The Real Problem With Season 8 Bosses

The real problem with season 8 boss revisions wasn’t that they are harder or have immunity phases. It’s that the rewards aren’t worth the increased difficulty.

If they tune the difficulty or improve the reward drops, we should be able to hit that sweet spot where there’s some grind, but it isn’t overwhelming.

iuno. Maybe it could be slightly tuned up i guess.

I would agree that getting GA uniques does take a bit more, but personally i dont consider this to be an issue. Dont get me wrong tho, i wouldnt be mad if blizzard compromised a bit on it tho and tuned it a little up.

As for mythics, drop rates are totally fine.

Mythics don’t need to drop regularly. They should be rare. But after going through a Durial fight on T4, it would be nice to see an Ancestral Unique or two instead of a bunch of uniques that you can get in T1. Rewards should match the difficulty, not be 100% random.

The only boss that seems to drop ancestrals consistently is Belial. Unfortuntely I seemed to need 20 lesser bosses to have 1 go at him.

Maybe at Torment 2, they should only drop ancestral uniques. That would make Torment 1 the entry level boss fight where you might get ANY quality, but you’ll PROBABLY get a 750 unique. In Torment 2-4, you can get any quality of ancestral, but it’ll probably be 1 GA.

Then that turns into:

  1. I got an ancestral. Do I want to keep trying for the correct GA?
  2. I got the correct GA. Do I want to keep trying for 2-4 GA and/or mythic drops?

The real problem is that’s it’s not fun making little or no progression. And that’s pretty much what the boss fights are now. You first grind boss mats and the only thing to show for it is a chance to go do bosses. You then run a bunch of bosses and get a pile of trash. Do that a few times in a row and it’s pretty discouraging.

They need to add some additional form of progression. Yeah, there’s paragon levels but after 200 bosses barely move the bar. They need a reason to do the bosses beyond hoping for gear to drop. That way it isn’t a complete waste of time when you kill 100+ bosses and have zero to show for it.

Do a handful of Duriel fights you may end up with lots of legendary loot. Open a single reknown chest and you may get flooded with 1-4GA items :partying_face:

Yup, the Lair Boss reward doesn’t match its difficulty except for Lilith given out Spark for her first attempt.
As for Mythic drop rate, it’s fine. They just need to be more impactfull and Mythic should be something needed for pushing beyond Pitt 100. Mythic shouldn’t be needed for Pitt 100 if balancing done right.
Lair Bosses should drop more Gold and EXP on kill, too; or at least when we open loot box.
T4 Lair Bosses should drop more 2GAs items.

It’s funny how Seasonal Reputation Cache drops more 2-4 GA items than Lair Bosses.

This entire season is about “lowered expectations”. Boss loot is in the toilet. Gem fragments, herbs, all crafting mats likewise. Even gold has been throttled. Everything is drawn out and tedious to increase “engagement”. Not fun. Not difficulty. But “make players spend more time for less rewards” – seems to be the real seasonal theme.

Some part of it was probably necessary after S6 and even S7. But all slog all the time gets boring. I’m trying to level an alt and realizing I’m either going to have pull the gems out of my main or spend several days farming for gem fragments just to get a couple of Grand diamonds for Resist All in my jewelry.

Last season, even with the Witch gems eating fragments, I had multiple toons with full grand gems by this point. My main isn’t even fully decked out in Grands let alone any of my alts.

I like the idea of a boss climb but, as others have noted, there needs to be hope at the top of that hill otherwise it’s a demotivator which I would think is the opposite of the intent.

not against such ideas - if people can live with the fact that maybe only 1, or 2 items drop from a boss then you know.

Did bosses solo, hardly any GA rolls on uniques. Tried in a group, OMG, the GA were dropping (not everything was GA but i would get at least 2 mostly junk uniques).

If it was up to me bosses would drop a single GA unique and/or several runes rather than fill the screen with garbage uniques, then you would get more uniques dropping playing whatever content and farm bosses for specific uniques/runes. Since it’s not up to me: shrugs

The fun in doing a boss fight is gone once you can crush them easily with no risk of dying. I did 200+ of these on T4, and got 0 mythics. Even if I got one, there is only a 1/4 chance it is even one I’d want to use. Also got 0 of the legendary runes used to craft mythics. I don’t have any desire to do any more of these boss fights. The only reason to do them was to get mythics, and now that has essentially been taken away, there is really no point to the end game anymore. Something can’t take 2 months to do when the season only last 3 months. If I have to do something 500 times over and over again, let’s make it something interesting to do and not a boring as hell boss fight or infernal horde. I much preferred the original nightmare dungeon system where it was really hard to complete them at high tiers at launch. While i’m ranting I really hate challenges like the pit that have a timer, where there is no risk that you die to fail the challenge. The only challenge is to scale your dps high enough to complete it in time.

My real problem with them is that I cant find them on the map, there is that green leaf youre to get to get the ‘elite affixes’ whatever they are called.
No notifications or timers on the map.

If I play it is mostly SP, so online ‘features’ tied to base game mechanics not working render a greater part of the game not unplayable, it is inaccessible. Meaning paid for but not working as paid for. Meaning Im being owed a functioning game. (or whoever paid for the game)

1-2 year ago timers were off, but at least they were showing.

Seasonal green thingies ? The leafs, I encountered them once by stumbling into them on the map but never found them again not once.

No connection issues, meeting butcher then finding out youre to revive at the latest checkpoint.

None of these issues are present on my CD version of D2, D2R in comparison is a downgrade prone to the same. Youre told your game isnt yours unless you login to have them check on you instead of you checking on them, whether they are worthy of investing money in.

These isues arent shared by everybody of course, there is the issue of game availability, same that if you remember, first 2 weeks servers were off. Playing single player, having them check on you, because they presume you to be a wrongdoer unless you let such behavior pass, which is opposite of normal.

You pay they are glad you paid them money.

I repaired the install, I wonder if you can also make sigils higher tier, because I couldnt select the difficulty of that one as well.

If I cant access the later parts of the game, cant even upgrade to torment 2 without long grind, cant get power ups from the green leaves, the season has no meaning regarding the game progression.

If the game actually worked which due to all sorts of data streams it wants instead of it being client-based, I guess the Davey Joneses are some sort of gaslighting tactic, when your game doesnt work, making a bit of an expansion, making that seasonal thing which doesnt work anyway, why would I buy that expansion in the first place.

I did look at the map a bit and it doesnt resemble Act III in D2 by much at all, on horse I would guess youre faster from one end of the map to the other than going in D2 from the docks to Flayer Jungle.

Yes and D2 Retcon classes are also a friendly spit in the face. Nobody asked them to wipe old classes and make weirdo new. But yea, D2LoD still runs better, the CD version that the downgraded fps in the D2R when selecting old style gfx.

I could say I couldnt care less, but that would be untrue, however, looking at the cadres who make the games and political narratives that fill the games out through and through, compared to 20 years ago, there is a visible progress toward regression. So, while D4 if it was working properly on my system, wouldnt be as bad, to play say once a year, when a large part of the game is unattainable, because of technical issues tied to their control mechanicsms over what they deem to be their rights to owning anything at all, after you paid for their game :slight_smile: If they cant provide an online working one, a cartridge like its old consoles that would work offline would be preferable, as long as that one was working.
So, I decided Id try to finish the season stuff for the first time, I never played online D2 since it was a subpar experience vs single player, when players/8 worked and could coop in a single room, things were fine. But if anybody remembers D2 well, even when you played alone on a multiplayer session, you had lag as if you were on the internet, on your own system. That was weird.

So, I decided to do season for the first time ever, well, technicalities came through and my decision to finish the actual late game content is impossible to accompish. Yes, the game is playable with all classes, but it reminds of playing WoW without subscription at lv 20 doing most old content which used to be like lv 70-80.

Technically it is there, just the real late game is not. Maybe the rest of you can enjoy the content and the season etc. Cheers.

The sad thing is I am running bosses right now and the only thing I am looking for is Titan tributes. I’ve given up hope of finding better uniques, I get full bags of 750’s most of the time. Zero hope of getting a Mythic (even less hope of getting one I actually want). Zero hope of a legendary relic. Belial, yeah he’s union and only shows up every 39 days. So little hope of seeing him. So all I got left is Titan tributes so I can farm a bunch more keys and hope for more Titan tributes. The game is so broken right now…

I’ve done a bunch of apparition incursions. I’ve seen & clicked on a total of 5 eyes. I’ve never once seen a “boss.”

A season about Belial where you barely ever get the chance to actually fight him. At least it’s not an expansion about Mephisto where you end up fighting a dog :joy:

The issue of S8 will be the same of S9 and 10 and every after.

The base game has huge issues and they will allways tie into the season.

Bosses are not a Season 8 thing even though season unfolds around it. Bosses are badly itegrated into the game.

Why didn’t they used this “Boss” season to tie them properly into the game. This “go there and summon Boss xy to get item XY” is so bad. SO BAD!!!

I’ve been saying all along they can’t get the challenge to reward ratio right. If having to one shot a boss 3x because his phases are mandatory in T4 is what they consider challenging, then the reward should be better than what you see when you really one shot him in T1. Otherwise it’s tedium for not good reason.
