It’s pretty well agreed it never did in the first place. It was all smoke and mirrors from Bliz marketing.

Okay then again why could D2 expansion give 2 classes without p2w or any mtx shop? PoE with their 10 acts for free with mtx shop no p2w. Overwatch 2 mtx shop no p2w - new characters for free. But in D4 for 1 new class and companion that I already had for free in season 3 I have to pay.
D2 no mtx shop - 2 classes, 1 act, new items in expansion.
D3 no mtx shop - 1 class, 1 act, new items in expansion.
D4 with mtx shop and battle pass - still 1 class, 1 act, no new items in expansion.
It gets worse with every Diablo.

1.) POE has an entirely different business model. It is a FTP game. Not a B2P game. Irrelevant.
2.) DI is also a FTP game. Irrelevant
3.) You did not get new classes in D2 without paying for the expansion. Same thing with D3 and now D4. VERY relevant. Expect the same in D5 as well.
4.) Overwatch is a crappy first person shooter and not even an ARPG. VERY Irrelevant and I don’t even know why it was brought into the conversation.

I already gave it to you. 
Two completely different business models. If you like free to play games then go play POE. D4 has never been a FTP game and was never advertised as such. If you don’t want to pay for the expansion then don’t. Stick to games like POE and hope there are enough whales buying expensive armor sets to keep the game going while you and the rest of the freeloaders enjoy the ride.

Because back then cash shops weren’t done. Staff size was probably 1/4 of the size of today’s staff. They probably barely made half the salary. Games of today cost in the billions to make. Diablo 2 cost maybe 6-10 million to make. Diablo 4 spent more on marketing alone than that.
Why did a truck cost 30-40k just 4 years ago and cost 60-80k today. Because prices go up.
Stop looking for welfare. 40 bucks for an expansion is fine.

You’re joking right? In PoE you have to buy stash space for multiple different things. They have skin packs that cost upwards of 500 bucks last I looked.
You aren’t playing the game for free. Someone is paying your welfare.

No I don’t have to buy anything in PoE to finish story acts, try every class and access all its content. Stash tabs sure help a lot but still optional.
Well let’s be fair prices over the last 4 years have sky rocketed because of poor government spending and inflation, but for games to be around the same price is a godsend really (for gamers)

That’s because other people are paying for your free ride. If you didn’t buy any stash space you are severely gimped and not really playing the game. I don’t believe you put many hours in that game if you didn’t at least buy that.

But they pay in D4 just the same. Y’all acting like D4 shop and deluxe wings are any different. I wouldn’t be having this conversation in D3 case where there is no shop in game.
That’s the part that always cracks me up when this argument comes up. So many of them bring up the free game aspect but don’t realize there are players spending 100s or even 1000s of dollars on that game. Some are even willing to admit that they spent as much or even more than what they would have spent on the D4 base game just on stash tabs or armor sets.
I always say if you’re cool with that then fine. Ride the whale’s coatails and enjoy the game. But don’t bring up “its free” like some badge of honor. All that comes across to me is “freeloader.”

I don’t need to buy stash space. While I do still think the skins are expensive, I don’t see $500 skins on there.
How many hours you put in d4 over the last year? Are you trying to tell me you haven’t gotten your $50 bucks worth. You are lying if you say no.

There are some outliers, not free but free updates for years now and I’m not sure how they do it, like no man’s sky and 7 days to die

i mean isnt the solution simple? if you prefer poes business model over d4, id go and support them, and stop supporting blizzard.
even if you dont purchase the expansion, you so far have been supporting this business model.
i personally dont see the problem here. The gaming market is big, and from your argumentation it looks like you found a game that perfectly fits your beliefs.

They do it because the whales far more than make up for a box sale. Those skins are ridiculously priced. You are heavily encouraged to buy from cash shop to make experience better. Buying a simple stash space, which all but complete freeloaders will buy, will cost close to same as D4.

Totally agree there, but 7 days to die and no man’s sky were 1 time purchases with no micro transactions or additional forms of payment and been doing free updates for years now, those are the ones I don’t know how they do it
