ya it did a lot but let’s not let nostalgia blind us, D2 had a ton of issues even at launch but got better as time went on. Ya it was great but let’s not put it on a pedestal as today it doesn’t stand up and is hot garbage. Back then it had 0 competition, literally.
Necro was actually useless for a shocking amount of time (about 8 years I believe) until the synergy system came into play the Necro’s bone skills only did 500 damage max and that was with Bone Spirit.
We talk economy a lot, this was due to D2’s being actually busted. There was a time in it’s life span where if you had perfect gems you were rich and could get anything and then one patch later you were poor as Perfect Gems lost tons of value as runewords came out. Great gear that could take you through Hell difficulty was literally viewed as actual garbage by the rich. There was also a motto that was shocking true which was “The rich got richer, the poor got poorer.”
Many game mechanics were actually useless. Crafting had few uses and crafting weapons yielded no results as the weapons were always going to be beyond bad. Outside of the cow level and full rejuvenation potions crafting was worthless
No respec for majority of it’s lifespan hurt the game badly. Even coming into the mid and late 2000’s not adding a respec option was actually a poor move, forcing you to actually start over if you made a bad build.
Leveling sucked. Leveling past 70 was a chore and a literal full time job. Leveling past 90 the levels could take a literal real life week to accomplish. If you played the game 24/7 you could do it in a few days. Death also would take away your entire experience bar, thus rendering your time actually wasted.
Dungeons were way to big, especially on Hell difficulty. I remember one dungeon in particular took me several hours to actually navigate due to it’s sheer size.
Useless skills. So many had no actual no point. This was somewhat alleviated with the Synergy system however
Maybe if you are stuck in a time warp. D2 was an amazing game for its era and remains a great game but….if you put it up against modern games the player base isn’t exactly making me believe it’s on par with what is out there now.
PoE is actually the gold standard now. D2/D2R is just way too easy of a game. Almost never fear of death unless you run a Barb and try to intentionally gimp yourself. PoE has the flavor with a modern twist. Yes it is super fast at the endgame and the devs did have their hand in that, but when they try to pull it a bit back people rage out. Maybe PoE 2 will slow it down a bit without people losing their minds.
D2r would of been a GREAT rerelease. If it did not listen to these forums. Too many d2 purists who were 5 years old when d2 came out and see everything through rose colored glasses and have no real idea about d2.
D2 even back then the players wanted CONTENT and change. The single time we actually got that d2 exploded. And that was LoD/1.10. And we had purists back then too that said that pre LoD was better but they were FULL of it. The game just quit doing anything for nearly 20 years. Then when d2r released they made 2 major mistakes. 1 was cross save. Every real D2 players dream was the play a D2 free of bots and cheats. And that is what we would of had on consoles without cross save. And the 2nd was season 1 because like D4 it was a full of garbage slap in the face. By the time you got some real change in season 2 it was too little too late,
The 3x3 horadric cube being your effective inventory and the way item loss on death works makes the game pretty garbage actually, nvm stuff like the potion system. Borderline unplayable and it feels bad to play. Literally a looter ARPG where the most effective way to play is not picking up any loot because of how much it breaks up the flow all the time if you were to do so.
D2 with inv space mods is another story but D2R…big oof. There’s a reason it heavily undersold.
