn’t exist before.

First of all Diablo Immortal has it, so this isn’t even true.

Accessibility features and the goal to appeal to wider audiences is something games have been working towards improving over years and years. Diablo 3 was launched a decade ago and ever since then the industry has made many strides and learned a lot as a whole. It’s not unreasonable to hope for more accessibility options for those who say do have carpal tunnel, arthritis or maybe they were born with slower reflexes or something similar.

Allowing all people to come in and enjoy would be amazing.

\2. “That it makes the game too easy”

I find this perspective a bit obtuse because if your idea of making a game harder is if a person can click between mobs to path and then click on the same mob to attack it and click around it to path and click on it to attack 5 clicks a second I don’t find that genuine difficulty-- I find that tedious.

Input controls should not be the barrier to entry. It should be the novel content in the game, not becoming overly familiar with your particular mouse brand. Things like the dungeons, the bosses, their mechanics, learning to play your particular class you chose with your particular build loadout should be what adds character depth and difficulty… NOT your choice of interface to interact with the game!

Fantastic post and needs as much exposure as possible.

It’s a standard in development practice and is tragic that it’s not currently implemented in the current game. Not saying the click method shouldn’t exist but options for accessibility allows many people with certain disabilities more range to work with.

The lack of wasd is pretty much my only gripe with the game currently.

Yeah now I’m checking into it even Hades apparently uses WASD… like… that’s another isometric game. I think this would be super healthy.

This is a great post and you’re absolutely right. D4 should add WASD support. It would help to reduce/prevent RSI issues and allow more people to play with their preferred control options. It should be fairly easy to implement as well, considering controller movement already exists. And classic click to move would still be the default control scheme. It would be a win win.

I would love this. I hate using the mouse to move so I use a controller. Would really prefer WASD.

Going to like every single one of these posts that I see, even if it’s as repetitive as clicking in a Diablo game :grinning:

Just plug in a controller…

I’m not opposed to WASD though.

Been pushing here for a long time, pushed as well on your reddit post. Thanks for keeping the good fight going mate~

honestly i would have to agree i would like to be able to bind movement to keyboard keys because it would give more control over my character.

Personally don’t mind WASD for movement, but skill usage and aiming by mouse must remain superior to that of controller.

No problem! I honestly think it would benefit MANY people!

Yes please, my friend and I can’t really do click to move anymore, kills our wrists. We’ve decided that we’d only buy the game if it gets WASD support, so I hope Blizzard sees how many people here in the forum (and elsewhere) are asking for this option.

I completely agree, we need WASD. My fingers are already beginning to hurt with all the endless clicking.

WASD isn’t enough to to fix this game for motor disabled folks like me. In their desire to make this more like Diablo Immortal and to lean into controller-based play, the removal of seemingly ANY auras from the game has effectively rendered me unable to play.

With Diablo 3, I didn’t have the most powerful builds, but I at least had the flexibility to use abilities like Magic Weapon, Familiar and Armor to reduce the button mashing/cycling I’d have to do. I could adjust my builds with my limitations changing day to day, and I was able to enjoy the game. The new ability skill tree and the addition of an evade completely screws me in being able to play this game, and for no solid reason that I can see.

I’ve worked in accessibility for web and native mobile, and it really seems that they have fallen prey to what many in my industry fall prey to: over engineering. I don’t think it’s possible for them to fix this by launch – they’ve gone too far down the rabbit hole.

+1 for WASD or just stop actively blocking simultaneous or hybrid input. (analog stick+mouse like an Azeron or Logi G13)

As someone with minor but persistant carpal tunnel in my mouse hand, no WASD will probably end up being a deal breaker. I can feel it flaring up just after an hour or so of playing the beta.

WASD feels great in a top down PC game like Hades, and despite Diablo IV having a few more ability buttons to bind, I feel there’s still more than enough keyboard space for WASD and all the other bindings you need.

Absolutely agree with this too
I don’t understand why they don’t have wasd at launch. It’s like they’re being over cautious because they think they will upset console players or silly purists?
I literally can’t play this game without it because of my wrists
