Game freezes for long periods when opening menus and performing certain actions

So finally tried again after a day of downloading, the high res pack seems to have fixed it for me… This is really silly.

Still having this issue as well.
Often the game will freeze, I’ll close out and log back in, open the inventory or paragon menu or whichever caused it to freeze, and it’ll just freeze again. Getting very frustrated.
I’ve had hi-res assets installed since day 1. Uninstalling them and re-installing did not seem to affect the issue.

This is prolly what I’ve seen with ultra textures, try lowering only the textures to high and run with that and see if it resolves it. Did for me completely.

rtx 4070TI here on new fresh computer so plz fix the game ! so many freezes, caracter menu, teleport, show map, and os and every interaction make the freeze/stuttering…

Last 2 times the game froze for me were in town when teleporting from a main campaign special area (once traversing the sand storm, the other now while following the snake in the marsh. The last time I had the bad luck to press tp just when other characters started talking, but the precise moment was at opening the blacksmith menu.

I have a very similar laptop (GF63 Thin 11UD), but with the 3050Ti. Running 11, 32Gb, 1TB NVME.

I have it capped to 60FPS. Never installed the high res packs. Still haven’t.

Now, it does run the laptop hot. These model units only have one fan for the entire cooling system.

Despite that, with the settings I picked, I have been able to play for a couple hours in a session without it doing anything. It will occasionally stumble if I lets say, teleport back to town. But its usually momentary.

Outside of that, plays perfectly fine. Running High settings. Hot spot can hit 90+ C. GPU is cooler. I have not seen it hit thermal limits, but it does hit power limits (peaks at 45W) I do prop it up at the back to allow more airflow, and only play on a hard surface or a laptop cooling pad.

The CPU can sometimes run hotter though, have seen temps of near 100C. 11th gen i5 as well.

But overall, I have no issues with the laptop running this game. If need be I can share my exact settings later.

I use this laptop primarily for work, so its not playing games very often. I was in Ottawa this weekend for family and played on their cable internet without any issues with connectivity at all.

Game on.

Same here. The game freezes when opening menus, EVERY single game session!
Such a poor user experience!

I had the same issue as OP after uninstalling the high res assets. I removed them in the hope that it would stop the occasional little stutter here and there but it absolutely bricked my game.
Also tried a fresh install without them and had the same issue, as well as trying multiple different graphic settings combinations.
I am reinstalling the high res assets now to hopefully get it back to be at least playable on a 4070Ti…

I have the same issue.

It happen mostly when I teleport to town. The game will literally freeze for 2-3 seconds and then become stable again.

It also happen sometime when I open the inventory most often when I’m moving and opening the inventory.

I have pretty much the most recent hardware available on the market.

NVIDIA GTX 1650 SUPER
intel-13500 @ 4.8 GHz
32GB DDR4-3600 RAM
SN850X NVMe

Playing at 1080p.

No Stuttering or Rubber banding/Freeze in any other ARPG or games. Undecember, Diablo III, Wolcen, Path of Exile are only a few that I can name on top of my head that work perfectly fine.

Methods to solve the issues tried are:

Re-installing the games and check for error using bnet apps.

Updated everything, audio drivers, video drivers, windows update you name it.

Tried playing without sounds. Low settings high setting, medium setting, all give same results.

FPS is constant 60 FPS. Latency is constant 50-80 MS.

High-Res installed or not give same results.

I’m really at a loss as to what is causing this.

You are running into that issue of memory assets not being cleared from VRAM fast enough.

Not as bad as some are seeing, but still.

Things to try to help it:

Lower the FPS cap to 60.
Turn off Nvidia Reflex.
Make sure GeForce Experience hasn’t auto-created its own profile for D4. This can override settings sometimes. (It can and will do this. I usually never use the app, I don’t trust it)

You can just uninstall the app if you wish and don’t need or use it.

For some reason today I’m getting a lot of freezes (maybe something to do with advancing through the game), more freezes today than in the whole past week. And if I wait for the game to unfreeze, windows just crashes.

samsung laptop, i5, 8gb ram, intel iris xe max

Same here. I didn’t encounter this issue since beta - until today. I click on a quest item, my game is frozen for 30-ish seconds. I run in game and open main menu, game freezes for 10 seconds.

Terrible experience …

The game runs on stable 60 FPS (locked) for me, on ultra settings. Nvidia reflex is turned off.

Knock it down to High and see if that helps at all. Ultra uses the larger textures, and part of the issue is when the VRAM is full it tends to choke a bit due to how the game is managing assets going into and out of VRAM.

I have the same issue, paid $70 for a game that freezes constantly. Atleast theres an in-game cash shop that rivals that of asian f2p p2w mmos.

As an update to my earlier post, since this seems to happen after the last patch, try this:

Exit Diablo IV and Battlenet. Rename your LocalPrefs file for the game. It can be found in Documents\Diablo IV. This will reset the game to defaults the next time you load up.

You will then be prompted to setup brightness and basic config. Then once you are at the character selection menu, make the following changes to the graphics before loading a game:

  • Set your FPS cap to no higher than 120, but start at 60FPS for now.
  • Turn of Nvidia Reflex.
  • Set graphics to High for now.
  • Set Scaling to 100% (it should be here by default)

Then load your game and see if anything changes.

Pretty annoying, going from traveling on crap WiFi at a hotel in Mississippi, able to play the game on my POS 2014~ HP Omen with an i7-4710H, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and GTX 860M, to at home where I have a 9900K, 32GB DDR4, and GTX 1080 Ti and the game keeps freezing on the character select screen or God forbid I open the menu. The most previous reply in this thread suggested 120 fps cap, I had my monitor (the AW3423DW) set to 175Hz with HDR, so I put it down to 120Hz with HDR.

I uninstalled the high resolution pack, that did not fix the issue. So then I uninstalled the game. Now I am reinstalling the game without the pack on a different SSD. Here’s hoping…

Did you ever try it with the HDR disabled?

I guess I had better. Really disappointing though that I seemingly can’t use something like that, do you work for Blizz? :frowning:

B9442530-1D52-4ABF-A126-BE808AF1CBED (is the Blizzard crash report thing)

Turned off HDR, kept 120Hz, game froze almost immediately on hitting character selection, about 10-15 seconds faster than last time when HDR was still enabled. I guess I’ll try dropping it to 60Hz. Really disappointed that this issue is present. My GPU-Z also does not show my VRAM filling up, either.

Edit: Realized I was failing to update the localpref, so I renamed that. I turned HDR back on, just Mr hopeful, here. Launched the game, got through the initial setup questions, sadly they don’t prompt you for anything like HDR on/off (game is HDR off, on default) and cannot edit FPS caps, either. Got to character select, immediately hit escape, the menu came up, hit options, that menu came up, then it froze and crashed. The crashes reset GPU-Z, so I cannot tell if VRAM is truly being filled or not, but at least Task Manager is showing me my main RAM isn’t filling up, though I realize they are different things.

Going to try now with HDR off and 60 Hz, and rename localpref again.

Okay, tried with 60 Hz and HDR off, game still froze. This time GPU-Z didn’t clear out, I can clearly see VRAM did not max out. So why is the game still crashing? :frowning: Don’t tell me I ALSO need to lower my resolution from 3440x1440, this is absolutely absurd. I just want to play the damned story

Now I am just going to go ahead and install the high res assets since that seemed to work for people and this is a new install. Makes no sense if it fixes it, but whatever.

Edit again: Why is NVidia Reflex enabled by default?! Maybe if it is known to be buggy, it should be disabled. I was able to scroll down a bit and started setting the fps cap to 60 but then the game froze. I saw Reflex was activated. I am going to try to get in again and aim to turn that off right away.

Well, I got to the menu, turned off Reflex, saved changes, then the game froze. Wow.

Wow, it appears the game is working now. I was able to spin my character around and around on the select screen. Went into graphics settings, changed some stuff, saved, no crashes. Going to try increasing other settings like fps now and using HDR. If this is all because of Reflex, Blizzard may want to get in touch with NVidia about it. Figure out what is the problem with it.
