Error 1016. I have tested connection speeds on the console at around 460 mbps on the download and around 14 mbps on the upload. The console, router, and the network settings have all been reset. This error has been preventing login for about 48 hours now.
I am having the same issue. I’m glad to know it’s not just me. It’s very annoying - I wanted to give the game another shot but I literally can’t get past the splash screen. The interesting thing is that if I boot the game and then switch to another window (chrome, spotify, etc) leaving diablo 4 running in the background, it lets me log in and I get to my character selection screen. If I then switch back to D4, it immediately crashes giving me the error code 300001.
Except, its not the same issue.
Similar maybe. Are you playing on a console ZoinkieZ?
It sounds like from your description you are playing from a PC.
And the error you are describing is the game having a problem establishing a connection. Which is way more likely to have an issue someplace between your system and the internet.
You can use this thread for some troublshooting steps:
-For everyone having connection issues of various types: UPDATE 8-7-23
Sounds like a program is blocking it. Maybe windows defender or anti-virus
I have disabled both. I’m not sure why it would be fine in the background, but crash as soon as it comes to the foreground. I have tried many of the solutions that DTMAce has suggested in his linked thread. I haven’t changed a single setting since it was working a week ago.
Reinstall the bnet client? Try launching via icon?
That is one option. Be sure to restart between.
This won’t work with D4. It requires the launcher to log in. It will not give you a login prompt like D3 did.
Perhaps not, but that doesn’t mean something didn’t change.
D4 is one of the twitchiest games when it comes to requiring internet. Any little thing can set it off.
There have been several updates. One of which involves Windows being able to control peripheral lighting now. Try turning it off in the Windows Settings.
You can also make sure to disable Peripheral Lighting in the game settings.
Since the game won’t launch properly, you can do this manually by editing the LocalPrefs.txt file in: Documents\Diablo IV\
Look for the line in there called “chroma effects” and change it to “0” from “1”
Alternately, you can rename the LocalPrefs file and let Diablo IV create a new file the next time its launched.
There are also some folders for Battlenet you can manually remove:
-Unable to download and install Diablo IV - #4 by Zuvykree
Follow those instructions there for that. And there are further things you can try listed as well.
Blockquote Reinstall the bnet client? Try launching via icon?
I did uninstall and reinstall both the battle net client and diablo 4 tonight. restarted in between.

I tried this as well, no luck. I’ve rolled back my display drivers, tried a different wifi, not sure what else to do.
Oof that’s rough. D4 servers are hosted on Google Cloud. Connect to google ok?
yep. weird update:
I was playing around with the localprefs file and i changed the startup resolution to something other than full screen. I have a 2560x1440p monitor and so I changed it to 1280x720…wouldn’t you know it boots up perfectly in a small window and plays great. If i manipulate the window by dragging to enlarge it close to full screen, i start getting insane amounts of lag
what is going on??? it seems to me like the cause of the connection errors is related to my resolution. in full screen it simply doesn’t even connect?
to the point where if i click maximize, it disconnects.
Sounds like something is crashing it (duh). If you think about it… could be the video overlay display on your card or monitor if you run gsync or whatever. A peripheral program maybe. Stuff like that. It sounds like a display issue if it runs low res. The only time i got tons of 1016s was when my wireless adapter crapped out. Well. It was cheap lol. Just got more speed.
Thus lowering the load on the GPU.
Makes sense in a way. At full screen apparently, its so laggy it drops the connection.
So now its turned into an issue with the game and the graphic card not operating properly.
Interesting though.
As for suggestions:
Does your system have an integrated GPU enabled?
Have you tried updating or rolling back the gaming GPU drivers?
Check the line
Adapter “0”
In the LocalPrefs.txt file.
Also check the VSYNC and that its enabled.
You may want to make sure that the FPS for the GPU driver is matched to your monitor refresh.
I have a 32" Curved 1440p monitor here that has a refresh of 165Hz. So I set the desktop to run at 165FPs.
In game, I set the FPS to 100, since I’m running Ultra, but I also have VSync enabled. (which sounds redundant, but if not enabled it behaves worse)
I don’t know what GPU you have, but I run a 3070Ti here.
I also use DLSS on Quality.
But so far, it runs near solid at 100FPS in most conditions.
