Game is unplayable, performance wise

Game runs at a flawless 90-100 fps at max settings, 1440p, no DLSS needed, with DLSS on performance it caps at my monitors refresh rate of 144fps. However the SECOND I enter any type of menu, ANY TYPE, whether it be the map, the skill tree, my inventory, anything, the game instantly starts stuttering, freezing, and moving like molasses when trying to navigate these menus, and will frequently not recover from the freezing if I try switching tabs too fast (crashes). It also occasionally happens during regular gameplay.

Iā€™ve tried EVERY-SINGLE-FIX that Iā€™ve come across, including:

  • set battle.net app to close when launching game
  • turn off hardware acceleration in battle.net app
  • make sure internet connection is set to public
  • turn off DLSS, turn off nvidia reflex in the in-game settings
  • download the high texture assets or whatever the hell they are called
  • I also personally tried lowering the resolution down to 1080p from 1440p, and lowered every single setting to the minimum value, and it did nothing

My specs are:

  • RTX 3060
  • i7-11700
  • 32gb ram
  • game is downloaded on an SSD
  • all drivers up to date

Also every single other game I play on my PC runs flawlessly, this includes other multiplayer games like apex legends, smite, mortal kombat, etc, although I donā€™t play anything else on battle.net app, so not sure if this is a problem with the app itself? Hell Iā€™m even playing the new Lords of the Fallen that everyone is complaining about performance wise, and it runs perfect for me.

I would really like to know if there is anything else I can try to make it work, as I canā€™t possibly play the game like this. Havenā€™t played since midway through season 1, but when I last played, the game ran fine with zero issues, so not sure if this is related to something to do with season 2, or itā€™s something else entirely.

If anyone else has/had this issue and found a fix, please let me know what you did to get it to work properly, thanks.

RTX 3060 only has 8GB vram, that is not enough to support 1440p at max settings. Sounds like you are maxing out on memory when you open more stuff and it isnā€™t recovering from that.

Turn down your texture quality from Ultra to High so it uses less vram and you likely wonā€™t have as many issues.

Iā€™m having the same issue. Seems like Season 1 used to run smootherā€¦
Having a lot of freezes and crashes on Season 2.

Hey, I appreciate the comment and trying to help, but I actually tried this. Hell I even lowered the resolution down to 1080p, turned on DLSS, and turned every single setting to its lowest possible value, and nothing helps, the issue is mostly in the menus and UI, and lower settings or nothing fixes this unfortunately.

I honestly am dumbfounded and have no idea what else to try at this point.

I am still having issues. Removing my mega post.

Itā€™s dumb, butā€¦ if you installed the hi-res textures when you installed the game (they are the 4k textures), uninstall them. For some dumb reason, even if you have your monitor set to a lower resolution the game will still try to cram the 4k textures into your cards vram. I have the same card, and it was the only way i could get the game to stop crashing.

I didnā€™t have them installed and had the issue. A blue post said to try installing them. I did, and nothing changed at all (as far as the freezing/crashing), so itā€™s definitely not related to those for this issue. It might still cause lag but this is something else

Edit: Iā€™m going to try changing the sound settings (it was set to 7.1, studio, and Iā€™m putting it to the above Stereo, Headphones)ā€¦ It might be fruitless, but Iā€™m thinking of all of the Realtek issues going on as well, and how every menu you open makes a little ā€˜shinkā€™ sound effect. A long (loong) time ago POE had performance issues with sound as wellā€¦ I didnā€™t consider it until I was looking through your settings, so now Iā€™m curious.

Will report back in a bit if still experiencing any issues or not.

Edit 2: Previously, I noticed the freezing happen 99% of the time if I tried to open inventory while in the middle of teleporting. After changing the sound settings, I havenā€™t experienced this. Iā€™ve been spamming menus in the middle of fighting and running around without any of the freezing issues at the momentā€¦

However, Iā€™ve been trying to think of other factors and I remembered that there were two other changes I made as well - I closed the Wacom driver window that was open, as well as iCUE (corsairā€™s software).

After reopening iCUE and leaving sound on Stereo, Headphones, within a couple of minutes I froze - twice.

Will close it again and do more testing to see if its just a coincidence or not.

It isnā€™t your setup. The exact same problem here. Season 1 had no performance issues whatsoever for me. This patch dropped and itā€™s stutter/DC city. Especially when I open anything.

Well, after 45 minutes of testing the results areā€¦ disappointing and not too helpful. Somewhat unsurprisingly.

It seems likely that any sort of improvements or not were unrelated to programs and settings I had open/closed. It would work fine, then Iā€™d try to open iCUE again, and itā€™d freezeā€¦ close iCUE, and ā€¦ still freeze. Open iCUE again and seems to be running fineā€¦ So almost certainly just coincidences.

Tested for about 10 minutes each because it has been happening fairly frequently today, not uncommon to happen multiple times within a couple of minutes, especially opening windows (like character screen/inventory).

Whelp, hereā€™s to hoping it gets patched/resolved by tomorrow anyway. I need to hit the hay.

This game doesnt work well in windows mode or if you have anything else open in the background. Do not alt tab if you dont have to.

Yes, yes it isā€¦they took a somewhat broken game & turned it into a dumpster fire. I open skill page = screen lock, open inventory = screen lock, map = screen lock. Also, going from WP to WP can be anywhere from 5s to 45s. Zoning into any open world from town have to tip toe into it = screen lock. I play HC, this is so screwed! Last Epoch on Steam Eff this!!!

I have an older video card and cpu than you. I have it on 1080p - high settings, and it seems mostly fine. My video card only has 4gb of vram.

Last night there was quite a bit of server lag, but settings wise, the game runs fine.

Semi-tangentially related - I ran into an issue where the game kept crashing due to the razer lighting non-sense (but could apply to corsair).

You can disable it, by setting ChromaEffects to 1 in the LocalPrefs file if you suspect it is causing problems.

You can find a more detailed write up here:

I have the same problem. The season 1 game was running smoothly, but in season 2 game freezes very often while opening any game menu, or running fast through the map with a mount. Also, I get a huge lag every time I enter World Boss, Legion, or Tree Whispers zone.
Tried everything on my PC setup - downloaded the newest drivers, lowered in-game graphic settings for high quality to max performance, and changed Nvidia game settings, but nothing helped.
Please help someone find the solution, because it is so annoying to restart the game every time it permanently freezesā€¦

Most of them have 12gb ddr5 and how the hell is 8gb not enough for this zoomed in 2,5d game?

It is after the last few patches.
Iā€™m running everything on max now with my 8GB 2070S, 1440P DLSS quality.
Altough running multiple monitors and streams at the same time can cause some minor stuttering but mostly after teleporting to a major hub.

PS: for some Nvidia Broadcast has caused issues, try turning that off if you have it on.

Ah, I have both Corsair (keyboard) and LG (headset and mouse) chroma and was going to give this a shot, but I already have ā€œperipheral lightingā€ disabled in the in-game settings. I was pretty sure it was the same setting as ā€œDisableChromaEffects "1"ā€ in LocalPrefs, but double checked - and yeah, its already disabled.

Damn. Iā€™m getting desperate for solutions here lol

See if there is any weird activity in that same FenrisDebug file whenver your game is lagging or crashes.

It might give you a hint as to what is going on if you see it throwing errors or failing to initialize or whatnot. That was how I solved my problem.

Another thing you can try looking at is the Windows Firewall settings and adding Diablo to it, if it isnā€™t already there. If you run Anti-Virus software, you can try disabling it temporarily to see if it improves.

Have a literary same experience.

Just with i5 and RTX 3090ā€¦ running only 1920, testing with ulta settings and lowest.
Never had a problem till S2.

Uber annoying at SC, unplayable at HC.

Wait for seasson 2 they said, not what I imagined.

I changed my driver from Nvidia Game Ready to Nvidia Studio, and it seems to be running a lot smoother todayā€¦ Itā€™s not a change Iā€™d recommend for most gamers because itā€™s meant to be very stable - which means it can be a bit ā€œbehindā€ the game ready version and takes a lot longer to get updates.

Hoping this actually does fix things enough to make it playable for meā€¦ Itā€™s frustrating because I was actually starting to have some fun again this season and being optimistic, then got slammed with crashes and freezes on day 3 out of the blue.

I mean, you are being pretty nice in this. The game is unplayable for far more reasons than just performance. They lost me about 3 months back when they decided to make the game un-fun, I would say that is a bigger issue.
