Diablo 4: Fun vs. Complaints - Why Do Players Stay?

Introduction:
In the vibrant world of Diablo 4, we’ve noticed a curious phenomenon: some players consistently complain about the game’s lack of fun, yet they remain engaged. Let’s delve into this intriguing behavior.

Discussion Points:

  1. The Paradox of Staying : Why do players who find the game less enjoyable continue to invest time in it? Is there something beyond mere gameplay that keeps them hooked?
  2. The Art of Complaining : Is the act of complaining itself a form of engagement? Do players derive satisfaction from venting frustrations, even if they’re still playing?
  3. Excessive Play and Discontent : Are these players caught in a cycle of excessive play, leading to dissatisfaction? How does this impact their overall gaming experience?
  4. Alternative Pleasures : Why don’t they seek out other games that align better with their preferences? What makes Diablo 4’s allure irresistible despite perceived flaws?

Conclusion: - Let’s hear from the community! Share your thoughts on why some players persistently complain while remaining committed to Diablo 4. Is it the thrill of the hunt, the camaraderie, or something else entirely?

Do we actually have any data, which shows that those who are complaining, are generally still engaged in the game? Otherwise it seems like quite an assumption.

Now, some are probably still engaged, for all kinds of reasons.
Like some of the people who are currently complaining about Tempering Limit, might stick it out for a bit. Makes sense that complaining starts before disengagement.
Nor is it black&white. What if they find 50% engaging and 50% bad?

If the question is “why would a player continue playing while not deriving enjoyment?” then it sounds an awful lot like an addiction.

If they don’t play then how do they know what to complain about?
If they don’t play then why are the even complaining about the game?

For me personally, this game was never fun, but to judge any ARPG you should put time in it. At least 500+ hours. I think i put something like this in D4, not sure tho. Why it is not fun for me? Well honestly cuz of D3 core mechanics and D3 end game loop. But this game is a live-service so it could evolve into smthing decent and they advertized it as a successor of D1/D2, D3 was never mentioned (it was lies btw for you to buy it, but at the end of the day who cares?).
I personally play now only PoE and PD2(which are awesome d2 mod and i strongly recommend anyone to try it) so i have some time for D4 too.

I would like this game to be good, but it seems to me that the chances of this are minimal. I will most likely play it periodically, just as I played d3 (for me, d3 never became a good game, unfortunately) with the hope that something will happen to it and it will get better.

Well tbf, there are some solutions that I liked, such as almost full open trading, this will benefit a game a lot, so not everything is definitely bad.

So i have a hope that someday i’ll see D4 that i would enjoy, but realistically chances for that are almost 0.

And there is a thing, that you should understand. Most of D1/D2 fans already left, this game now is completly crowded by D3 fanbois and they were minority at the release. So i think that majority of today playerbase came from D3 and expect this game to be a D3 2.0 which in fact it is.

Some years ago, humanity took a sharp turn toward the hellscape that has since become known as The Internet. It allows everyone to talk about stuff they have no idea about.
You should not try it at home!

One reason could be to tell the developers of the game, what would make them play the game.

Leaving aside the hypocrites and liars who say they are going to leave and don’t leave: There is a very simple explanation.

It’s because the good outweighs the bad. Nothing is perfect. All games have problems, and you still play them.

Now, just because the good is better than the bad doesn’t mean that the bad stops being bad. That’s when the sincere complaints appear. You want the game you like to be even better.

Don’t blame the players, blame Blizz for misdirection of their customers

They promised us meat, potatoes and BBQ sauce, but produced lots of potatoes and excess of BBQ sauce with barely half the promised meat amount

Then “new” customers came in and said this “borsch” has too much meat in it, and it’s too greasy, reduce meat, and add more water

Then people proceed to ask for more meat (as promised), potatoes and salt (cause too much “wattery” now)… AND, the argument of “go do something else” sound like a “go eat cake”

No ofense, but it’s not a fault of those that complain, they got promised one thing and “new round of customers” that went in after desired and ordered a totally different menu

And EVEN NOW those that still want their order as promised are open to compromises (ok, we get it, but pls give us some smaller portions and don’t close the lid so we can add our own extra meat at times)

But what happens instead is the “borsch” is not only served at the spot but even opened for widespread delivery service now

I liek the monsters, artwork, music and feel of the grim dark world.

I wasnt misdirected. I knew exactly what I was getting based on all the reviews, videos, and widely available info. How could someone not know what they were getting unless they are some kind of mouth breather that cant think for themselves?

OK, let’s analyze it a bit

“Open weekend” BETA, everyone amazed, impressions almost perfect, e.t.c., game rating almost (if not totally) record-breaking at 9.3

5 weeks later, the game’s rating was (obviously review bombed but still) 1.4

Did your Solomonic Wisdom or Nostradamus prediction capabilities foresee that also ?

diablo still has the best arpg atmosphere tho

I think it is unfair to judge a game without experiencing most of it. If I quit after the first pain point then I can not judge anything after. It’s like PoE’s campaign. As a vet, sure I hate it but the rest of the game is so good I don’t mind doing it every season reset.

Meanwhile, once I hit 30 in D4 the game feels the same for all 70 levels after that. It’s just a mindless thoughtless RNG fest with little to no player agency from there on out. Drops are balanced around trade but we do not have a good trade system. FFS, you must add people to a friend list to trade with them. Meanwhile, RMT is running rampant because they made unique and legendaries tradeable. Why trade for a reasonable amount of gold when you can get $25 per single GA item?

So now botters will buy up all the good bases from the guides and horde them to RMT. Or flip to get enough gold to again RMT. Trading is just a nonstarter in a more casual game unless every single step is tuned around it and the player receives more agency than just “waiting for a good drop”. If it had PoEs or Last Epoch’s crafting system, I would not care as much.

So is unfair to judge people’s complaints based on valid cause

Exactly. Only you know what ?, it would’ve required about 10x less effort to fix this problem instead of add a whole new slew of content for after lvl 100 (AND almost if not literally kill the original 30 levels in that process also)

While the player reaction was wild, Subdrivers clock is somewhat right for once.
The overall state of the game was public information months before release.
The Blog posts Blizzard released, had gotten worse and worse over the previous 2 years. Features getting removed, or dumbed down, again and again.
Newspapers were publishing articles about how Blizzard were desperately rushing the game to release.
The state of the game should not be a surprise for anyone following the game.
On the flipside, it shouldn’t exactly be needed to follow the game closely either.

And sadly, it also isn’t much of a surprise that the game is going Full Diablo 3 after launch.

It is really disappointing however.

Nothing wrong with following the forums,i dont have much to say just reading.I won’t play untill after the expansion,semi-retire not much else to do atm.

If not having fun don’t people just go play something else?

Just Curious is all,not many games im into atm

Unfortunatelly Open weekend Beta was a trick from the beginning. And there were a lot of things like this.

Well this is indirect evidence.

honestly minde did.

I was complain since the beta. The moment i found my first items and realised i will have to compare items with stats like +3% basic Atk dmg vs + 5% Dmg against close enemies while having “lv” bound items was the pinnacle of bad game design.

There is no difference in a broadword, longsword, falchion or any other 1 handed blade. There literaly only exists 1 sword in the game with different skins and you get Stats that are so miniscule in impact that you could total forget even to think about it.

It’s a miracle to me that this obvious flaw flew by so many.
