Nah, it’s justified. There are too many fundamental issues that haven’t been addressed, even after an entire year, and its endgame is turning into D3 all over again. Good ARPGs have been built on D2’s foundation since 2001, and will be built on PoE 2’s foundation from 2025 onward.
D3 sucked because it failed to iterate on what D2 was, giving us a strictly inferior product. D4 is more or less D3 with better graphics now, and it kind of looks like soup once the speed picks up. Lack of enemy, boss, and biome diversity aren’t doing it any favours.
Once you play it enough and apply your understanding of the genre as a whole to it, you’ll come to realize, as I have, all these new systems only serve to magnify the breadth of the endgame, but not the depth. If anything, it’s lost depth.
There have been numerous movements in the right direction, but there are still too many problems. These are inexcusable given what PoE 1 and 2, which are far and away the best ARPGs on the market, are doing.
-
Boss rotas are mandatory. Nobody with an IQ higher than their BMI will ever do a boss solo, on account of effectively cutting their loot by 3/4.
-
The loot chase is getting handed most of your BiS gear for free, then chasing the same loot with higher stats.
-
Progression is doing the same content with higher stats.
-
D4’s only ““pinnacle”” boss is a tutorial on how not do design a good boss fight.
-
A third of D4’s bosses are Tomb Lord. Who cares if there’s 150 dungeons when they only have a half-dozen bosses between them?
-
No map overlay, which is a genre-standard feature since 1996.
-
No in-game market whatsoever, and no official website/API to facilitate trading.
-
No loot filters.
-
Lazily implemented WASD controls.
-
Exponentially more bugs and entirely dysfunctional systems after an expansion than PoE 2 had on day 1 of its beta.
-
The dev team takes 3-6 months to fix simple issues such as resistances, implementing a gem tab, etc.
-
Seasons with less content than a 2014 PoE 1 league, despite having 2 full development teams working on seasons, plus another development team devoted to live service.
-
Copy/pasting other ARPGs’ systems without understanding their merits and drawbacks (e.g. PoE 1’s labyrinth traps → release day S3 Vaults, Last Epoch’s crafting system → bricking your items with Tempering).
-
Going from “damage on Tuesdays” to itemization so vapid it’s comparable to D3’s.
-
Erasure of white, blue, and yellow items (3 of 5 rarities) due to lacking the intellect to make them interesting and worthwhile.
I could go on, but you get the idea.
