I was in a ‘cave’ dungeon, and it made the dialog voices echo-y to match the cave. Whilst in the cave, I was adjusting the dialog / ambient sound / different volumes. Upon leaving the caves, the voices for ALL dialog were now stuck in the echo-y low tone voice. I can barely hear ANY dialog now. I rebooted the game, rebooted my PC, and reinstalled the game - and it is STILL DOING IT.
Why am I not shocked.

I go into caves and don’t hear the echo.
Lol errr, what?
How do you know there is an echo if you don’t hear it then?
Oh, come on. I know what an echo sounds like.
How do you know it should be echoing…? what are you even saying, or just randomly trolling to get that post count up?
How am I supposed to know if there’s supposed to be an echo? I go into caves. No echo. I’m just stating that I jave a similar oddity woth the sounds, but like in reverse. Are you always this defensive over nothing?
I’m not defensive, I’m asking you a question to gain clarification on your vague and unhelpful post. Now maybe it is helpful, because you’ve clarified wtf you’re talking about now.
Are you always this vague, requiring multiple posts to understand your point? No wonder you have 400+ posts on here.
I made a.one line post claiming that I don’t hear echoes in caves, where any reasonable person might imagine there would be echoes, and you just choose to insult me.
Oh for the love of god, get a grip - just stop commenting on my post then if you’re oh-so-insulted. Your breed of human gives me migraines, just go.
I’m experiencing this issue too but it was present from the very start of the game. All dialog is extremely muffled and echoey besides during cutscenes or dialog options that progress the quest. Did you find a fix?
I have this exact same Issue.
Where Cinematic and Quest Dialogue are completely fine but the in game Character Volume is barely hearable at all and echo-y.
Even when putting everything to 0 in the Sound settings but the dialogue option, same thing. Nothing seems to work.
Hey guys @SellTheWold + @Varis,
So mine fixed itself randomly the next day, however, my ticket had a reply today from Friday, so I figured I’d share this info with you so you can fix yours too:
Game Master Ixzal here and sorry about these strange audio issues in Diablo 4. Based on what you described, those settings you changed may be causing an issue. Reinstalling the game may not have changed the settings as those would be stored in a separate file in the Documents folder. You can try clicking the cogwheel in the Blizzard app and reset the game options to set it back to default. Otherwise, deleting that D4 folder in the Documents should force a reset.
If this persists, we should try testing the game with no other programs running. To do this, let’s disable all startup programs and then restart the computer:
If everything is sorted out, it would be super appreciated if you could resolve the issue on our support site and let us know:
https://battle.net/support/case/
Of course, if you need any additional assistance please reach back out and we’ll continue to work with you. Make sure to include new system files:
Best wishes!

Unfortunately this didn’t fix it for me. I completely deleted the diablo 4 file in the documents folder and still no luck. I tried launching the game in safe mode, clean re-installing all audio drivers, deleting the game and the config files in documents, and verifying game files in the battle.net launcher. It seems to me that the issue is server side and stored in the diablo 4 servers. I can verify this because I deleted every trace of diablo 4 off of my pc and the issue still persists. I also noticed that the options for color highlights persisted after reinstall of the game, so the file associated must be stored in the servers. Thank you for your response though @Novares.
Jesus! I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you, that’s extremely frustrating. How long has it been happening? Luckily for me, the next day or so it was randomly gone. I was shocked. Nonetheless, it’s absurd
It has been happened from the very beginning. The very first thing I do when starting a game is tweaking all of the settings. When the game starts you are standing in a cave. I didn’t take a single step and went straigt into tweaking everything to my liking. When I approached the first village i thought it was just a strange choice in audio due to the storm. When i got to the first city it was sill present. Now im level 19 and it’s still happening. This is over the course of 3 days playing off and on, even tried making different characters. During all general dialog i have to stop what im doing and devert my attention to reading the subtitles its pretty annoying and taking away from the experience as a whole.
Maybe submit a support ticket. Reference this thread, and say you tried all of the things the Game Master suggested from my -exact same- issue, and then submit necessary files they may require and hopefully you can skip some of the back and forth.
I’m trying to create a ticket but it keeps directing me to the forum to report the bug like I already did. Any tips?
Yeah, after going to Blizzard Entertainment
When you’re filling out ticket, click Account → Not Listed Here as category, should let you submit contact
