Dark Citadel - No solo

Wowhead interview Diablo IV Team!

So, it’s not possible to go into the Dark Citadel as a solo player, correct?

Yes, that’s correct, you have to have at least two players.

It is unbelievable coz you decided to ignore solo players, solo is more exciting than to join any group for me. Diablo IV Team still dont get it, dont understand what we want, ignore feedback and you can see majority want solo.

If you want to make this game fun then make sure to happen it! It continues with full of complains and you still dont give us what we want? You will see more complains when Vessel of Hatred is out and I can promise you!

The question is: What is the problem who you cant understand anything of this diablo game?

Thank you!

It’s okay to have some content that is a bit different. But I do understand the frustration, especially since they have decided to lock the scrolls of retempering and some cosmetics behind this mode. I’ll give it some time, and actually play it before I judge it.

please do not use WE.

you don’t represent us.

I wished it would have been more solo friendly, but the rest of the game is already solo friendly (though, not efficient) so adding one game mode that is group-only isn’t quite terrible.

This feels like dejavu, as if hundreds of posts about this same topic have been made before this… nah I must be imagining things. This has to be the first post on this topic.

While I agree it’s pretty crappy this isn’t soloable. Having one of the biggest hyped areas in the game inaccessible to everyone has kinda taken the excitement out of the expansion for me. I’ll still play it and see how the rest of it is. I wasn’t excited about mercs either so this may the last season for a while for me.

But where I’m not sure I agree is are we solo only.pkauers the majority? I think the majority play solo because finding groups sucks but with a group finder will they all jump onboard?

I think us ssf players may actually be a loud minority. Which may mean this game is not for us going forward.

I’d say probably most people solo because they want to solo. There are some that would group that probably just don’t because no social features yet. Then there are some that probably don’t group because grouping in solo content is too easy and boring.

Afaik every single dev who have ever talked about solo vs. multiplayer in A-RPGs have said that the majority played solo.
Which tbh is not surprising. Same for all kinds of other genres afaik.

Not that it matters what the split is.
Like 1-5% plays HC, but it is still super nice that the option is there. Whenever an A-RPG releases without HC, it feels like an essential feature is missing imo.
The game should likewise support both solo and grouping for those who want either. Doesn’t matter if only 10% were playing in groups.

More than 80% of the player base plays solo. Blizz told us this in the last campfire chat.

They already have a game, made for solo players, when it’s more beneficial to group up.

Now, less than 20% of the players get a group finder and group only content. It wouldn’t be so bad if solo players could do it, just with difficulty, but we can’t even enter.

That right there is bad for so many reasons, but the biggest is one the fact that they’ve literally gone completely against the 80/20 rule.

Generally, you want anything you do be available/positive for 80% or more of your audience.

The only possible way I can see that they think this fits, is that more than 80% of the player base can now play multiplayer too.

The thing is, those people don’t WANT to play multiplayer. They’re tone deaf on this issue.

They aren’t going to change it, and it sounds like a few things are citadel only, which also goes against their policy of you can do and get everything playing solo.

This will be a major flop (of a feature). Here’s hoping that the rest of VoH is a success, and that people just forget that the citadel exists. Nobody asked for raid content in Diablo anyway, who the hell did they think they were targetted for this?

I wonder how the citadel will be for hardcore players. Will it be fairly manageable or nigh impossible (like wow raids where you’re kinda expected to die countless times to progression, which obviously is a non-starter in hardcore).

Just remember though, its something they want to try in this mode, doesn’t mean solo players are being ignored, we have IH as a core, hopefully breaches too, i would enjoy that as a whisper bounty variety, needs to scale a bit higher though and maybe a boss rotation, but still better than nothing even as is.

And we don’t know what else is coming , pretty sure they brush over something that will be for solo players, after IH, so even though i hope Citadel does get opened up to the solo player, i don’t care about team mechanics myself, so a solo version loaded is possible, don’t need to make AI for mercs, just make it like the same, minus team sync mechanics.

But if they don’t i still have plenty to play and it means nothing beyond that. I have solo played many of these games, sometimes it’s a shame to miss out and sometimes it’s made me stop playing the game, i don’t think D4 will ice out solo players so much that it will become that, it’s really would be a bad move. I don’t like it in immortal and i don’t like it here, so i am not a fan, and i think its okay to have raid mechanics for teams. But! you should offer the same mode for solo in a arpg like diablo. that imo, was a mistake not to do this, especially with something so cool and interesting, and a new environment.

Game isn’t for you I guess. Try Skyrim. You won’t ever have to worry about seeing another player!

It’s not “a little” different. It is completely opposite to the concept of playing alone.

And this type of opposite content should never be mandatory.

IMPORTANT: We do not know if it is mandatory, and mandatory has different definitions depending on each person.

PVP (for example) is also an “opposite content” and is not mandatory by the definition of the vast majority of players.

If Dark Citadel is like PVP, almost no one will have a problem with it existing.
(Yes, it has these poorly designed scrolls, but they can be obtained outside the Citadel.)

I don’t understand why they can’t have two versions, solo and group.
The solo version would simply be able to be conquered solo for say less rewards/less drop chance and the group version would be identical to solo but harder, would need more players to conquer but also better drop chance on everything.

They want players to experience playing in a group.
And they are probably looking to measure the impact of such an activity.

Every time I see someone whining about Citadel being for groups only… I think… it must be tough to voluntarily omit yourself from potentially fun content based on some weird ideology that you must play an ARPG alone… and then cry about missing out on an item you’ve never experienced up to this point… and pretend that it’s game-breaking for you…
weird…

I have a better idea: Try Diablo 1, Diablo 2, or Diablo 3.

And… haven’t you thought that some of us have simply already tried it in other games and we don’t like it?

Personally, I loved the idea of a Diablo MMO in the past… until I tried WoW.

Currently I would say the solo crowd is the largest in the game based off what the developers have said. Now this could easily change with the new party finder coming.

One of the biggest draws to group play in D2 and D3 was the ease of getting into groups. I would say D4’s method is going to be more akin to PoE honestly. I couldn’t tell you how grouping was in PoE though as I always played solo over there myself. However the method of finding a group is going to be very similar.

So we’ll just have to see how it turns out. I’m all for more group play mind you, and the tools to make it easier. I’m just obviously against mandatory group play. It’s fine for certain games, I just feel it’s a mistake in a Diablo game.

I’ll give it a try of course. I have a feeling I’ll actually enjoy the dungeons themselves, just not the fact I have to always go in with a group is all.
