It’s pretty common knowledge that PoE players who have go e through the campaign multiple times have no idea what the story is.
Whereas I personally think most Diablo players could give you a decent rundown of Diablo’s lore.
I watched a small series of PoE lore videos to get ready for tomorrow and holy crap os it a convoluted mess the way it is delivered. Also if you can’t do the hardest content in the game you just flat out can’t even get the endgame story parts.
Also, they literally retire parts of the endgame story. If you didn’t play it when it was current… it’s just gone, overwritten by the current part. There is no phasing to progress you through the endgame timeline.
And before someone says it, a lot of us care about story and lore, even in an ARPG.
Well most people quit Poe because of the storyline,10 years of replaying it was enough. As far as lore goes Johnathan said they just basiclly pull it out of a hat lol. There focus was on game play.
Poe2,yet to be seen, only half the story is in Beta.
The thing with Poe is its filled with lore - but you have to take the time to find it… Its all over the place on Npcs, Walls, Displays, etc but u have to actually read it or listen to it. Its actually a pretty good story overall once u finally get the idea of Wraeclast, lots of corruption, lots of Betrayal, and a lot of Heartbreak.
Sorry but Neyrelle was not better than anything POE has done. Awful writing and terrible expansion.
Overall Diablo series is better than POE on story but not but much and POE admitting they were just winging it. Diablo lore is very complicated and expansive. I dont think most Diablo players could really tell u much about it.
I cant understand the reason to use Neyrelle as a main character - Id have been fine if she died at her moms grave, and they let Lorath be the last Horadrim - maybe mix in a Scene with Tyreal being laid to rest by him ?? Woke Blizzard strikes again with the Feme game - Ie D3 messed up with SheAblo !!
Im not against women heroes or powerful women of diverse background or any of that. Im against awful writing and 50% of your expansion chanting. It was just bad.
Sure, a chick losing her mom and a love story between a demon and an angel is a better story, damn. And btw, nothing actually happens on the expansion. We don’t even have Diablo, lol. But sure matey, it’s better.
One thing I can safely say: the PoE2 early access starting tomorrow will be at launch better than anything D4 was and will ever be.
As someone who has played both and will be playing mostly PoE2 and just popping back here if the season looks fun, I agree. PoE2 is not going to touch Blizzards story. Maybe not necessarily the story itself but the way Blizz presents it. GGG cannot match Blizzard in cutscenes. Thats something Blizz will probably always be king at IMO.
I think Blizz puts a lot of budget into it. GGG puts their budget into gameplay and probably doesn’t have as much budget to begin with.
On the flip side, there are a lot of people that couldn’t care less about story and just want to play. In that case, PoE2 is better because you can just cut right through the stuff. Also, I don’t know how PoE1 is but PoE2 does have some nice voice overs.
Whatever makes you feel better. The three of you still playing this game next week will have plenty of time to discuss it. The rest of us will be playing the game of the year candidate.
Well, PoE’s story was sort of an afterthought, and while not the best actually has some pretty cool lore if you actually read and listen to conversations etc etc.
PoE2 they’ve actually put some effort into it, so it should at the very least be pretty serviceable.
As for D4, I think it’s probably the largest disappointment in a huge pool of them. The Expansion story was so utterly lackluster and poorly written. I’m genuinely confused as to where the effort went into with it. It was basically a filler arc, that had lines that were bordering on ChatGPT/Middleschool type writing. I mean the fact you had 2 “emote” quests alone was a slap in the face, nevermind the fact that 70% of it was pointless escort quests and Snorelle chanting, power of friendship, turn on a dime motives yada yada yada. They dropped the ball.
The story in PoE isn’t really anything to write home about, but they haven’t done a terrific job with Diablo either. I think it’s less about any individual story with Diablo and more about the overarching lore and aesthetic. High Heavens and Burning Hells, timeless imagery of the satanic and divine that’s been burned into the collective psyche of the West across a couple millennia. One might say that’s the same thing as story, but when I think of the story of a game, I’m thinking more in terms of the actual scenario writing, which wasn’t strong in D3 or D4. Not terrible, but not great. D1 and D2 weren’t either, but they had the benefit of being made in a time when nobody was expecting the story to be really profound, when players were often expected to fill in many of the details with their own imagination.
If you said D2, that would have been fine. D4 is pop culture ARPG campaign and lore writing. Garbage and couldn’t care less about it. The BIG thing this franchise had going for it WAS the story, but they’ve botched it since D3 and that’s why I’m going to try PoE.
