Game keeps randomly causing my computer to crash and restart

Dang, I too am getting the same issue on my brand new beefy AMD core gaming PC. The random and frequent reboot and crashes during D4 gameplay are stressful and frustrating! My PC has the latest Nvidia graphics driver and Windows updates. I have not installed any other apps so to minimize the cause of the issue.

I tried some basic troubleshooting like adjusting some Windows display settings and D4 graphics settings. The reboot and crashes appear to be happening when I play D4. I will see if the reboot occurs while playing D3 and WoW Dragonflight.

The reboot/crashes while play D4 does not happen on my older and less beafy INTEL core gaming PC. It has a lower model Nvidia graphics card and Windows was upgraded from v10 to v11. This PC has the latest driver and updates.

I wonder ; could the issue be hardware related; AMD vs INTEL. Likely not but I’m bummed and desperate to find a fix for my brand new beefy gaming PC.

This problem started last night for me topo and has recurred four times since then. Initially, I suspected that the issue might be related to my system. I had been playing Cyberpunk (with no issue) for the majority of the afternoon before switching to Diablo IV, where I encountered four crashes. Each time, all three monitors went black, but I could still hear the audio from my YouTube video. Eventually, the PC would restart on its own.

This is ridiculous. I have the same problem here, not even an hour into playing the game and my computer restarts. In the beta version I played for hours and my pc didn’t have any problems. My video card is an RTX 3090ti

same issue. Played since beta with no issues. Now the game crashes and restarts my pc every time at character selection. All this started when battle.net updated and bluescreened my pc. After that the game started restarting my pc at character selection. I have deleted the game and battlenet Re downloaded both and same issue. All my drivers are up to date. I have monitored my temps and usage. 3070/5600x both 50% utilisation and between 50-60 degrees - vram not maxed - no high assets- 1080p capped at 120fps. My pc is under no strees when D4 makes my pc restart. This is an absolute joke and needs addressed by Blizzard

I have this with D2R. intel + nvidia.

After reading a lot of posts here and other places about this issue i though to write here on the solution i found.
For me it seems ramping up the cooling on the graphics card worked and i get no more restarts. I have a RX 6800 XT and the profile on the fans is based on the GPU heat not VRAM. My theory is although the GPU is fine the VRAM gets too hot(just a guess after reading opinions). Also for my particular graphics card i use the bios without OC mode and left it like that but that did not solve the issue until the FAN speed configuration change. Also had to disable windows fast boot for this, since it was resetting my graphics card setup for the fans.
I tried everything else including lowering details and stuff like that and it is making things better but does not fully resolve the issue for me. I do play with a cap at 90 FPS now(for consumption and just do not see the point of anything more especially for this game) and with ultra settings.
With the vents on the GPU starting earlier for my case i have now at 60 degrees the vents at 60 percent they were barely moving at about 20-30 percent before.
For me it seem to be a software of the graphics card problem. Maybe Diablo is just messing with the VRAM too much also but in the end it is there to be used and the graphics card should account for issues like this. I do think just throwing blame on hardware and not trying to find a solution does not help anyone. Maybe if others find solutions like this the problem would be actually resolved for everyone.

Well, this has been something I have noticed even day 1.

I had enabled and configured my card to run the fans a bit more aggressive on day 2 of launch with MSI Afterburner:

https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner/graphics-cards

You can use this to adjust the fan curve for your card. It works on any brand, not just MSI. But some settings are locked out on lower end cards and laptops can be tricky if they have say 1 fan for both CPU and GPU.

Since I set that up, it dropped my temps over 10C across the card. Been running the custom fan profile for over a month now.

You can monitor your card temps with a tool like HWMonitor:

https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/hwmonitor_1.51.exe

Look for VRAM temps (if your card has a monitor for it, it will show here) otherwise you can approximate it by the hotspot temp. Its usually within 5C of the VRAM and yes, the VRAM is typically higher than the hotspot.

I have sorted my issue. I attempted to run userbenchmark just to see if anything wasn’t right and it also restarted my pc. So I opened it up. Re sat the gpu and ram and cleaned all the dust from the psu. Booted back up and I’m able to get in game now with no restarts. User benchmark also runs. Another user solved the issue with a new psu. I had allot of dust in and around my psu so maybe it was overheating and pc was restarting to safeguard. Maybe D4 drawing excessive amounts of power

So I had the same issue of the PC restarting on me with a 5900X and 6900XT (SF750). I tried absolutely everything in this forum and others aswell. Nothing worked.

By pure luck I ended up on a Reddit thread talking about my specific card, Asus 6900XT TUF OC, and how they had these same PC restarts. Apparently this specific card had a very subtle unstable OC where the max boost exceeded the, by Asus, documented max of 2340.

Long story short, I found a VBIOS update from Asus for my card that should improve stability. Installed it and I have now been running D4 for 12 hours continuously with no crash/pc restart.

Figured I would leave a comment here if anybody might find it useful.

Interesting. So it was a hardware issue in your case.

Oyi, the randomness of these problems, eh?

I have the same problem. BSOD randomly in sometimes I don’t even make it past the welcome screen.

same issue with ryzen 7 5800x, rtx 3070, 32 gb, aorus elite x570

As to my new beefy CLX gaming system, I contacted technical support to ask for help to see if the random crash/reboot while playing D4 is related to hardware. I was happy to get a reply and was instructed to download an advanced system tool “WhoCrashed” and use it to analyze my system and send the results to support.

Unfortunately, I’m on a 3-week vacation and won’t be able to do as instructed until I return home. Maybe some of you might want to try the WhoCrashed tool and offer your results on this forum.

I’m still getting this crash/reboot problem on my PC. Is anyone else getting this same issue?

yes i can’t play more than 1 dungeon without the crash. Its so annoying.

This happens to me as well since launch. I don’t know why there is not a formal investigation into this. I created my own thread documenting my issue as well.

I 100% blame this game for frying my 3080TI as well, which I explained in my own post.

No single application can cause hardware failure.
Only direct or indirect voltage changes, as well as tampering with the cooling system, improper configuration and assembly of the PC, or operating the system under inappropriate conditions can cause hardware failure. The game has nothing to do with this.

I’ve been having this issue since I’ve installed Diablo 4 on my brand new pc.
z790
i9 13900k
RTX 4070 ti
64GB 6000Mhz DDR5
NZXT Kraken 240 AiO
Corsair 1000x PSU

While in the old system, a nine years old i7 4790 paired with an RTX2070 Super works flawlessly, never had a crash since launch…

Waiting for something to come up and solve the problem for us…

Edit: A few minutes after I wrote this comment it happened again, I was browsing the skill tree and the pc restarted.

Edit 2: The game seems to crash (no pc restart) when I’m in town doing nothing, happened twice in half an hour.
