In depth discussion on Blood Surge Necro

Hiya folks. Ive been building Blood Surge all the way so far(lvl 65) and now that things are getting expensive to min-max im looking for some in depth discussions on the build.

Things to talk about:
#1 stat weights(Health vs Int/Willpower/Overpower etc)
#2 Blood-Bathed aspect: The affix that makes Blood Surge cast again at reduced value(how good/bad is this? Do u want this on your weapon or do you want 40% pet sac value on your weapon?) Is this affix actually bad, because the reduced damage wave can and does use your Rathmas Vigor proc?
#3 What are you using as your last skill? Bonestorm/Bloodwave/Ironmaiden/etc all seem relatively useless to me and i have been opting this entire time to have an entire ability slot relegated to nothing(thinking about taking Hemmorage AND Reap instead of a ultimate ability)
#4 1h+offhand vs 2hand(raw damage vs more high value affixes) Ive been running 2h this entire time, but i can theorycraft some good ways to use a 1hand+offhand, but without doing it i cannot say if its better or worse.
#5 anything else you think is relevant to the build that should be discussed.

#1: Overpower damage and health are most important.
Willpower is only useful to reach thresholds for paragon nodes since willpower stack additively with overpower damage rather than multiplicative.
Every other stats doesn’t benefit overpower damage so from that point you want to take anything that boost your base ability damage. That is: weapon damage, core damage, close damage, all damage.
You want a good roll of Vulnerability damage on your weapon because it’s a multiplier for your base ability damage.
Crit damage and Crit chance if you are going sacrifice build by sacrificing the minions that give Crit chance, Crit damage and Overpower damage. (note that overpower damage cannot crit, just the base damage)
Intelligence is fine since it is multiplicative with everything else for the base damage but since you’re going for an overpower build, only bother getting the threshold you need for paragon nodes.

#2: Blood bathed aspect doesn’t reduce the overpower damage, only the base skill damage. Forced overpower from Rathma’s Vigor or 5 stacks of blood surge will overpower both waves of the blood surge when using blood bathed aspect. There is 0 reason not to us that aspect. It should be in a two handed weapon if going for a sacrifice build because you need to deal damage with more than just your overpower damage.

#3: aside from a basic skill, blood surge and blood mist, I go for corpse tendrils for vulnerability, corpse explosion for grim harvest and AoE damage when low on essence, and blood wave for the triple overpower with the legendary aspect to clear a screen.

#4: 1h + off hand doesn’t have higher raw damage. It just gives you an extra aspect compared to a 2 hander but the 2 hander gets double power on one aspect. It also gives you different affixes for a focus if you are focusing on different stats. For blood surge build, two handed scythe is best since you are starved for essences so a slow weapon is better and the life on kill is good to ensure you stay healthy.

What is your opinion on +40% pet sac value on weapon vs 35% reduced damage Blood surge proc on weapon?

My opinion is that it would go on weapon if it wasn’t a utility aspect that can’t be on weapon, so it needs to go on amulet.

It goes on wep at 100% value. Oddly enough.

I’ll need a screenshot proof of that because it’s a utility aspect and utility aspects can’t be placed on weapons.

Its an offensive Aspect. 100% on weps, 50% on jewlery.

70+ Blood Necro here.

Regardless of where you put the aspect (blood nova extra wave one), it doesn’t seem to do enough damage. Sacrifice one might be better. I’ve been upgrading that glyph as well.

Only use I’ve seen for blood wave is convert it to shadow wave and it being played in a shadow build.

Main stats I’ve focused on is overpower and fortify.

I am using Bone Storm because for me Bloodwave seems like a joke at the moment for blood builds. Bone storm can increase the crit rate, and really help the face tank blood nova play style more.

I am curious as to what you are using as your main essence generator?
For me even if I am using hemorrhage it doesn’t do enough and most of the time the after 15 secs of Ratmas Vigor you will not have a blood surge ready and it gets wasted on the essence generator skill.

Main issue as blood build is not having enough essence generation and a strong single target blood skill. Blood lance is so weak it needs a rework imo , also it’s pretty slow clearing dungeons. We are almost immortal and rarely die, but the damage we do as a blood spec lacks … a lot compared to every other class

Well damn, that’s what I get for trusting the wiki telling me it’s a utility aspect.
It goes on the weapon then, sacrifice bonus is by far the best aspect.

I gen essence by: Go in, dump all my essence, and then depending on the situation i either use Bone Prison, Exploding Mist Bloodmist, or weave in Reaps. Ill typically corpse explode while im walking on to my next pack of mobs.
(I like to spacebar into groups and while in the animation of the dash, use Reap to proc +core skill damage and top off some Essence if im not already topped off)
Skills: Corpse Explode/Bloodmist(exploding mist)/Bone Prison/Nothing/Reap+Blood Surge.

I kinda like the idea of going Bonestorm 4th for the crit%, on top of sac crit%/CHD. But at the end of the day, the crit doesnt crit off of overpower damage, it crits off the base damage and then just adds it in to your overpower, so i think when you really break it down crit is relatively useless for us.

Example: Overpowered Blood Surge hits for 30k.
Blood Surge crit without Overpower crits for 3k.
Overpowered Blood Surge crit will hit for 33k.
Not the 50k people would expect it to, because CHD doesn’t stack with Overpower.

Also funny thing

Blood Wave : says it’s a “Physical Damage” skill lulz.
Not sure if this is typo or bug or if it gets increase damage of all blood skill.

I do like the 15% damage reduction on Bone storm too. Has helped me multiple times in high nightmare dungeons with parties.

Also I’ve gone with Decriptify and not Iron Maiden. Might be a personal preference on this one.

I hate the idea of spending precious essence on Decrepify lol.

I think im going to try running Hemmorage AND Reap.
Reap when i need to use a basic ability but dont want to waste my Rathmas Vigor on a Hemmorage, or when theres just a huge pack and 1Reap will generate tons of Essence.
Hemmorage to gen Fortify(because weirdly enough seemingly nothing else in the game generates Fortify well besides Hemmorage.)

84 blood surge necromancer here. Your 2 handed weapon aspect should without question be the crit chance/ crit damage when you use corpse tendrils. I know that overpower does not scale with normal crit damage but it does get the full 120% more damage from this aspect. Could be a bug but it definitely works as of now.

70 blood surge necro, feeling pretty strong all things considered. Few things i’ll add to the discussion.

Considering the nature of overpower happening after X casts, i’ve found attack speed to be very useful. Rapidly dumping and generating essence to churn through overpowers.

The 50%~ attack speed from overpowers (rathma’s chosen) aspect makes a huge difference. Then using the gain 20~ essence when picking up a blood orb at full life, combined with consuming a blood orb has a 30% chance to spawn a blood orb, and corpse explosion for incredibly fast essence generation.

Another 20% attack speed from Reap, and also using tendrils with blood orb generation. Blood-drinker glyph for fast and almost permanent stacks of fortify.

I’m also running the extra attack speed from sacrificing the bone golem, although i’m not certain it’s better than HP.

If a boss fight is stationary, you can actually build up some solid single target DPS with Hewed flesh and Blighted corpse explosion. With all that attack speed you have so many blighted dots churning out infinite corpses for essence generation.

Hoping to find the unique that sends out Bone Spirits when picking up blood orbs to take the build further.

I have built my resource generation around the Starlight Aspect. In most cases, you can cast Blood Surge without interruption.

Hey fam, I’ve been running a Blood Necro to lvl 67 but I am concerned with the Paranormal Blood Surge not working properly. I see no stacks at any time and I clearly don’t overpower every 5th cast. I do have the Surge echoes aspect equipped though. Any clue?

Its overpower every 6 surge. The counter is not on the buff icon but at the left bottom corner of the skill icon.

I’ve used a blood surge build up until level 82, and it was pretty nice in open world activities. However, once I started pushing nightmare dungeons, I hit a brick wall relatively fast. The overpower damage is just too low and too infrequent to justify all the item affixes and paragon nodes you dump into it (I had over 10k hp, 10k fortify, and 1000% overpower damage). I’m really disappointed with the overpower mechanic as it is currently :(.

Switched to bone spear to compare and the difference in damage is absolutely ridiculous.

Guys… unfortunatly you’re all doing it wrong.

lvl 60 hc Blood Surge necro and I got 3 other classes 50+. Necro, only played blood so far, is absolutly blasting. Basicly immortal since lvl 15 and facetanking everything while also deleting everything in seconds.

Two handed weapon for high hit damage, no need for extra wave on weapon since the extra wave is taken for extra dps but also for the triple overpower attack. Focus is on BLOOD ORBS, life, fortify, armor, int, overpower damage, melee stuff and crit.

Skills are Reap for buffs and for aoe, Hemorrhage for single target dps, blood orbs and fortify, Tendrils for aoe CC, Vulnerbality but most importantly for the aspects buff, aswell as Bone Storm, the best fitting ultimate for Blood Surge as its aoe, melee, buffs both damage and defense massivly. But here comes the kicker… Iron Maiden.

I started Iron Maiden after hitting WT3 and oh boy. Everything changed. From being quite nice aoe, okay single target dps if not to tanky or to long alone, but always a tanky boy himself with no fear of death to an absolute monster. Whatever you throw to me, I just delete it. Imagine and I think most of you can, as you will likely be a blood surge player yourself - unlimited Blood Surges as long as new enemies come and that is basicly all the time except for long solo bosses… Now bosses are also currently no matter as I got a big two hander so my Blood Surge + Hemorrhage DPS is fine but here also comes my armor in play. The Artisans unique chest. With my last 3 points in Bone Spirit for extra Spirit sustain, this thing actually helps. Allowing more Surges and extra damage for single target.

I focused on the overpower aspects, bone storm duration as I dont use corpses otherwise and some general stuff mainly defense but dont forget the tendril buff, with bone storm you just perma crit lol and essences on blood orbs.

Passives are probably clear except 3 points in the first shadow buff for movement speed, also a huge reason to try Reap if you’re not already using it.

On the paragon I focus alot on blood orbs and fortitfy aswell as overpower as those are like the mechanic of the blood necro. I nearly completly forgo corpses, its actually just Tendrils and Storm aspect. But I do believe maybe kicking something out and starting to use Corpse Explosion but I dont know, this seems to be a hard strech and there is some paragon stuff also if you got some corpse around you but anyway time will tell. Just try Iron Maiden, the sustain is unbelievable good. The unique Artisan armor is really funny and stylish for a blood necro.

Cheers mates and I hope, I helped a few of you. Stay strong and dont let the people talk you down!
