The Eternal Option

So if you’re tired of the seasonal grind but still want to play D4, eternal might be an option for you. Just a few things to keep in mind if do head to eternal until season 7. Or PTR.

  1. If you’ve finished VoH, you don’t have to replay it. There should be an option on the character select screen allowing you to skip it.
  2. Crunched gear. All gear has been crunched to 540 and labeled legacy. So no tempering or masterworking, but legendary aspects can be changed.
  3. 540 ain’t terrible. The crunched gear will be sufficient to get you to torment 1 where you can replace it.
  4. Check your gear! If it has a red X on it, it will not work at all. Some tempering aspects went away and if the gear has one of these tempers, it will need immediate replacement.
  5. Mythics. Mythics got crunched as well, but are still useful. Weapons will need to be replaced ASAP in torment levels. But armor and jewelry remain potent. Still using a 540 mythic helmet in torment 3 on a druid.
  6. Difficulty select. All eternal characters are level 50 at start and on normal mode. Recommend changing to Penitent immediately for max xp. Shouldn’t take long to open torment.
  7. The obol vendor. Is you best friend for immediate gear replacement at torment 1. He drops legendaries consistently and Ancestrals regularly. Uniques appear regularly as well.
  8. Stash cleaning. Unfortunately, you’ll probably need to break all the legacy gear in there. Also, check for consumables that are no longer used. You can break them for materials or quick cash.
  9. Play multiple characters. You probably have multiple characters chilling in eternal. Swapping between them regularly can help break up the paragon grind monotony.
  10. World events. Population isn’t high right now, so be prepared to do world events solo or with only one or two others. World bosses usually have a crowd. Legions attract a few people. But yellow circle events and helltide maiden summons are usually solo.

Sorry for the wall of text, but that’s been my experience the past few weeks on eternal. See you there or in season 7!

Just to clarify on this. When you select your character after logging in, the option to skip the campaign will be at the bottom of the screen. Hotkey is S by default for KB/M users. I do not know what it is for Controller users.

Eternal is just Seasonal without having to re-level your character from level 1 minus whatever Seasonal Mechanic they add. They will continue to find excuses to purge all previous gear every season, even on Eternal. They will likely even find further excuses to have you partially re-level like they did for the Expansion. Don’t kid yourselves, Eternal gets screwed.

540 GG bis from previous seasons sans a weapon can get you to torment 4. GA’s stay GAs.

I did it on my s5 sorc with no merc.

The issue is the individuals that complain here and elsewhere about “unfair head starts etc” causing them to legacy gear. My 3 GA shako is just as powerful as it always was; I just can’t reroll mw anymore.

Unfair head starts of what? It’s Eternal Realm.

Also not every class/build can take 540s to Tier 4. That being the case must be build specific and not reliant on Weapon Damage or the heavily reduced Affix stats.

You misunderstand, I think it was a stupid move on their part.

The whiners here were supporting it because it was “unfair Eternal players would” hit 60/breeze through the campaign faster than seasonal players.

I got to torment 4 on 2 different builds, I did have good gear, but one was supposedly the “nerfed to the ground” FO/LS/Splintering build.

It’s dumb, stat priorities change and they should have left gear alone for Eternal players.

Eternal will be fine until they nuke the gear again for S7… they will use the seasonal dupes as the reason this time.

I’m not interested in eternal because they keep making their gear legacy. I might as well just start over. If I’m starting from scratch I might as well play seasonal even though it’s lack luster.

One of the biggest advantages to eternal is that you won’t have material shortages. You’ve probably built up a ton over the seasons and from clearing stash. You also get to skip a lot of the leveling process.

But in the end, eternal is just a good place to have fun until they put out new seasonal material.

Yeah its true on eternal you don’t have to worry about materials and gold and such. I don’t really mind getting that stuff all that much. I also enjoy the leveling process. It’s the best part of the game to me. Not that I want it to be. I want there to be good endgame but leveling right now is better.

Its better because I am finding upgrades and get some dopamine. The rest of the game in this season is crap. Can’t find nothing. Can’t progress nothing. S4/S5 were far better. I had a blast those two seasons.

I’m not into this “chase” stuff and “aspirational stuff.” I’m into having fun. There is nothing fun to me about grinding for 40 hours and feeling like I got nowhere. The entire game has turned into aspirational hampster wheel. No carrot. Just keep chasing.

That’s why I’ve been having fun on eternal right now. I’m leveling and regearing a half dozen characters. When I feel like I’m not making progress on one, I swap to another that needs something different. All the while paragon is slowly ticking up, benefiting all characters.

It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s been enjoyable.

Yeah its not really my cup of tea to try and regear and rework an already existing character. I prefer to do it anew. If it were just new gear to hunt thats fine but it isn’t really that situation. Just my preference. No biggie.

I just don’t see the point of playing eternal when they just keep making the gear legacy and the balance changes are so extreme that the build likely is garbage by the next season.

I really hope we’ll see some gear stability for the foreseeable future. Another round of legacy gear would be quite unwelcome. But definitely see where you’re coming from. Building characters from scratch is a lot of fun!

Yes I like the leveling process honestly. I also hope to start seeing some build stability where they just tweak instead of destroy.

Over-simplification but I think it can broadly be stated that (outside of seasonal-only mechanics,) seasonal is for people who like repeating the early game/leveling process, and eternal is for people that like repeating the end game/min-maxing process.

Of course the rampant and constant disruptions to itemization has left eternal in a terrible state with no trust in any sort of stability.

I need to bring up my rouge, necro, druid and sorc to 60 for ptr charcopy. Oh wait, they copied them over 3 weeks ago like usual :stuck_out_tongue:

I would add that on the flip side, the last 3 seasons (including this one) have been lackluster to no mechanic other than a faction board and potion. IMO there has only been one season that I consider and actual season and thats season 2. I didnt play season 3 as I was so disinterested in having a pet with powers. Season 1 was kinda ok. I loved the auto corpse ring for necros.

Im sure they will have buff bots and vendors again.

I know but using done characters saves time

Can I start a thread called the “The PTR Option”? PTRs are by far and away the most fun part of D4.

Builds are giga broken, infinite mats, infinite mythic items. It’s just 1 week of pure joy.
