PC Crashes to black screen and fans spin up to max. Only in Diablo IV

Well, its been quite a journey so far. My PC keeps crashing to a black screen while playing Diablo IV. The screen goes black and all the fans spin up to full speed, oddly there is still audio playing but nothing else happens until I press the reset button. I have updated drivers, reinstalled the game multiple times, I have tried replacing the PSU and RAM, and while those things needed replacing, it did not budge this issue. Sometimes the game will run for 45mins to an hour then crash and sometimes it will only run for 5 minutes and then crash.

I’ve monitored temperatures and nothing gets above 70C.

Its an older system but should run this game fine. It runs all other games and programs without doing this.

I even have a MUCH older machine that is running Diablo IV without issue.
Can’t seem to replicate this issue outside of Diablo IV on this box. I’m stumped

CPU: Intel i7
GPU: 1080 GTX
RAM: 64GB

I highly suggest you download HWMonitor from CPUID. This will show you your VRAM temps and Hotspot on your GPU. I can about bet that they are MUCH higher. If you cannot see the VRAM memory temps, the Hotspot will be a close second, its usually within 5C of the memory.

And because the GPU is running cooler, its not forcing the fans to run fast enough to cool down the memory and its causing it to thermal shut down.

You can also get MSI Afterburner installed and set up a custom fan curve to run the fans better for increased cooling. You also may want to check for dust buildup.

That, or your PSU is not providing enough stable power or having an issue here. Crashing to black screen and full fans is a GPU shutting down to protect itself. Either from heat or power issues. Make sure you are using two dedicated power cables from PSU to GPU.

I have also experienced this 3 times so far, 2 times today both in town and once during the opening weekend no idea what is the culprit all i know is this also happens only in d4

I’m experiencing the same issue, no issues during first beta or any other games until yesterday and today, rtx 2060

  • Update * Clicking the cog wheel → game settings → modify install → modify install (again) and Unchecking High-Resolution Assets has (so far) fixed the issue for me.

Issue just started today - display goes black and fans ramp up to 100% have to turn off the PC before the game bricks GPU. Played beta and early access with no issues. Checked for any updates to PC, windows, software, GPU everything is up to date even reinstalled GPU drivers.

  • I decided to try some other games to see if I can replicate the issue. The following games run flawlessly despite this issue with D4:
    Star Citizen
    Dying Light 2
    Overwatch 2
    Baldurs Gate 3

Using MSI Afterburner temps never higher than 55 C.

Processor: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-11700KF @ 3.60GHz (16 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

I will reiterate this from my earlier post:

You need to go through your system, check the fans and heatsinks, reseat the card potentially, reseat power cables, make sure everything has plenty of airflow, etc.

Something is not liking the power usage and its shutting down to protect itself.

Did you manage to fix this? I’m having the exact same issue but my audio turns off after a few seconds.

I had over 40 hours before the game never crashed now it crashes within 5mins every single time. I’ve made a post about this but nothing useful has turned up.

Hi, i’ve the exact same issue, did u find a way to fix? Or did u find what cause this? Its ram? Gpu? After 50h+ of diablo i got this problem. And now is extendeed for any other games, i dont care about getting a new ram or gpu or whatever. Im just worried to waste money on components that wont fix the issue

A black screen can simply mean the drivers crashed. I recommend checking your Windows Event Viewer to see what happened around that timeframe.

I now also have the same issue with D4, black screen with audio. No issues with any other program. It only started happening post the patch for me. Nothing specific that triggers it that I can tell, other than being in game. It’s happened when I’m in dungeons, happened in town, happened when nothing is happening on screen. My CPU and GPU temps never go above 50. Essentially the screen goes black and the mouse is unresponsive, the DisplayPort stops being detected but you can still hear the sound effects from the game. Alt-tab or Ctrl-alt-del don’t work. The only way out of it is to hard reset the computer. Prior to this I could have 5+ hour gaming sessions with both D4, WoW, Total War Warhammer 3 and not have any issues at all.

I did run the event viewer, as usual it shows nothing useful other than that the system unexpectedly stopped (6008) and that it restarted without a clean shutdown (41). Both errors were expected because I manually shut the system down.

My system specs are:

Falcon Northwest Talon
13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900K with 280mm liquid cooling
Kingston Fury Beast RGB 64GB (2x32GB) - 6000MHz
LG UtraGear 27GN950 (3840x2160@144Hz)
4083MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (NVIDIA)
Power Supply
Seasonic VERTEX GX 1200 Watt
1863GB KINGSTON SFYRD2000G (SATA-2 (SSD))

My system cost $6k from Falcon Northwest, so I have 20+ pages of stress tests they did on the CPU, GPU, PSU, prior to delivery to me.

I have HDR activated, I play both WoW and D4 in 4k. My Windows 11 power preferences are set to Balanced. I have auto shut off for Windows updates disabled. My NVIDIA drivers are fully up to date. Are there any other drivers I should be updating?

If there’s something causing my GPU to shut down, it’s only D4 that is triggering it, and only recently. I’m just not sure what it is that’s causing it. I’m fairly confident my system should be more than enough to handle D4.

I tried the solution that someone mentioned earlier about disabling the loading of High Resolution Assets, unfortunately it did not solve the problem for me.

Was there some system change that was put through with D4 that could be causing this for me? I’m going to try and reinstall D4 and see if that fixes it. Any other possible solutions from anyone? I would hate for this to be what stops me from playing the game but it is frustrating.

Same issue here. Just started after the patch. Did some updates to my hardware this weekend as well. Thought that could be the problem. However it’s only with D4. Have tried removing the hd assets, reinstalled the game completely. Still get black screen with audio, and have to hard reset the PC. Was happening yesterday in the middle of dungeons or running around town. Now I launch the game and it happens instantly. No temps or usage outside or normal.

I have the same issue with a 3070. Does anyone find the solution? I tried almost everything… is it the GPU or PSU? Only doing that with d4

Same issue here. Constant crashes on my PC to black screen. These only began after the July 7 1.0.4 hotfix. Temperatures seem fine, also rocking a 3070. These crashes only occur in connection with D4.

My drivers are up-to-date, I’ve tried repairing Diablo 4 multiple times, I have done a clean re-install, I’ve disabled high-res assets, etc.

To the extent there is additional information I can provide, I would be happy to do so. It is so disappointing to randomly be unable to play this game. Gave up on hardcore after crashing shortly into loading into a dungeon at 70.

For what it’s worth, the crashes all appear to occur in close proximity to changing zones, whether manually (e.g., right-clicking a zone entrance) or using town portals/waypoints.

Certainly seems to be a NVIDIA driver issue. The screen going black and fans revving up whilst audio is playing is clearly a driver crash that happens when the drivers fail to reinitialize after crashing. It’s seldom nowadays, but it happens.

Monitor your ram usage. If you use ultra textures it’s normal to start out at 90% VRAM “usage” just by starting the game as it allocates it (22.5GB for my GPU just by starting it). But keep watching so it never rises above the allocated amount. If so you have memory leaks and need to try lower settings, reinstalling drivers, rolling back drivers etc.

I have the exact same issue but seemed to fix it. I have a 10k setup and yet I get black screened. So i had to uncheck high-res in modify instal. Then had to cap my FPS to 60 (but anything over is not needed as D4 caps at 60.) turned down all my graphics (which i shouldn’t even have to do.) Finally it’s playable. It’s nothing to do with drivers, everything is up to date. I check daily. I can run RDR2 on max settings with 200fps. SO it comes down to poor optimization on D4’s part. Most likely due to it being a console game as well.

I’m also having this issue! Computer runs fine on everything else. I am however playing MW2 so its definitely on the Blizzard/Activision side of things. My issue started happening right after the last update.

I checked power, made sure my GPU was seated ok and not having issues with being mounted vertical vs horizontal. Cleaned interior, fans, and radiators. Updated all firmware. Tried to roll back firmware. Tried to turn off overclocking. Tried turning up fans speeds. Checked for a loose connection and nothing helps and it just happens randomly with no rhyme or reason.

My pc is a Asus ROG Strixx 790, intel i9 13900k 13th gen, EVGA Supernova gold 1300w power supply, kingston 32gb 6000mhz ram, and an Nvidia 4090.

Computer never exceeds 43°c. Hopefully someone finds a temporary fix until something is figured out.

Well I did a couple of things and it hasn’t crashed for the past 24 hours at least:

  1. Change D4 DLSS settings from DLAA to Ultra High
  2. Change from Windowed Fullscreen to Windowed

These are just suggestions people made on Reddit because there seem to be a lot of folks with Nvidia RTX 4080 and 4090s that can easily run other higher load games but not D4. I don’t think it’s a hardware issue because it only happens with D4 and only since the last patch. Never had an issue with any other game, and never with D4 until the patch to start Season 1.

Particularly after the last D4 patch, I wonder if they pushed through some performance stuff that is causing those of us with higher end cards to have issues with D4. I never had an issue before the last patch. In my specific case, my black screen and fans were happening when the load on the GPU was very low, like in town, or opening inventory, or just moving around in the world.

EDIT: Just had my first black screen and full fans in D4 after 24 hours of no issues. This time it was just after opening the game. I’m now thinking of rolling back my NVIDIA drivers to May 30 when I know I definitely had no problems during the launch and pre-season 1. If it still doesn’t work I will give D4 a break and come back to it after six months or when hopefully things have been fixed, whatever/whoever is causing the issue. It’s not really playable in this state anyway and I don’t want to waste more time getting it to work.

Hey everyone.

Just had the same happen to me but I run an AMD system.

Ryzen 5800
Rx 580

After restart my display would not turn on which makes me believe this is a drivers issue.

Same… Can we get some support on this?

Nah there won’t be any fix, instead Blizzard mods will just come and close the thread as their support is beyond garbage which happened to the vendor issue in the following thread, after over 30k views. They try to silence rather than fix, great great job Blizzard, same old shiz, different day:
