D2 / D2R is still the Greatest Of All Time, ARPG in the genre. Nothing is remotely close

Nothing is remotely close

I disagree. POE was very close to D2 in its early days, and, in my personal opinion, surpassed D2 at one point, however, due to the nature of how POE content is added, it has become a convoluted mess over the years, again, in my opinion.

Compared to the state of D4 right now, D3 is a goat among goats.

I dont buy the ā€œgive them timeā€ non sense. They should have learned from their own games and those around them.

so maybe diablo isnt the game for you ^^? most people still like the d4 going back to d2 roots idea. not perfect yet, but it has potential.

I just saw it as an average game - I enjoyed Starcraft, Baldursgate, Warcraft 3, A lot more.

Just an average game really.

i kept an inventory slot for 1 item, thats it

it’s better than D4 where you have to constantly loot a full inventory of trash just to reroll stats once a month

as if that doesn’t break the flow of the game loop

love looting an inventory full of garbage where every item sells for 30k

in D2 i could tell what items were worth a lot if I needed $

D4, everythings 30k… and gems are 4 for some reason??? lmao

Honestly they need to change the itemization of Diablo 4… Only gear with % and conditions isn’t very good and that’s the biggest drawback in my opinion. Oh and i also hate myself for looking for even more vulnerable damage.

I’ve played all Diablo games extensively, way more than you lol. This isn’t unpopular opinion; the people who rate D2 are biased because they played it in an era when the games pool to choose from was way smaller. If D2(R) wanted to actually be good TODAY it should’ve adapted to modern IMPROVEMENTS and inventory extension / item size in inv revamp should’ve been priority #1

the sales for d2r are nice tho. d2r cant be awesome today, as the graphics are, even reworked, still a bit old. ^^ im glad they released it tho, love to go back every now and then without having to deal with screen size problems ^^

It was lightning in a bottle. When you create something that popular and genre defining you are never going to top it. There’s a few rare exceptions like Doom. The modern iteration is amazing and stays true to the original as far as game play goes. D2R is basically Blizzard’s version of that.

Yea, I can’t agree.

While D2 certainly had it’s story down. It lacked some atmosphere from the first Diablo.

D2 was the start of Boss rushing. This wasn’t a thing in D1 because itemization was set to Dungeon level thus anything you did in that dungeon was worth while.

D2 introduced Set Armors. Never been a fan. Too binary in build diversity.
D2 added the skill system while removing global magic and magic scrolls. Not a plus for me.

Perhaps the worst blunder that looked cool at first was the synergy system added late in it’s life. It opened a few new builds and proceeded to eliminate many others due to skill point limits.

None of the Diablo games are perfection. D1 did some things better and D2 did some better.

Yeah D2 is the best. D3 is garbage. Blizz needs to stop emulating that trash bin game.

So many half truths here. It’s obvious you never played D2:LOD at any sort of end game level. Did you even hit 80?

3x4, and if you fill up your entire inventory with charms, that’s a tradeoff that you are choosing to make. Most don’t.

As for item loss on death…it’s not exactly difficult to deal with. If you can’t reach your corpse, just rejoin and it shows up next to you. Problem solved.

Deaths shouldn’t be painless.

d2r is pretty pog for a couple weeks ngl but i get bored after ~200 chaos runs

idk how i managed to play that all day everyday back in the days

ultimately d2jsp killed it for me. no fresh start on season resets kills the mood.
i’m not about to compete with 20 years worth of stacking 3rdparty currency with no sink

i dont know about the best ARPG ever, but definitely the best in the Diablo series, which is crazy cause the hype behind D4 was insane everyone thought it would take the crown, but D2 is so solid in comparison and so far ahead of the rest that D4 didn’t even come close.

It was great for it’s time but Titan Quest is better and came out a couple years after it did. It just doesn’t hold up today with POE, Grim Dawn, Last Epoch. Grim Dawn even feels more like d2 than any of the newer ARPGs do and does everything better. People are just blind with nostalgia. Sure people are entitled to their opinions but settling on such dumb ones will for sure make people wonder if you were dropped on your held a lot as a kid.

The father of ARPGS is actually Dragon Slayer. Released in 1984. I know, because I played it when I was 6. The original Diablo, took many of it’s elements to craft their game.

Dragon Slayers was the first RPG to turn away from turn based combat and go with the hack and slash live combat method. Hence the A in ARPG.

So thank Falcom for that.

As for D2R being the grand daddy of them all. I disagree. It’s combat was slow and clunky (still is). The story, is basic (despite it’s twist towards the end).

Was it the basis for all future RPGS, absolutely. Bioware out did Blizzard with Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2. Both are way better than D2/D2R.

d2 is def the best up to and including patch 1.10.

poe is second

d2r is patch 1.11 which kinda fails, but oh well. they really revived the wrong game.

i agree with that and played everyone of them, had my pc removed during d2 because i was a teen that played it too much, i took vacation for diablo 3 and played it a lot on release month and a lot the next 5 month of so also. diablo 2 back in its day when we were using maphack and considering the earliest patch also and all this stuff id say back in its days diablo 2 was bigger then diablo 3, next to each other diablo 3 provide much more QoL and is actually not bad at all. i would say diablo 3 is better then diablo 2 not considering their times personnally but i never tought diablo 3 was very bad. diablo 2 was fun but is overrated.

There were many games to play in 2000 don’t give me that crap.
