I recently came back to D4 after having quit before VoH even came out to find that a great deal had changed. I was able to sort most things out and some friendly players even helped me out with starter ilvl 800 gear (I play on Eternal only) so I was able to put together a build capable of meeting all the Torment 4 requirements, or rather punishments, fairly quickly but I am kinda scratching my head as to why I should even bother with it at all.
I had assumed it would be like Tier 4 from before and so tried to rush to it as quickly as possible but it seems like the only difference is that the bosses just become damage sponges with no real change to loot drops compared to the lower Torment levels. All it does is nuke the grinding efficiency so even if the drop rate is better (something that I am skeptical of because I haven’t experienced it) the fact that things take so much longer to kill more than nullifies it.
I understand now why everyone and their grandma is running the new mythics (Heir of Perdition and Shroud of False Death) and focusing solely on damage multipliers to the exclusion of everything else. Unfortunately, I can’t do that yet because I don’t have the runes to craft either of them or the paragon points to meet the resistances caps without Tyrael’s Might and quite honestly I don’t see the point.
TL;DR: Am I missing something or is Torment 4 a noob trap/only for bragging rights?
P.S. Just how much higher is the drop rate per torment level? I find it rather odd that it’s not mentioned anywhere and it would be kinda hilarious if it’s something silly like 1%.

I mean, it’s relatively easy to get to a point where everything in T4 just gets 1-shot, especially this season (I see you’re on eternal but even without the seasonal powers - T4 can be steamrolled after getting your gear fine-tuned, glyphs leveled, and paragon), so at that point, why play a lower difficulty.
Due to Blizzard’s incapable balancing, some builds likely can’t do T4 efficiently enough, without very min/maxed gear etc. but for the majority of builds, T4 is a joke.
Torment 4: (cut and pasted)
600% more Gold and Experience from monsters
Armor -1000, Resistances -100%
you’ll also enjoy the greatest number of Ancestral drops and the chance to advance even further than before.

the quality doesnt increase - only the amount of loot. If you are faster on t3, or even t2, it makes more sense to stick there.

Torment 4 is viewed as aspirational by Blizzard. Everything you do in torment 4 can be torment 1. T4 is just something you try when you are pushing your build as hard as possible. The only actual rewards are more XP, one more drop from lair bosses, and a higher chance of mythics.

For what it’s worth… I’ve had 4 mythics drop so far in S7.
3 from T1 Varshan.
1 from T4 Varshan.

So your chances of reaching Paragon 300, getting the best mystics for your build, pushing the highest levels of the Pit, outfitting all your Witch gems are maximized by playing Torment 4.
It’s quite simple: play the highest Torment level you can. If you are struggling at a level you should drop down until you can comfortably move up but if you can play in Torment 4 than that is where you should stay.

Edit #2: do you have any sparks and which runes are short for crafting heir and/or shroud or whatever mythical you are aiming for?
Edit: I don’t see how T4 could be a trap. Especially since you are playing in T4 by your own choice. I don’t think that the payoff of rewards to effort is better than T3 but at least 4 is more of a challenge
There no witch gems in eternal, but technically yes. But you can still reach paragon 300 and get mythics by just staying on T1. It will definitely take longer.
You could also do pit this way, but that 1% chance of glyph upgrades won’t hit very often.
So pushing to the highest level you are comfortable with is a good idea.

I think if someone wants to weigh cost benefit that 3 is much more agreeable to casual eternal play.
Eventually you’ll get to the point where T4 will be more time efficient. Paragon progress gets really slow past 270 so as much XP as possible will be ideal. Also, to raise glyphs past a certain point will need T4 pits to have a decent chance of raising them.

You get +1 drop from boss when you go up one torment tiers, ladder boss drop more mats at T4 except Duriel and Andariel which don’t drop mats.
XP gain is higher in T4 for your paragon progression, therefore no point to play other torment if you are capable of T4. The fastest open world farming build is still SB evade, while Necro Blood wave is best for push high Pit Tiers. I can give you some spare runes to craft the two mythics you mention, if you drop your ID in the msg.

No. It’s just there as part of the natural progression for your character. If you can’t (or don’t want to) get there, it really doesn’t matter. Everything is available from Torment 1 onwards, and (with the exception of obducite drops) the rewards are pretty decent on the lower tiers.
Take, for example, your mythic drops. I farmed up a few on T1 and T2 already. Hell, I even got one from some rando normal chest in a NM dungeon. Just play the game however you want.
My advice is to just play wherever tier represents the best balance of efficiency and fun for you and your character. You will naturally move up the tiers as you gain power and dial in your build/gear.
It is neither of those things. It is simply there as an option, if you want to take it. People throw around the word ‘aspirational’ in a cynical way, but that’s exactly what it is, it’s there as something to work towards. You don’t need to do it in a day, a week, or even a month, that is pressure that people put on themselves.

I appreciate that! My tag is the same as my forum username, Archmage #1811, and of course I play a sorc. I am not very original when it comes to naming things, lol! I am starting to get a good chunk of magic and rare runes but the legendary ones are virtually nonexistent.
And to clarify it’s only the tormented bosses that are proving to be a slog, they take too long to kill and sometimes I miss a mechanic and get one shot and have to start over, whereas in T3 they die in seconds. I should really be doing them with other people to pool summoning mats anyway but at the start of a new season the Eternal realm population is kinda sparse so I’ve been primarily playing solo atm. Which is fine because I am still getting used to all the changes and figuring things out for myself. I don’t want to be a burden to others while I am still on the learning curve.
T4 does give better drops but stick to whatever tier you can farm. Killing stuff 10 times faster is always better than the small increase in drops.

Will add you and share the runes after I return home from vacation 4 days later. Sorc still can solo T4 boss with many builds, but take longer time compare to other classes. The strongest sorc build is firebolt but many don’t like to play because the spell casting is clunky unless you use macros. Lightning spear is the second best for sorc if you are not pushing pits. You can invite me to pool mats as sometimes I solo the boss myself to farm veil crystal. Crafting is very costly since S6, you will come to the point Mythic is less important than veil crystal when you want to min max your gears.
You’re not missing something, Torments 2, 3, and 4 are all for bragging rights.

The drops are supposed to be better on T4 but I am not seeing it. Even the experience game does not seem to be better because I kill so fast on T3 that I can gain more exp than T4 HT. Pit or NMDs.
The step up from T3 to T4 may be a little too much with the reduced Resist and armor. I actually thing T3 might be a little to easy and T4 may be OK as is.
I am playing Eternal this season because I find the seasonal content to not be worth leveling a new character.

This discussion is interesting.
The original Diablo had 3 difficulty levels: Normal, Nightmare, and Hell
If there were better rewards by increasing the difficulty, I missed it. We did it just for fun.
Yeah, I know, we also had to walk 6 miles to school, uphill both ways.
Compare number of drops from bosses in each torment level.
