Proposal for Tempering and Masterwork

Heading into Season 10 soon and Tempering and Masterworking are STILL the WORST EXPERIENCE in this game.

My thoughts on ways to improve this horrible system:

Masterworking Improvements:

Put checkpoints in at Ranks 4 and 8. Allow us to lock in our role if we want to avoid re-rolling from the start every time.

Also, why does it cost the same to re-roll at Rank 4 as it does at Rank 12? Re-roll costs need to be lowered for lower ranks.

Tempering Improvements:

Keeping some of the RNG is fine…but adding a crafting element could be a great way to allow the player to have a little more control with our rolls. And I thought it would be cool to give the Alchemist a little more purpose at the same time, maybe even move tempering over to the Alchemist as well (?). Here is my idea:

Tempering Brew System: Hybrid Crafting/RNG
Craft Tempering Brews using potions, extract, incense, and manuals.
Combined Ingredients will determine:

  1. What affix pool you’re pulling from
  2. Weight/Probability of each affix
  3. The strength range of the roll
  4. Bonuses at a cost

Crafting Mechanics:

  1. Base Manual- You will still need to get manuals for base recipes
  2. Potion (Affix Focus)- Add up to 3 potions to brew the temper and each potion allows the RNG to focus on certain affixes.
  3. Extract (Roll Strength)- Adding Extract to the game which can be collected throughout Sanctuary by fighting enemies, completing pits, undercities, etc. Extract will be stored in your bag where your gem fragments, sparks, herbs, etc. are located. You can then use this Extract at the Alchemist to craft Extract Vials that are a tiered system. The higher the tier the more extract you need to craft it to then use to craft your tempers.
  4. Incense (Ritual Modifiers)- This can be used as a bonus. Think of this as good vs evil. You will get a greater reward during tempering at a cost.
  • Example1: Guaranteed max roll value, but at 2x the resource cost.
  • Example2: Additional 3rd Temper slot unlocked, but one of your other tempers will randomly be reduced to lowest roll (or a main stat will randomly lock not allowing you to touch the stat at the Occultist and/or Mastwork that stat).
  • Exmaple3: Increase rolls by __ rolls, but you can not use a Scroll of Restoration on the temper if you do not get the affix you want.

I also think that there should be specific Potions/Incense used only for Tempering. So they can be found under the Potion/Incense Sections under their own drop down menu: Tempering Potions/Tempering Incense. These can also use Extract resources to make as well.

I really think this keeps with the theme of Diablo pretty well but it is just an idea/concept. I am sure it can be tweaked to be even better.
