None of the suggested fixes worked for me, but I found something that did.
- Pick up quest (no need to abandon if it’s already active)
- Log out to character select and change difficulty to Tier 1
- Go to the cave entrace.
- Make sure the event “Cull of the wicked” is active. If not, keep logging in and out until you see this particular event.
- Once you get the event, clear it.
- Go to the cave but DO NOT talk to the NPC. Instead, head straight to the barricade. It shouldn’t have a health bar now.
- Leave the barricade, go the NPC and talk to her. She should charge at the barricade.
- If the barricade has health bar, leave the cave, log out and try the previous steps again.
It might not work for everyone, but after relogging for nearly 50+ times, this is what worked for me. It might’ve been just a coincidence, but it’s worth a try.
I can confirm the latency trick worked for me. Have been tryin others methods for days now.
I’ve used a little software called “clumsy” on windows that simulates lag.
once downloaded, tick lag and just leave outbound ticked and use something like 300 ms in delay and hit the start button. You can know that it’s working if you hit ctrl + r on the diablo screen until you see Latency on the bottom left corner
First try, idk maybe they fixed it in a latest patch but hey ! I went straight to the cave there was an event outside which i didn’t care of

It doesn’t work for me, hopefully they will soon fix this bug
EDIT: Lag trick worked for me
Having the same issue as well. No workarounds have helped.
This tool worked for me first try as well! Thanks for sharing.
Seems like a huge race condition ;-).
Thanks all for investigation!
Not sure how instancing works, but I was having the same issue. I left the dungeon and completed the event outside and reset the game, then it worked. I also just ran to the barricade while they were still talking, but don’t see how that would impact anything.
Tried it yesterday a couple of times, still didn’t work.
I just tried the lag tool and got it done on first try.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Clumsy worked like a charm on 300ms latency. So lame, that people have to use such stuff, because Blizzard needs months to fix this core quest.
+1 to this solution. Only one that works consistently, pretty sure all the other random solutions working for different people were pure coincidence (could be they had high latency without the tool).
worked like a charm
a high ping 199ms + (usually i have ~19 - 39ms, EU Server) fixed it with all my 10 chars
(but instead of using a VPN or a external Tool i just send myself some pings via CMD/Terminal)
what i did:
-be near the cave and ignore any event or any other “tip” stated somewhere
-start ping attack via cmd or clumsy
(if you’re using a VPN, guess what, start it prior starting the game )
-enter cave and check the barricade
-if its unattackable/ No HP follow the Quest like intended

This!
Worked for me on the first try.
- Clicked to enter the cave → windows+M to minimze the window and wait some time
- wallhug bottom of the screen and talk to her → windows+M and wait.
- Once I opened the window the battle was ongoing.
What FPS cap when in background do you have set?
Also…why is it always 1 post ppl coming up with new (and seemingly not working) ‘fixes’ for this? (I have not tried this one yet because I’m not playing my rogue for a while).
8 FPS.
Also I set up windowed mode and moved the right side of the window outside the screen (so the barricade is invisible).
I didn’t mention it above because I tried it without minimalization and it didn’t work.
Turned my VPN on to 300ms lag server and it worked first try. The barricade won’t be attackable.

A god among men. I spent 2 hours doing every fix under the sun, every combination, no to avail. (except the co-op fix cuz my friend wasn’t on and got ignored by randoms, so who knows if that would have worked). THIS WORKED FIRST TRY as many claimed amazing. For anyone reading this it was so simple. 2 second download and 5 seconds of hitting the options and turning it off after. I love you
Finally a player without a massive tinfoil hat…!
This should have been pinned as the solution long ago, but mods must be on a permanent holiday
I can confirm that high latency works. I let my VPN lapse, but the post above mentioned the app called “Clumsy” and using that to cause 400ms latency seems to have done the trick. Be logged out, start the lag in the clumsy app, log into the server and then enter the cave. Seems to work like a charm after I tried pretty much every other suggestion.
Latency/VPN trick has also worked for me!
I live in Europe, and my latency is around 30 ms normally. I used Proton VPN on my PC to connect one of the free servers in USA before I started Battle.net. I logged in to the game and my latency was around 220 ms. At first try, the gate was not attackable, and everything went well. Completed the quest without any hickups.
I must say that before this solution, I had also tried every possible so-called fixes suggested here or on Reddit or on Youtube. I spent hours and tried 30+ different times to complete the quest, but they didn’t work at all. I strongly recommend using VPN/Latency trick for all the users reading this very comment
And Blizzard, c’mon, just fix your thing already! This bug has been out since the launch of the game, and you haven’t even acknowledged it yet!
Use a VPN. This actually fixed it for me first try. Try to get around the 300ms~ range; you can check this by hitting CTRL + R twice.
I had to do all of this and fully exit the game right outside of the dungeon on Nightmare Tier then reenter on Adventurer Tier. Idk if the tier thing was a coincidence or not but it worked.
